Fiel at 50: Life is beautiful

Mother. Wife. Beauty Queen. Speaker. Cultural Worker.  Public Servant. Etcetera. Not necessarily in that order.

Does it take a superwoman to excel in those roles?

Not really. All it takes is (Miss Tagbilaran 1987) Fiel Angeli Araoarao-Gabin to pull such a feat.

Fiel Angeli A. Gabin: 'I use "Perla," especially for the face, and instead of eyebrow pencil, uses mascara to define the eyebrows.' Contributed Photo

Bullied by the richer, more "entitled" girls and some schoolmates, saying that their family is "uyamot," but through honest efforts, has proved that there's more to life than money and material wealth.

If she were to live her 50 years all over again, would Fiel do it the same way, with nothing changed?

"I will still be profoundly grateful to God for each day of my life - good times, bad times and all, cherish  moments with my loving family and true friends," she says with conviction. "And continue my advocacy of helping young people hone their potentials through my own simple ways."

On the occasion of her 50th birthday on Monday (February 24, 2020), Fiel has 50 (actually, more!!!) good reasons to celebrate life.

1.Eldest daughter of bank executive Rep Bongoyan Araoarao (who opted to run for Panglao Mayor declining a managerial position, after bring prodded by his father), and Wincie Espejo Araoarao, a dedicated Bohol National High School (BNHS) PE teacher and Bukang Liwayway Dance Troupe founder.

6.Thankful to her experiences at Holy Spirit School, Bohol National High School, and Divine Word College of Tagbilaran.

7.“Manang Fiel” to Reparato Anthony “Ondoy”, Ann Claire “Bibby”, and Coeli Marie “Chelli”.

8.Since she was young, was always smitten by those who speak English well.

10.Loves seeing swimming pools and the beach.

11.Likes avocado “lamaw” with banana, mango, condensed milk, and ice.

15.Watched the "Sound of Music" almost 20 times.

16.Started admiration for local showbiz personalities in the early 1980s and likes Pops Fernandez, Ruffa Gutierrez, Janella Salvador, and Sue Ramirez; while her favorite Hollywood actors are Christopher Reeve (original “Superman”), Keanu Reeves, and Johnny Depp.

17.As right-brained, hates Math and would rather be left and stay afloat in the middle of the sea or slowly swim ashore than solve a math equation.

18.Started joining beauty pageants at age 13, in the Miss Regional Secondary School Conference at Larena National Vocational College (now SSC) in Larena, Siquijor.

Fiel Angeli Araoarao-Gabin as Miss Tagbilaran 1987.

34.“Low maintenance” as she buys “cheap” clothes (Expensive clothes and shoes are gifts from siblings).

35.Is “obsessive-compulsive” (OC) when it comes to folding clothes – by kind and by color.

36.Wished that she had smooth long, legs.

As I’ve been saying, Atty. Julius Gregory Delgado aka the Running Lawyer is having the best of both worlds.
As Bared has been reporting in “scoop” last week, Atty. Delgado has been spotted in Japan.
Of course, Atty. Delgado is also enjoying his busy schedule as president of the association of young Boholanos in Manila.
“While in the land of Lapad, he was spotted at the Old City holding hands with a beautiful Japanese girl while giggling and whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears. This Japanese told him a phrase from a famous song ’Anataga Hoshii, Anataga Hoshii,” said the roving aka sosyalan VRS. “Atty. Greg knows that the song means “I like you and I love you.”
“Doy Leo, I swear, I heard Atty. Greg whispered to the Japanese girl the words ’Ashte Masu’,” added VRS. “You should know that they are Japanese words for ‘I love you’.”
However, the “short romance” between Atty. Greg and the beautiful Japanese girl turned out to be as ephemeral as Cherry Blossoms — you know, gone in the wink of an eye.
“He has to leave Japan Ha! Ha! Ha!” revealed VRS. “Who knows if they are communicating through Facebook?”
By the way, the Japan visit was part of the yearly “vacation” of the members of Villaraza Cruz Marcelo Angangco, officially known as CVC Law or simply "The Firm," the country's top litigation law firm. They had a break from their rigorous work for their annual RnR abroad. Two of the members of the Firm hail from Bohol, lawyers  Elmar Galacio of Valencia and Julius Gregory Delgado of Tubigon.

Atty. Delgado shared a glimpse of their trip to the Land of the Rising Sun - Japan. When people think of Japan, the country's capital Tokyo immediately comes to mind. Unbeknownst to many, it is not the ancient capital of Japan. It is Kyoto which used to be the seat of power and culture of Japan.
Atty. Julius Gregory Delgado has experienced Japan’s past perfect as it preserves time-honored traditions and country hospitality.
Japan is home to the world's largest urban metropolis, rugged wilderness, and a culture steeped in ancient tradition, Japan is a travelers dream.

For the first day of the trip, the CVC Group visited the Golden Pavilion and the Nijo Castle which used to be the seat of Japan's government. The day ended with a hearty dinner which includes the delicious (and expensive) Kobe Beef at a local restaurant. For the second day, the lawyers visited the Todaji Temple at Nara which house the biggest Buddha Bronze Statue and spent the afternoon at Osaka visiting the Castle of Shogun Tokugawa, Umeda Tower and Dotonbori. They also visited the Fushimi Inari Shrine where scenes of the Memoirs of a Geisha were shot. The day ended with a Keiseke, a full course Japanese dinner. The third and last day was a free day and Atty. Delgado spent his day at the Mecca of Motorsports, the Suzuka Circuit near Nagoya.

After the official trip of the firm, Atty. Delgado dropped by Hong Kong, his second visit to the city. In 2007, Atty. Delgado was part of the Philippine Team which competed in an International Law Moot Court Competition. While it rained for two days, it did not prevent Atty. Delgado and his two fellows to enjoy their brief visit at the former British colony.
Atty. Julius Gregory Delgado has become a samurai warrior in Japan. Samurai leaders wore fierce masks and horned helmets. All lived by a code that valued death over defeat.
Atty. Greg attended University of the Philippines-Diliman earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree Major in Public Administration in 2000. Aside from being a constant college scholar/dean's lister, he is best remembered as one of the fiercest activists of his time and was elected in the 34th UP University Student Council and headed the Community Rights and Welfare Committee. He also spearheaded the Senate Lobbying Team that demanded higher state subsidy and resisted commercialization of the UP.
He entered the Ateneo de Manila University College of Law earning his Juris Doctor Degree and was awarded Silver Medal for Second Honors being one of the top students of his batch. Before graduation, he was already invited by the top law firms in the country and signed-up for Villaraza Cruz Marcelo Angangco (formerly Carpio Villaraza Cruz), also known in the legal circle as "The Firm". Atty. Greg has been active in civic organization in the past and at present.
Presently, he is the president of the Tubigonians Association in Metro Manila, the youngest to hold the post. He is also the president of the Association of Young Boholanos in Metro Manila.
Back from his trip abroad, Atty. Delgado will visit Bohol to attend the meeting of Bohol Football Association. He will bring a trophy for a local tournament organized in honor of former Bohol Football Director  Allan Dinsay of University of Bohol who just passed away. The Bohol Football Team has a plan to rename the trophy, the Allan Dinsay Cup. He will also attend the meeting of the Bohol Highlands Gun Club in Tubigon Firing Range, a range in a hill overlooking Cebu-Bohol sea….and, ehem, share his pasalubong! He! He! He!
Atty. Delgado’s cup runneth over.

Songs about rain

Fer Mary Baliquig joins Miss World Phl 2012
Baliquig Credit: Stephanie Tumampos
Fer Mary Baliquig is one of the 25 official candidates who will have the chance to walk away with the 2012 Miss World Philippines crown tonight, June 24, at the grand coronation night at the Manila Hotel.

The Boholana beauty who thankfully swore never to say die is one of the early favorites of Miss World-Philippine bets.

“She is very unassuming and a very nice girl devoid of any pretensions, hopefully she can make it,” said one MWP insider.

Fer has good pageant experience aside from her Bb. Pilipinas attempt: she was 1st runner-up in the Miss Bohol Sandugo 2010 and winner of Miss Tagbilaran 2010.

The Miss World Philippines 2012 pageant will be hosted by 1993 Miss World Second Princess Ruffa Gutierrez and Edu Manzano, aired live by TV5 starting at 8:30 p.m.

For the farmers, the rainy season is the start of the planting season. Those who have un-irrigated lands will soon be showered with rainwater, giving them the signal to prepare their farmlands for their planting activities. I saw this in Lila, Duero and other towns when I had my countryside tour yesterday. The scene of rice planting was a sight to behold which overflows with sweetness, hope and optimism like that of the paintings of Fernando Amorsolo.

Did you know that there are more than hundreds of thousands of songs about rain and storms? And hearing songs about rain while it’s coming down make you feel less alone. Early morning rain is refreshing and cleansing, and at night time, the steady rhythm of the rain sound is calming and sleep inducing, right?

Besides the nursery rhyme Rain Rain Go Away, my first favorite song about rain was Rain popularized by Donna Cruz when I was in elementary. It was my favorite because of its simple “sing-able” melody and haunting lyrics... Rain gently falls whenever we say goodnight, falling like when you’re out of sight, rain follows me even in my bed, and rain is the tears that I shed… there will be no sunshine in my life until you say your mine oh mine…..all the kids in the old neighborhood knew the song and I hummed it all the time while taking a bath, doing my homework, rushing to school and especially when I was feeling blue.

I stumbled upon other old and familiar songs about rain and storms when I was youtubing like It Will Rain (Bruno Mars) because it’s Ulan (Rivermaya) and you get Basang-basa sa Ulan (Aegis). So better bring an  Umbrella (Rihanna). It’s About To Rain (Neil Young) because it’s Rainy Days and Mondays (The Carpenters). And On A Rainy Night (Shawn Mullins), Baby The Rain Must Fall (Glenn Yarbrough). Other people hate the rain because it’s Bad Rain (Allman Brothers Band) and Blame It On the Rain (Milli Vanilli) others Can’t Stand The Rain (Missy Elliott). During school days, people are praying Don’t Rain On My Parade (Barbra Streisand), while others go the monastery to offer eggs to Rain Rain Go Away (Bobby Vinton). Yesterday I Heard The Rain (Dionne Warwick/Tony Bennett) during Early Morning Rain (Gordon Lightfoot), Here Comes The Rain Again (Eurythmics). At night, I Love The Rain (Lenny Kravitz) and Singin’ In The Rain (Gene Kelly). There is nothing more calming and sleep inducing than the steady Rhythm of the Rain (The Cascades) on virtually within earshot…and I love Listen To The Rain ( Evanescence) and think to go Naked In The Rain (Red Hot Chili Peppers). My friends are happy because It’s Raining Men ( The Spice Girls/The Weather Girls)! Kiss Me In The Rain ( Barbara Streisand) because After The Rain (Nelson), After The Rain Has Fallen (Sting), I Made It Through The Rain (Barry Manilow).

Okay, all together now (for these timeless and classic songs about rain):

Rhythm of the Rain by The Cascades
Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain
Telling me just what a fool I've been
I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain
And let me be alone again

The only girl I care about has gone away
Looking for a brand new start
But little does she know
That when she left that day
Along with her she took my heart

Rain please tell me now does that seem fair
For her to steal my heart away when she don't care
I can't love another when my hearts somewhere far away

Rain won't you tell her that I love her so
Please ask the sun to set her heart aglow
Rain in her heart and let the love we knew start to grow

Oh, listen to the falling rain
Pitter pater, pitter pater
Oh, oh, oh, listen to the falling rain
Pitter pater, pitter pater

Crying In The Rain by The Everly Brothers
I'll never let you see
The way this broken heart is hurting me
I've got my pride
And I know how to hide
All the sorrow and pain
I'll do my crying in the rain

If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
You'll never know
That I still love you so
Though the heartaches remain
I'll do my crying in the rain

Raindrops falling from Heaven
Could never wash away my misery
Since we're not together
I pray for stormy weather
Raindrops falling from Heaven
Could never wash away my misery
Since we're not together
I pray for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you never see

Some day when my crying's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I may be a fool
But 'til then darling you'll
Never see me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain
To hide these tears I hope you never see

Raindrops Keep falling on my head by B.J. Thomas
Raindrops keep falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin' seems to fit
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he' got things done
Sleepin' on the job
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

But there's one thing I know
The blues he sends to meet me won't defeat me
It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Crying's not for me
Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me
