Laiilette: All Around Star

Actress and performer Leah Scarnet “Laiilette” Jo Geulen - Boiser on love:  'I want to emphasize to people that true love knows no boundaries, regardless of economic status, religion, shape, size, and age.'

A complete package.

That aptly describes Leah Scarnet “Laiilette” Jo Geulen - Boiser, also known by her screen name “Scarlet”, one of the luminaries in showbiz.

The eldest daughter of the late lawyer Pablito Tan Geulen, Jr., a military lawyer who worked at the Judge Advocate General’s Office (JAGO) and Lucila Jo Geulen, a certified “fashionista”, who is a loving sister to Lovette Geulen-Laolao, Laiilette is into hosting, singing and acting.

“I would love to play a kontrabida,” Laiilette said in jest in an interview by VRS years ago.
Give her more challenging roles in teleseryes and movies, Laiilette's natural acting would flow.

When she enters a room or a hall, everybody is sure to notice, not only because of her build, but because of her bubbly personality.

Most people view her as an extrovert, which is presumably why she easily earned her place in Philippine show business industry.

She may not remember some of the times she spent with other people. Interestingly, Ofelia “Pia” Perez of the Pitch Internet Café along A. Lesage Street, with her daughter Nicole, still fondly remembers that between 2007 and 2008, Laiilette would frequent the internet café with Holy Name University (HNU) professor, Rosalina Rara-Sarabosing.

During those times, Laiilette would bring food for her “baon” while browsing the net and seeing then little girl Nicole whom she sweetly called “Cute Gamay”, would share her food with the child.

Certainly, many would have recollections of Laiilette, especially her classmates and friends at Holy Spirit School, Bohol Wisdom School, Cebu Doctors’ College, and Divine Word College of Tagbilaran, now Holy Name University.

As she is turning over to the golden chapter of her life, let us get to know more of her, as she candidly answers these questions:

* How would you describe yourself?
- I am a very friendly and spontaneous person. I speak my mind, but at least, I’m transparent. What you see is what you get. I value honesty and loyalty to loved ones, even in distance. I love God, I Iove life, and I believe in positive thinking, that with God’s grace, we can achieve real happiness.

* During your childhood, which fairy tale princess did you idolize?
- I always loved the story of Cinderella. I love life and love when true love prevails.

* Do you remember you joined a fashion show in Baclayon when you were a little girl and you were wearing a 2-piece swimwear? “Nasuya kuno si Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao – Gabin” nimo adto. Ha! Ha! Ha!
- Yes. As a child, I was already geared for the limelight. I joined in amateur singing contests at DYRD-AM and won in them, of course. Until now, I still remember Peter Dejaresco telling me “Day, ayaw na apil sa contest kay para ni sa mga pobre”,  so I cried and told him, “Pobre man pod mi, mao na apil ko contest.” The first prize was P15.00. “OK ra makatan-aw ko’g sine sa Bohol Quality and Sir Peter never forgot me. Years later, I was given the break to sing my first jingle “Angel's Wings” promoting the travel agency of Peter's wife, Zarah Jao-Dejaresco, which is still being played over the radio for more than 30 years. Also, I was already a fashion and ramp model before my elementary years in some fashion shows in my mother’s place in Baclayon and in Soledad. “Artistahon na ko daan.”

Finding true love in Jade, they're on their 18th year of togetherness.

* What is your favorite food?
- My favorite food is rice, which explains why I’m so big and beautiful! Ha! Ha! Ha!

* Who is your favorite singer?
- I like Afro singers, especially Angela Bofill who sings love songs and jazz well.

* Do you have pets?
- Yes. My husband, Jade, and I are both dog lovers. We have our own breed of fox terriers and pomeranians. We name them after dances - “Samba”, “Rhumba”, “Chacha”, “Swing”, “Reggae”, “Jive”, “Jazz”, “Lambada”, “Mambo”, “Tango”, Boogie”, and the latest ones are “Twerky” and “Zumba”. They are stress relievers and are like our babies.

* The important lesson that your parents taught you?
- My parents taught me to be grateful for what I have, although we can also dream as much to become a better person, but the key to happiness for me is to know how to count my blessings - what I have, not what I lack. And most of all, to love and trust God all the time and talk to Him as often as I can.

* How do you as a friend value friendship?
- I value friendship so much that I don’t look at my friend the way others do. One may not like a person I like, but that doesn’t affect my judgment because I cherish a friend based on what she or he is to me. I’ll just be a mirror - if loyal to me and loves me, I’ll reciprocate such feelings willingly. It’s so nice to value friends who value you, too. I have no criteria in choosing friends. Being rich or poor is not an issue. It’s loyalty and being a true friend that matters.

* What made you pursue the acting career when you are a law graduate?
- The ambition to become an actress was my childhood dream. To be enlisted in showbiz is a one-in-a-million opportunity, so being a Juris Doctor is always a fall back. The showbiz thing is a dream-come-true, so I grabbed it. Instead of having the bar review in Manila, I was launched on television via”Okidokidok” and my singing in the Sunday variety show “ASAP” and in the daily noontime show “MTB”.

* How did you get started in show business?
- It was during the MetroCentre Hotel show of comedian/impersonator/ entertainer Willy Nepomuceno where he asked the audience if someone can do a duet with him and people shouted my name to him and so I sang. After that, a talent scout from ABS-CBN approached me and invited me for a panel audition which led to my launching as one of the ABS-CBN Star Magic – Batch 9 talents.

* Were you already in showbiz in 2007 and 2008?
- In 2000 was my stint in “Okidokidok” then “Calla Lily” on ABS-CBN in 2000 and crossed over to GMA-7 in 2006 till the present, though inactive ako ngayon. In 2016, when Dad died, I had to stay here in Bohol with Mom, till now. “Nag-negosyo na lang kami ng asawa ko ng online dessert foodie business”.

* Enumerate the shows and movies you were part of.
- Starting with “Okidokidok” and the rest is history. I technically had my “baptism of fire” as cast in the Aga Mulach-starrer situational comedy (sitcom), then had singing stints in the Sunday variety show “ASAP”, as well as guestings in different ABS-CBN shows “Calla Lily”, “Martin Late at Night”, “Homeboy”, “Star Studio Presents”, “Kris Aquino Show”, “The Buzz”, “Showtime”, “MTB”, and many more. When I got married, I stopped for a while and resumed showbiz work via “Idol Ko si Kap” topbilled by Senator Bong Revilla at GMA-7, then followed by the “kantaserye” starring “Asia’s Songbird” Regine Velasquez.  The next assignment was a “kontrabida” role in Jennylyn Mercado’s “Little Star”, then another “kontrabida” role with Gelli de Belen versus Eugene Domingo in the “Jejemon” sitcom. I also had the chance to work with Heart Evangelista in the fantaserye  “Dwarfina”. Another “kontrabida” role was lined up in “Aso ni San Roque” that had the formidable Eddie Garcia in the cast, followed by “Biritera” with Glaiza de Castro and Dennis Trillo. I was also in “Healing Hearts” featuring teenage stars Joyce Ching and Kristofer Martin. Then, there are hosting and singing jobs in Luzon and Manila clubs that included the shows with the “Masculados”. It was interesting to be cast in mainstream movies and indie films alike like “Biktima” with Cesar Montano and Angel Aquino, “Pendong” with Will Devaughn”, “Nandito Ako Nagmamahal Sa ‘Yo” with the Aljur Abrenica-Kris Bernal tandem, and in the critically-acclaimed “Magnifico”, as teacher to Jiro Manio.

Laiilette frolicking her furbabies.

* How did you meet your husband?
- It was not whirlwind romance; we became friends muna. I was renting a studio-type hub just adjacent to the apartment of his aunt and uncle. I became friends with Auntie Nena after she asked me about my place of origin. When I said I came from Bohol, she told me that she is also from Bohol, belonging to the Mendez and Boiser clans of Ubay. We got to talk more often at the apartment grounds and during one bingo time, she introduced me to her nephew, Jade, who was then working at the Sony – Novaliches logistics department. What followed was we became bingo friends, then barkada, then one thing led to another. “’Love thy neighbour’ talaga”.

* What is the greatest contribution that you have given to the arts and culture sector of Bohol?
- My greatest contribution to Bohol’s arts and culture promotion efforts was when I was the original interpreter of the very famous (controversial) song “Bohol” in 1988. A lot of talents interpreted it without acknowledging the original interpreter. In recent years, I am also able to inspire and develop young Boholano talents as judge in different talent competitions.

* Many people don’t know that you’re a Juris Doctor. Any advice to the law students of this generation?
- I advise them that when they become lawyers or Juris Doctors, they should give sound advice to people based on the law and what is proper to please the law and God, not to make advice  based on  greed or love for money, because in the end, the real judge of one’s undertakings in life is God.

* What does being 50 mean to you?
- Being 50 means living a new life, taking a chance to forgive myself for my sins, and improving myself to become a much better person. So, for me, life begins at 50, that’s why I say that “at 50, let the good life begin”.

* Are you still open for showbiz projects now that you are 50?
- Of course! Once an actress, always an actress, and that’s the only job that doesn’t expire!  Acting has no age limit, because all ages are welcome to act. Remember that we depict peoples’ lives, so all ages are welcome. “Marami pa ako’ng roles na dapat gampanan”, as character actress or comedienne at the age of 50. Let the good life begin, di ba? Hopefully, after the pandemic, as long as I can find a good caregiver-companion for Mom, I plan to act again.

* If you have a single opportunity to engage in a conversation with President Rodrigo Duterte, what will you tell him?
- Well, I will tell him to tap the brilliant abilities and talents of the Boholano people. They are bright, capable, God-fearing, and kind, who will likely become good leaders in his cabinet, so we may have a chance to have a better Philippines ASAP.

* As an advocate of self-love, how do you deal with people who do body shaming?
- I don’t get affected by body shaming because I have always been proud of myself in whatever size I am in at a time or two. I love and respect myself and acknowledge my weaknesses, but thankful of my strengths that make me proud of myself in whatever shape and size. I believe that it’s beauty that matters.  Even if I am big, I know I’m beautiful in my own right that I can handle and maintain such. We can always change our (body) size, but never beauty.

* Any fashion tip for plus-size women that will compliment their curves and make them feel confident?
- Well, they just have to exercise and internalize self-love, feel what they want for their body, dress in accordance with their preferred comfort and be confident in it. Even if you’re big, as long as you’re happy with your body, love yourself and confidently feel good about yourself and you will definitely   showcase beauty and glow in our own right.

* What is it about Laiilette that people have not seen?
- Well, my life is an open book, but if they really know “Laiilette”, I want positive vibes. I want my loved ones and myself to continue to value a harmonious relationship, as I am a very loving and responsible person to my loved ones.

* What makes 'funny' Laiilette flare up?
- Well, I flare up if someone hurt my loved ones’ feelings. I love my family so much and that includes my fur babies, as well.

* How do you cope with the pandemic financial saga?
- Jade and I are into this online food selling. Our online resto is “Foodie Lovers by Tito Jade and Tita Scarlet”. We post desserts and food packages and cater to customers online or to some personal “suki”.  Times are hard, parties are not allowed, so we get limited orders, that’s why every now and then, we get to reselling some pastries, fruits, and frozen food, such as bacon, sausages, and important items like face shields and others. My husband and I enjoy what we are doing, as we are the masters of our time and we are our own bosses.

* Who is your greatest source of strength?
- My greatest source of strength? God and my family.

* Your most significant achievements in life?
- When, in spite of my being an extrovert, I graduated from law school and I am now a Juris Doctor (Doctor of Laws). Another achievement was when I got the opportunity to enter showbiz because of my God-given talents without fuss, without having to join in competitions to become an actress. I became an instant celebrity cast in different roles in TV shows and movies, hobnobbing with showbiz greats. I did not start as an “extra”, but I was cast immediately using the screen name “Scarlet” for the “Okidokidok” role which paved the way to my guestings in “ASAP”, “MTB”, and 555 sardines TV commercial. Not everyone is given a chance to be a celebrity like me. Lastly, I am able to successfully manage a very simple food business through online selling partnering with my very supportive husband, Jade. Despite the CoVidD-19 pandemic, we just do our best to make a living, with God’s help.

* What do you consider as the greatest proof of the presence of a spiritual supreme being or God in your life?
- That in spite of life’s trials and tribulations, I am still here, enjoying life to the fullest. I am confident that notwithstanding the fact that life is not perfect, I have a bigger God who makes the imperfections perfect, that’s why I am happy pa rin.

* What song would best describe your life?
- “God is So Good”!  In spite of the challenges of life, I always defeat them because God, who is good, loves me and I trust and love Him, so He always takes care of me. I am happy because God loves me.

* If your life would be made into a movie, which leading lady would play your role and what  part would you highlight?
- Well, I can’t deny my being a Sharonian. I would love Sharon Cuneta to portray my life, that notwithstanding people’s judgments that I won’t graduate law school because I was “one of the boys” and was a “party animal”, I have proven them wrong because I set my priorities and was responsible for my actions. I want Sharon to depict my life as a success in maintaining a happy life, despite of some trials because I have a loving God who makes me feel safe and happy all the time. Now, I am a Doctor of Laws (Juris Doctor) no less. I want to emphasize to people that true love knows no boundaries, regardless of economic status, religion, shape, size, and age - that doesn’t matter because true love will find its way, just as I found my true love in Jade. We have been happily married “buyag-buyag for 18 years na” and counting.

* Is there anything in life that you still want to accomplish?
- I want just peace of mind, happiness for myself and life – that’s all. I want nothing more. I do not have a child, but God replenished it with battalions of loving nieces and nephews in Bohol from both the Jos and Geulens, and the Boiser clan as well. We may not be rich, but God really provides, so I am contented. I just want to be happier and maybe go back to my intermittent diet successfully to be healthier. Oh, yes! After the pandemic, might as well want to travel more in God’s perfect time. Otherwise, I am already blessed. Thanks be to God.

* The lasting legacy that you will leave to your loved ones?
- When confusion strikes, just pray and let God guide you to do what is right. If it is good, it’s good – you can never go wrong. Just do what is right and everything will follow rightfully. It pays to live peacefully and happily with God, family, and others.

Scene: Provincial police director Senior Supt Angeles Geñorga, Jr., who served the province for 11 months and five days, was replaced by Senior Supt. Julius Cesar Gornez on Friday.  Senior Supt. Angelito Dumangeng, deputy regional director for operation, presided over Gornez’ installation, on behalf of Police Regional Office-7 Director Chief Superintendent Debold Sinas. Geñorga’s sudden relief came as a major surprise. “I assumed my post on Jan. 16, 2018 short of one week for duty, but I am not short of what ought to be delivered in the span of time. I am confident that I have accomplished our mission. I would not speak in detail of what we have delivered but the statistics shown would speak of how we performed as a team,” said Geñorga. Gornez, who was also a former Tagbilaran City police chief, vowed to continue the war against illegal drugs, fight against criminality and corruption. “I will commit to supporting relevant ideas in improving our service,” said Gornez. He also enjoined the provincial police force here to make Bohol a safer place to live with as a drug-free province. Bohol Gov. Edgar Chatto didn’t attend the turnover of command. He was represented by provincial administrator Ae Damalerio. Out of 48 mayors in Bohol, only Tagbilaran City Mayor Baba Yap attended the event. Sources said Geñorga was one of the provincial police directors and station commanders reshuffled by Camp Crame to avoid connivance between law enforcers and politicians in preparation for the May 13 midterm elections.

He is driven to become a successful housemate so that he can fulfil his dream and be able to help give better life to his family.

Scene: Mr. Football Philippines Elmer “Lacknet” Bedia personally mentored the 100 participants in the free football clinic conducted last week in Panglao town. The event was hosted by Panglao Dolphins Football Club.  Bedia also wished that through the clinic, Bohol Football Association (BOHFA), through its president Edmar Thaddeus Simpao, hoped to produce great players. With this beautiful game in football, we can help them refresh their attitude and teach them how to behave and focus on their beautiful life. Hopefully, we can find some of these kids one day that represent Bohol to play for the country,” said Bedia.

Monique Bag-o lives north of this town, but she made a vow to travel to Barangay Malinao in Garcia Hernandez town to climb Bohol Calvary during the annual feast of the Black Nazarene.

A healing session was conducted by visionary
Marina Reblinca during the feast of the
Black Nazarene in Garcia Hernandez town,
Bohol province on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

That pledge, made to the Black Nazarene, was in honor that she begot a son whom she brought along with her on Wednesday’s fiesta.

She attributes many of her life’s miracles to the iconic Nazarene image, which she said were all granted because of her deep faith and devotion.

Bag-o, 50, said she asked for a son since she had already three daughters now aged 27, 25 and 22. At 43, she gave birth to Kurt Daniel in 2011.

Another devotee Leonola Baguhin, 68, hiked with her son, Leonard, who had a stroke last year. He wanted to be healed for his ailment.

Bag-o and Baguhin joined hundreds of pilgrims in the yearly feast. Many people started the trek about 7 a.m. at Barangay Malinao — which is about 3 kilometers from the village proper.

A Holy Mass was held at 10 a.m. inside a small chapel officiated by Rev. Fr. Mario Renca, assistant parish priest of the Saint John the Baptist Parish Church. Others had to stay outside the chapel to hear the Mass.

At least 1,000 people attended the fiesta, said Barangay Malinao chieftain Honorio Jaminal.

“There are more people coming here if we compared to last year’s 600,” he said.

For many of the pilgrims, the climb up the mountain is about carrying the faith on the Lord Jesus. Wednesday’s celebration was a huge gathering of people whose faith in the Black Nazarene is similar.

It was on May 29, 2011 when Marina Reblinca, a visionary and healer, brought the image of the Black Nazarene from Palawan to Bohol Calvary (originally named Mount Kalagan) in Barangay Malinao, Garcia Hernandez town.
She established a small chapel funded by devotees.

Reblinca, 65, said while she was in Palawan, the Nazarene told her he wanted to be in Bohol Calvary.

“I just followed the Senior’s order,” said Reblinca.

“Then, people from all over Bohol came here,” she added.

She said people were healed because of their strong faith in the Black Nazarene. They believed that touching or rubbing the statue with a towel would heal them physically and spiritually.

“Yung iba hahawak lang sa pisi o sa lubid, gumagaling na sila kung talagang ang paniniwala ay galing sa puso. Pero hahawak ka lang wala sa puso hindi ka talaga gagaling kahit anong gagawin mo,” she said.

She also said that the Black Nazarene protected the place during the strong earthquake in 2013 and some strong typhoons.

Since then, devotees consider the mountain, with its serene silence, holy.

During the feast, devotees were treated to a free lunch.

Jaminal said six pigs were butchered for the fiesta, while two lechons were donated by some devotees.

“Everybody in the community has been helping a lot,” Jaminal said. “Many gave donations for the foods and drinks and flowers.”

After the lunch, devotees waited for the “patunob,” wherein the image of the Black Nazarene was placed on the parts of the body for healing.

When Reblinca placed the little statue of the Black Nazarene at the devotees’ heads, shoulders and hands, the devotees prayed and kissed the image asking for healing and miracles.

Others would wait for the flowers she blessed for healing and success in business.

Rosalinda Huertas and her sister Calpia said their family has ties to the holy mountain, and they’ve both hiked up the mountain for the Black Nazarene.

“It’s very spiritual,” Huertas said. “I’m Catholic and I believe in the Black Nazarene, so it’s very meaningful to have the strength to make it up the mountain.”

Mae Janice Galon, 34, left her job as an internet cafe attendant at B&J Computers in Jagna town to attend the fiesta. She considered her journey to the mountain packed with spiritual significance.

“For me, the significance of the Holy Mountain in my life is very helpful. Once I stepped there I felt the peace, the light of life even though I have so much struggles knowing the fact about a life of a single mother,” she said.

“The every single step I did is worth sacrificing that is to lessen my sins and the obligation I have in my shoulder. Every time I am there I forgot every worry I have and focus the possibilities in life for me and for the future of my kids. I am empty if I cannot go there. I am not complete if I cannot go there,” Galon added.

Candidates who add colors to COC filing

Wake-upper:
Scene: Congratulations to AJ Wincielou Johanna “Cielo” Araoarao Gabin of Barangay Cogon, Tagbilaran City, Bohol who is 5th placer nationwide in the August 12, 2018 Civil Service Commission Career Service Exam Pencil and Paper Test with a rating of 91.66. It may be recalled that in the March 18, 2018 CSC CSE Sub-Prof Exam, she landed in the Top 6 with a rating of 88.02. She is the daughter of Engr. Jerome John and Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao - Gabin.

Three colorful characters filed their intentions to run for the May 2019 midterm polls.  But I was able to catch only two perennial filers-- Santos Amaga Abella and Amay Bisaya- who filed their certificates of candidacy at the Commission on Elections provincial office in Tagbilaran.

provincial election officer IV)  on running for the May 2019

These two aspirants added color to the festive atmosphere at the provincial Comelec Office.

Santos Amaga Abella has set aside his senatorial ambition for a seat in the Provincial Board because he didn’t have the enough money to go to Manila.

But he vowed that he would still be as hardworking if elected into office.

Clad in a Barong Tagalog and black pants, Abella, 56, a farmer from Dagohoy town, filed his certificate of candidacy on Tuesday afternoon  at the provincial Comelec office.

He said he wanted to run for senator but he didn’t have enough financial resources to go to Manila and file his COC.

“I should run for senator but since I don’t have money to fly to Manila I ran for board member instead,” said Abella.

But he said his dream to be a senator could wait.

Abella said he ran for the same position in 2016 polls but received only 10,000 votes.

This time, he added, he planned to change his strategy that involved seeking the help of village chiefs.

If someone would help his candidacy, he loved to include Facebook in his campaign to increase his chance of winning.

Santos Abella on winning the election: ‘Ang aking kabaitan
at ganda kong lalaki’  Photo by Leo Udtohan
“Sama na yan sinong magbibigay ng tustus na tulong sa akin isama na ang Facebook sa service
para naman makikita ko sila, sayang naman gandang lalaki pa natin,” he said.

But, he admitted, he had no social media account.

Asked what would be his edge over the other candidates, he replied: “Ang aking kabaitan at ganda kong lalaki (My being a good person and a good-looking man).”

He admitted he would not like to ride a habal-habal (motorcycle for rent) to campaign in the remote areas because he didn’t want the voters to look down at him. He also said he would use “kumpit” (a fast sailboat) to campaign in island barangays.

According to Abella is also a singer.

To showcase his singing prowess, he started singing an unpopular Visayan ballad which amused everyone inside the Comelec office.

“ Gisimba, gialagaran sa kanunay ang imong kabuotan niining dughan.... kay ikaw...”

And another song, “Fresh release me let me go....”

When comedian Roberto Gloria Reyes, popularly known as “Amay Bisaya,” entered the office to file his candidacy, he tickled our fancies and our funny bones.

He wants to be the third wheel in the battle between two political giants.

Reyes, 60, and a native of Tubigon town, filed his certificate of candidacy for governor at the Commission on Election provincial office on Wednesday.

His two opponents are no-joke: Rep. Arthur Yap of Bohol’s 3rd district and resigned Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco Jr. who are both allies of President Duterte.

Reyes said he can run the province.

“I am running because it is time that Bohol will have a new governor. I am well-known,” he said.

He admitted that he ran twice for governor, for senator and vice president but had not won at least once.

“I am more qualified (to be the next governor). You cannot be an actor if you’re crazy,” he said.

Reyes was confident that he would be able to beat Evasco and Yap.

“I was not even scared when I ran as vice president of [former first lady) Imelda Marcos against GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo). Long live Bohol. We should continue providing economic development and peace especially to the poor like me,” he said.

To beef up his campaign sorties, Reyes said he would invite some of his showbiz friends and politicians who were his close friends.

In 2013, Reyes ran for Bohol governor in 2013 but lost to incumbent Gov. Edgar Chatto.

Reyes was known for his sidekick roles in movies like “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story,” “Ang Panday 2” and “Sigaw ng Katarungan.”

While waiting for the acceptance of his documents, Reyes showed his karate techniques.   Front kick. Side kick.

And we were carried away....

Bohol movement launched to urge Bong Go to run for Senate seat

Wake-uppers:
Scene:  Families were worried for the missing of the three village chiefs in Pilar town last week.  Police had deployed a large number of officers to investigate the disappearance. It turned out that these men attended a “party” in Tagbilaran City. Pilar Police Station chief Inspector Andie Corpuz said “they were not kidnapped.  They had drinking session with friends that they were not able to inform their families.” However, some people believed it was a “kidnapped me” scenario.

Panglao Mayor Pedro Fuertes vows
to make Panglao a liveable place,
a better, cleaner and safer destination in the country.
Leo Udtohan
Scene: Panglao Mayor Pedro Fuertes on the news that erstwhile and dismissed Panglao Mayor Leonila Paredes-Montero will be reinstated as mayor was “fake news.”  However, the camp of Montero told reporters to watch for (big) surprises this week.  Fuertes instead focused on many things for the development of Panglao, the tourism jewel of the province. “Let us work together to make Panglao a liveable place, a better, cleaner and safer destination that we can all be proud of.”

Scene:   Asked what her birthday message was, Dauis Mayor Marietta (“Miriam” to all) Sumaylo said, “Prosperity. Peace! Love! Harmony! Good health to everybody.”  She celebrated her birthday last July 4.  When asked about her plan for the 2019 election, “I will continue to serve the people of Dauis.” She simply flashed a smile so sweet that it seemed to say everything.

Supporters of Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go gathered at Holy Name University (HNU) on Saturday, July 7, to launch “Bayan for Bong Go” Bohol Movement which aims to encourage the loyal presidential assistant to run for a Senate seat in 2019.

It was attended by mayors, barangay and SK officials and volunteers from the different parts of the province.

Supporters of Special Assistant to the President Bong Go have launched the “Bayan for Bong Go” movement in Bohol aimed at convincing him to run for senator in the 2019 elections.   Leo Udtohan

A ‘brief’ visit by Villar

Public Works and Highways secretary Mark Villar arrived in Bohol last Thursday, July 5, seven days after President Rodrigo Duterte assured Boholanos that he would instruct Villar to check the on-going projects.

Villar visited Barangay Anislag in Maribojoc town where he was updated on the repair of certain roads and bridges which were damaged by the strong 2013 earthquake.

He stayed briefly at the site for about 30 minutes with provincial and local officials.

Villar was informed by Bohol reporters about the concerns of many residents in several towns in Bohol who clamored for an explanation from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)regarding some repair works done in roads that seem to be still in good condition.

DPWH regional director Ador Canlas answered that there were 12-on going road construction projects in the province which was affected by the 2013 strong earthquake.  He said the funds were just released this year for  reblocking, restoration and rehabilitation.

Villar said he would personally look into “questionable” projects in the province.

“Lahat po ng pangangailan po ng infrastructure ay mabibigyan ng pansin,”  assured Villar.

During the 25th national convention of the Vice-Mayors’ League of the Philippines (VMLP) in Panglao, Duterte was asked  during the presscon about the on-going road re-blocking project of the DPWH in Bohol that generated public outcry.

Duterte, who admitted that he is not a technical person to explain about the road project, said that he would ask Villar to come to Bohol.

“I will ask DPWH Secretary Villar to come over and explain to the people para ma... Anyway, it's the people's money. So they should... They deserve rather an explanation from the government.”

Provincial board member Thomas Abapo earlier said that on-going re-blocking projects on roads in the province that many even considered as not damaged at all, was a waste of funds.

Abapo expressed his disgust over the projects that apparently caused too much delay, inconvenience and accident to the riding public and motorists.

Tagbilaran Port features modern seaport facilities

Last Friday, Allen Doydora (of dyRD) and Dave Responte (of dyTR) tagged me along to visit the office of Port Manager James Galantao.

 Tagbilaran Port Manager  James Galantao
says the Tagbilaran Port, which is one of
the busiest ports in the country, features modern
 facilities.

We’re there to inquire about MV Lite Ferry 12 which slipped from its dock and slammed into a concrete diviver at the Tagbilaran port last Thursday.

Tagbilaran Port, one of the busiest ports in the country, features modern facilities. The predeparture area is fully air-conditioned and fully covered, unlike before. It has met the world-class standards.

Crimes and accidents at Tagbilaran port can now be monitored and documented with the installation of 32 high definition closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras placed in strategic areas.

These cameras have a zooming capability of approximately 350 degree.

Galantao said that with the installation of the CCTV cameras, entry and exit of criminals can be monitored.

If a wanted person is spotted on the CCTV camera entering the port gate to take a vessel, he can be arrested at the passenger terminal.

Vehicular accidents, especially hit-and-run cases, can also be traced using the CCTV cameras.

The construction of the covered walk is almost done which will connect from the entrance to the new building terminal.

Initially, there will be a space, a “Behold Bohol” stop over where tourists can have a glimpse of Bohol.

“The port is just the beginning for more Bohol adventures,” said Galantao.

The renovation and rehabilitation works is Tagbilaran Port’s answer to the public's clamor for better port facilities and public service, and in recognition of the importance of the tourism industry.

‘Sufficient teachers, but no enough classrooms’ in Bohol school

Students at Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School (DCPNHS) were greeted with noise from an on-going construction of adjacent two classroom buildings during the first day of classes last Monday, June 4.

The backhoe drilling could be heard from the school’s gymnasium while some 1,200 Grade 7 students were waiting for their classroom assignments.

At least 1, 200 incoming Grade 7 students at Dr. Cecilio Putong
National High School in Tagbilaran City, which has the biggest
population in Bohol province, were waiting for their room
assignments last Monday, June 4.  Assistant school principal
Melchor Daniel, Jr. said they have sufficient teachers

Overcrowded classrooms and a lack of school desks were the common problems reported on the first day of classes, according to assistant school principal Melchor Daniel, Jr.

“We have sufficient teachers, but no enough classrooms,” said Daniel.

He said the 4-story two classroom buildings will soon have 40 classrooms to answer their needs.

“The new buildings are still being constructed and I don’t think they can be completed anytime soon. Hopefully, this can answer our classroom needs,” Daniel said.

DCPNHS has the biggest student population in Bohol province. As of Monday, they have 6,000 students – and counting.

Daniel said they had to adopt the double shifting scheme to accommodate all enrollees. The first shift is from 7 a.m. to 12 noon, and the second shift is from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Daniel said some classes have to be relocated to their makeshift classrooms or temporary shelters “because we simply can’t accommodate all our students.”

The school was likewise forced to refuse transferees, Daniel noted, and only accommodate old students who still have to enroll.

“Unfortunately, we are now refusing enrolment because of the classroom problem and we simply cannot accommodate everybody. Everybody wants to come to our school but we can (only) take in so much,” he said.

Meantime, teachers have to deal with 50-60 students per class, and even take on several classes.
There were at least 220 teachers at DCPNHS. Some teachers opted to use lapel mic during classes to preserve their voice and prevent fatigue.

At the faculty room, Grade 7 teacher Brigida Badlon was checking her lapel mic before proceeding to class.

Badlon, 39, has been using lapel mic in her classes for the past six years.

According to her, using lapel mic has prove practical and effective since it enabled her to overcome usual classroom noises and distractions like the clatter of students hustling through the hallway and sound from an on-going construction of classroom buildings.

“It helps me not to raise my voice and it relaxes me,” said Badlon, who bought her own lapel mic.
