By Leo Udtohan

PANGLAO, Bohol- After two years, members of the Danao Beach Community Association (DBCA) have finally conducted a gift-giving program for the children of Barangay Danao here on Saturday, Dec. 10, reflecting the association's continuing commitment to supporting the community.

Angie Hoffman-Vidas, president of DBCA, said that about 500 children attended the half-day event held at the covered court of the village.

"The annual gift-giving is our way of  giving back to the community.  It is also a great opportunity for DBCA to partake in spreading love during the Yuletide season,” said Hoffman.

The gift-giving which started in 2009 was halted for two years because of the pandemic and typhoon Odette (Rai).

"We are glad we're able to give back even in the pandemic we were able to share a little," Hoffman said.

From 250 children in 2019, it grew to 500.

Guindulman is home of province's tallest Christmas tree

By Leo Udtohan

Christmas is undoubtedly the most wonderful time of the year.

Houses and businesses are adorned with Christmas lights and decors. The streets are filled with music and people are in a jolly and celebratory mood.

There is something extra special about Guindulman town during Christmas time. It is home of the province's tallest Christmas tree.

The 65-foot Christmas tree which stands on the corner of the town hall becomes an instant attraction.

There’s more: The Christmas tree with multi-colored bulbs is adorned with 1,650 toys donated by Libres Clan and members of the Guindulman Association of California Southern Area (Gacsa).

The tree has a design that advocates for joy, simplicity, durability, and resiliency.

Guindulman Mayor Ben Balo said the importance of the Christmas tree would bring joy to the children and residents.

He emphasized the importance of every resident’s hope in the recovery of the town from the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years and typhoon Odette (Rai) which devastated the province last year.

"The celebration this year is very special because it is a symbol that we have overcome the different challenges," said Balo.

With the Christmas tree as the centerpiece, holiday merrymaking at Guindulman included a giant belen (nativity scene) and inter-barangay belen and daygon (Christmas carol) singing contests on Dec. 17-18.

The 19 villages also decorated the roads with parols (stars) and candy canes.

After the Christmas season, the toys from the tree will be given to children on Jan. 6 on the Feast of the Epiphany or Three Kings' Day.

Cultural worker Julan Cordova was also suprised to see the giant Christmas tree.

"This is the nicest and the tallest Christmas tree I've ever seen in the province of Bohol this year," he said.

Promenaders can take pictures of the holiday tree and other decorations from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Guindulman, at least 85 km from Tagbilaran City, is an old town situated in the eastern part of Bohol. It is said that if twilight falls, the area became dark or “dulum” in the local dialect.

Balo said because of the Christmas lights, the lights overcome darkness.

"The town is no longer overtaken by darkness as we are moving forward for progress," said Balo.

He plans to develop unexplored tourist sites where there is a huge potential to promote tourism as part of the town's tourism planning and at the same time provide a sustainable livelihood to the people.

Next year, Guindulman will join the 1st Bohol Loop Dive Expo 2023 where it will showcase its stunning and healthy colorful coral garden and many hidden dive sites for local and international divers.

Bohol holds 'pastores' contests to preserve tradition

By Leo Udtohan

TAGBILARAN CITY- Bright and colorful lights filled the provincial Capitol of Bohol grounds and CPG Park on Wednesday night, Dec. 7 to the delight of the hundreds who were present to mark the official start of the Christmas celebration here.

Gov. Aris Aumentado led the countdown which was crowded by employees, officials and residents to witness the official lighting of the Capitol's giant belen (nativity scene) and other Christmas decorations.

He said this year's Christmas celebration, people can sense a feeling of peace, joy, love and goodwill after the pandemic halted the celebration for two years.

"In our busy lives, we should remember the birth of Jesus Christ. He is the reason to be thankful and to celebrate," he said.

He also encouraged his constituents to spread the spirit of joy in their homes and the community and to see the celebration as an opportunity to rekindle acts of love and kindness to one another.

"The life of Jesus Christ is a source of inspiration to all of us to lead a life of virtue and faith," he said.

Also present during the event were Vice Gov. Victor Balite, Mayors Jane Yap, Tata Palacio, Lahar Ayuban and Jed Piollo.

Deputy chief of staff Kit Oppus, former Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Assistant Secretary and now provincial administrator Aster Caberte, Center for Culture and Arts Development (CCAD) head  Filipina Asoy-Piollo and Goldie Herrera also attended the event.

Known as "Kasadya 2022" the event also coincided with the "Pastores" contest which aimed to revive and preserve the tradition.

The pastores (Shepherds) is a musical re-enactment of the age-old story of Nativity where the performers are wearing colorful costumes and props.

The tradition was introduced by Spanish priests in the late-1800s. It spread across the region that it became part of the Yuletide celebration in Bohol province although there are variations in different towns.

Prof. Marianito Luspo, a local historian, said that the tradition faces the threat of discontinuity in the province.

Somehow the tradition lost its luster from a lack of interest from the youth to the influences of modern music and the lack of interest by the locals due to the intricacies in performing it.

Aumentado said the provincial government decided to hold the contest in order to  preserve this intangible cultural heritage.

For this year's tilt, the municipality of Corella won the first place with P150, 000 cash prize for their traditional dramatic representation of the shepherds’ adoration of singing and dancing. It also won the Best in Heritage Content and Best in Production Design awards.

Lila town named second placer with P1000,000 cash prize, while Loay town was third placer with P75,000 cash prize.

Meanwhile, Jagna town won the Best in Instrumentation.

Contingents from Tagbilaran City and municipalities of Bilar, Tubigon, Guindulman and Jagna received P30, 000 each as a consolation prize.

Jun Camacho, trainor and coach of Corella team, said the pastores contest allowed the people, especially the youth to embrace the Filipino culture.

"I'm very thankful to the provincial government of Bohol for having this kind of activity which is helpful to our youth for them to feel the Filipino culture," said Camacho, a cultural worker and choreographer.

The Corella team was composed of 30 performers from Corella National High School.

Camacho said at first it was difficult to introduce pastores to the youth because of "generation gap".

"The youth were exposed to hiphop but through practices they've learned to appreciate it. It is a must to continue holding pastores for the revitalization of our rich culture," he said.

Carla Mae Telmo, 1st Badjao registered nurse

By Leo Udtohan

TAGBILARAN CITY- For Carla Mae Telmo who passed the nurse licensure examination (NLE)  last November 2022, part of her success was due to being a Badjao and she wants to repay the community.

Telmo, 22, is the first registered nurse in the Badjao Community in Barangay Totolan in Dauis town, to have achieved such milestone — a feat uncommon in her tribe.

"I am very thankful to God who heard my prayers. This success is not only for me but also to my family and my Badjao tribe. I am very proud to be a Badjao," she said.

The Telmo family was overjoyed over Carla's success.

"I am very happy we have a nurse a now. His father and I are happy that she passed the board. We thank the Lord he heard our prayers," Merlinda Telmo-Agdan, her mother, said.

Mario Coham, the chieftain of the Badjao community, said the whole community was proud of her achievement.

"She serves as an inspiration to all Badjao kids here," said the 62-year-old chieftain.

Proud of her roots, Telmo said being a Badjao was the reason and bridge for her to study and qualify in various scholarships from the government and private sectors.

"Because of being a Badjao, I was able to reach my dreams. And now I was able to make them proud," said Telmo who was also a former beauty queen who joined beauty pageants. She became Miss Booy 2018 and Mutya sa Tagbilaran 2019  2nd runner-up.

She said her childhood dream was to work in an office, but an incident in February 2017 changed it. At least 21 Badjao children were rushed to a hospital in Tagbilaran City due to gastroenteritis that it caused one death.

"That incident opened my eyes," said Telmo. " I told myself I hope I can do something if it will happen again. Right there and then, I decided to become a nurse. I want to help them in the future."

It was not at all easy, as Telmo described her journey that got her to success. She went through hardships just be where she is right now.

Her father, Carlos, a carpenter, and her mother Merlinda, a housewife, supported her through the way. She found inspiration from her two two siblings: Joana, 17, and Maria Cathlyn, 12.

Telmo, like most people from her tribe, suffered discrimination and financial problems.

She finished her elementary at Booy South Elem. School. She finished her high school at Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School. She painfully recollected the memory of how she almost forced to quit school because of lack of money.

But getting a college degree drummed into Telmo’s head. Fortunately, the Badjao Bridge Philippines, a non-profit organization helping Badjao people, became instrumental to help Telmo finished her nursing degree.  It helped Telmo overcame her financial struggles. She fervently studied and passed the exam.

She remained in gratitude to every one who helped her throughout her journey. In return, she promised to work to help her fellow tribe.

"I would like to apply in a public hospital because Badjao people often go there to seek health care. I want to be able to serve them in any way, I can accommodate the Badjao people. Of course they will also see that I did not leave them even after I finished my education," she said.

As granddaughter of the chieftain, Telmo knows too well why education should be integrated in their culture.

"I hope education will be appreciated because it is really the key to our success.  I hope our Badjao people will value education."

Bohol records 2, 272 dengue cases

TAGBILARAN CITY- A total of 2,272 cases of dengue and one fatality have been reported in 2022 in Bohol, the provincial government reported.

Data provided by the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit under the provincial Health Office (PHO) said this year recorded a 1,198.3% uptick in dengue cases compared to last year’s 175 and one death.

Ages susceptible to contracting the dengue range from 0 to 82, with 14 years as the median age.

The male population has the highest number of recorded dengue cases (54.93%) compared to their female counterparts, with the 5-10 age group being the most affected by the dengue disease.

Leonidas Saniel, provincial Dengue program coordinator, explained that the Department of Health (DOH) often records an upward trend in dengue cases every three years.

PHO assured the public that they are closely coordinating with rural health units by amplifying the National Dengue Prevention and Control Program and the 4S strategy of DOH.

The enhanced 4S campaign stands for search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, secure self-protection measures like wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts and daily use of mosquito repellent, seek early consultation, and support fogging/spraying only in hotspot areas where increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.

According to Saniel, some municipalities lack preventive measures in fighting against dengue, especially in mobilizing the purok dengue task forces, Dengue awareness campaigns, lack of political will from barangay officials, and adopting the Municipal Dengue Ordinance.

Saniel encouraged municipalities to adopt more strategies against the virus. Suggested approaches include intensive
massive and intensive information education and communication (IEC) campaign in villages, regular surveillances by purok dengue task forces at least once a week, lobby support from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and encouraging community vigilance, and mobilizing search and destroy programs.

In Tagbilaran City, Mayor Jane Yap has ordered a more intensified campaign against the spread of dengue among the city’s barangays as cases continue to rise.

The mayor is looking at activating more anti-dengue task forces which are going to facilitate information drives on how to prevent the spread of dengue among residents of the different barangays of the city.

According to City Health Office spokesman Robin Culpa, as of Oct. 31, 2022, about 232 dengue cases have been recorded in Tagbilaran City.

He added that there were only 51 dengue cases recorded in 2021. There were no dengue-related deaths in 2022.

Marcela Farms opens new feed mill

By Leo Udtohan

A business magnate in Bohol province is urging farmers to plant corn and cassava due to the commodities’ emerging local market demand.

Marlito Uy, chief executive officer of Marcela Farms, said that local farmers should realize that these crops are potential raw materials for processing and value adding.

"We need five million kilos or 100 million kilos per month of corn. We are willing to help our farmers. We could provide farm equipment and fertilizer to increase their production and we will buy their products," said Uy during the blessing and ribbon cutting ceremony of their new Marcela Farms feedmill on Wednesday (Nov. 16) in Barangay Lomangog in Ubay town.

So far, they sourced out corn from Mindanao.

"I asked the provincial government to partner with us in assisting our farmers to increase their inputs. In Bohol, farmers can produce three to four tons of corn per hectare," he added.

Bohol has devoted 45% land area to agriculture with rice as number one staple. It is considered the rice bowl in Central Visayas.  However, there are no more 100 hectares of sporadic and backyard -based corn plantations.

Data from the Bohol Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (Bedipo) said that rice production  in the province produced 225,548 metric tons or covers 70,117.00 ha of which only 56.11% or 39,346.00 ha are irrigated areas.

In 2018, there are about 11,983 ha of land harvested with corn or 11,216 metric tons. Much of these lands are utilized for white corn production and some lands for yellow corn production.

Being an alternative food for rice, corn is consumed by about 16% of Bohol’s population. The industrial demand for this crop is also increasing, as the livestock sector in the province continues to prosper.

Marcela Farms, part of the Alturas Group of Companies (AGC), has opened the P500-million Marcela Farms feed mill which has the capacity to produce 30 tons of hog and poultry feeds per hour considered among Asia’s few large-scale feed mills.

The new multi-story structure incorporates top-of-the-line Dutch company Van Aarsen International equipment is the third mill of the company.

The automated feed production line takes care of the intake, grinding, mixing, pelleting, and bagging of animal and aqua feeds.  It serves the dietary requirements of all Marcela Farms’ livestock and aqua operations while utilizing efficient waste management.

The new technology at the mill would help make production workers more efficient and constructive. The company added that the mill is spacious, with abundant warehouse storage and room to work.

“We have been in the agri business for forty years, and it is a crucial part of the success of the Alturas Group. The farm is our main source of livestock for Alturas Malls, providing consistent and high-quality produce for Bohol, Cebu, and other areas,” said Uy.

Marcela Farms serves the food needs -  hogs, chicken, eggs, prawns, fish, and rice of the province and institutional customers all over the country and abroad.

Alongside local food security, Marcela Farms believes that sustainability through environmental protection is a must.  It supports the Alturas Group’s commitment to sustainable practices and technology.

To reduce its carbon footprint, the company operates the biggest solar farm project in Bohol, with a combined capacity of two megawatts.  The excess power is delivered to the local grid as part of the government’s net metering scheme.

Marcela Farms also has a biomass facility responsible for compacting 100% rice hulls used as solid biofuel for industrial plant boilers and as bedding for poultry breeding sites.

Moreover, its organic fertilizer facility has an operating capacity of at least 350 bags a day, while its rendering facility converts 100% poultry plant waste into protein meal for feeds.

Marcela Farms also had the first certified animal-waste biogas in Southeast Asia in 2012.  Two biogas installations are currently operational -  one supplies 1.5 megawatts for the hog farm, and the other provides methane fuel for plant boilers.

The mill also provided jobs to at least hundred of Boholanos.

The event was attended by Governor Aris Aumentado, former Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) assistant secretary and now provincial administrator Aster Caberte, Bishop Abet Uy, Ubay Mayor Constantino Reyes and officials, San Miguel Mayor Ian Uy, Alicia Mayor Cesyl Balahay, Barangay Lomangog Captain Felix Cutamora, Peter Dejaresco, Dr. Bing Lapiz, farmers' groups and suppliers.

Aumentado said that Alturas has become a part of the lives of the Boholanos and through their different businesses across the province, many have benefitted from the comfort they have provided.

"This project will also help us in the pursuit of agricultural development in our province. Through this, we can aim for a higher production of hog and poultry feeds that will make us a prime producer of the said product," said Aumentado.

He also emphasized that for more raw materials in the production of feeds, farmers can avail from the provincial government the necessary asssitance and loans for the purchase of materials like fertilizers, and also the purchase of their harvests through the buyback scheme.

Caberte said it was only Uy who dared to take the challenge to venture on this kind of business.

Benedicto Atuel, 65,  a farmer from Barangay Bay-ang in Ubay town, shared that he was happy that Marcela Farms is interested to buy their products.

He said they have assurance that they can sell their product in the market.

As survivor of typhoon Odette that destroyed their farmlands last year, he needed support to bounce back.

As the group approaches its 50th anniversary in 2023, AGC brings forward values unique to the brand, anchored on strategic, sustainable progress and in line with its main slogan, "Serving the community, uplifting lives."

Boholano wins Great Man of the Universe PH

By Leo Udtohan

TAGBILARAN CITY-  Joshua Marapao Lillehagen of Bohol was declared as the winner of Great Man of the Universe Philippines 2022, the first edition of the pageant held on Sunday night, Nov. 13 at the Novotel Manila.

"After winning the title, I was in awe. Indescribable feeling. I was trying so hard not to cry on stage, " said the 19-year-old man from Calape town. He bested other 39 candidates from the country and overseas.

Lillegen also received the “Darling of the Press” award. His video on Bohol province was declared Best in Tourism and Culture Video.

He said joining the Great Man of the Universe Philippines was the smartest thing he has done so far.

"I think the smartest thing I’ve done so far was joining this pageant Great Man of the Universe Philippines, and gaining exposure and getting back into modelling, which is a passion of mine ever since 2018 when I first started modelling," said Lillehagen who is currently doing his Bachelor’s degree in media and communications in the University of Wollongong in Dubai.

He dreamed to become an actor.

"I’ve never actually thought about doing modelling as a kid, however it has always been my dream to get into acting and becoming a big movie star one day. It then became a dream of mine to become an ABS CBN actor too after watching TFC with my Lola when I was a kid," he said.

He described himself  brave and competitive." I never back down from a challenge and when I do take up a challenge I will do anything and everything to win," he said.

In Bohol, he won the Sandugo Festival King 2018.

As a tourist destination, he said his province has so much.

"Bohol as a whole is an amazing island, and there’s too many places in Bohol that are a great place to visit that I cannot choose one specific place," he said.

His message to the world:  "Anything is possible if you put your mind to it, if you really try, if you really put your heart and soul, plus blood and tears, everything can be achieved."

Boholano medical board topnotcher: Never give up on your dreams

By Leo Udtohan

For 31-year-old Mark Johnuel Matabilas Duavis who placed 10th in the October 2022 physician licensure examination, he wants to stay in the country to serve his fellowmen.

"I would probably stay in the country," said Duavis, a native of Buenavista town in Bohol province.

He said for the longest time, he wanted to become a physician but his family is just not able to support him financially.

"Without the help of Department of Health, University of Cebu- School of Medicine and the taxpayers, I could have not realized this dream. Without the scholarship I could never make it to become a doctor. I owe this success to everyone. So paying it forward, I would like to serve the people who have made this dream a big reality," said Duavis, who is also a registered nurse.

God’s will

Duavis had an average of 87. He shared the same spot with other four passers. He said it was God's will he made it to the top 10.

"It feels surreal. After the second and third subjects, I already told myself that this is probably not for me, that being part of that list would be too lofty of an aspiration. Answering through the 4th to the 12th subject, I just surrendered everything to Him and allowed him to work His miracles for me. When the results came out, it was a total shock. It really made me cry. It was something beyond my hands. It was His will and His intercession that really made a spot for me in the top 10," Duavis shared.

Like other examinees, he prepared for the exam.  He began allocating a particular number of hours per day for review especially on subjects that he was not very good at. After clerkship, he went to post-graduate internship where a bigger chunk of his time was dedicated to reviewing for the boards.

He said it was a monotonous cycle of sleeping, waking up, eating, studying and studying repeated for the entire four months.

Duavis shared that he had no secret in topping the exam.

"I think it was not really much of a secret but I did make sure I follow my schedule. Medicine is such a vast field and there are just so many subjects, specialties and concepts that you need to digest. Sticking to a good schedule and game plan really made a huge difference. Also, I spare an hour in between study periods for meal and nap breaks. I also give time to play with my dog, play the Nintendo Switch and watch something that is not medically related. Somehow it managed to make me sane until the four-month review season finally reached an end. I also made sure to have at least six hours of sleep everyday. You really cannot afford to be sick because it derails your schedule. Nevertheless, the abovementioned, I think, were not really secrets since a lot of medical students that I know have the same gameplan. I also think it probably boiled down to diligence and determination," he shared.

Pride of Bohol

For the people of Buenavista, Duavis brought pride and honor to his hometown and the province of Bohol.

"Mark is making history as the first topnotcher in physician licensure examination in Buenavista. He is an inspiration to the young people that constant efforts, patience and perseverance, clubbed with strong determination can bring you success," said Buenavista Mayor Dave Duallo.

The mayor said a cash incentive and plaque of recognition will be given to Duavis based on municipal ordinance in 2014.

He will also have his new car as the University of Cebu, Banilad campus continues to reward its board exam topnotchers with brand new cars.

"The tradition continues. This Toyota Wigo Car, a  gift from our Chairman, Atty. Augusto Go is waiting for our  OCTOBER Physician Licensure Examination board placer Dr. Mark Johnuel Duavis. Congratulations," read the Facebook post of the University of Cebu College of Medicine.

Valedictorian

Duavis' father Noel, 53, is a school district supervisor in Inabanga, while his mother Marilu, 53, is a public school nurse in  Inabanga and Buenavista towns.

He has two siblings: Jay Mark, 30, and Myra Lou, 23.

Duavis finished his elementary at Cangawa Elem. School in his hometown as class valedictorian. At Cangawa National High School, he also graduated valedictorian.

He studied Bachelor of Science in Nursing at University of Bohol (UB) while being involved in extra-curricular activities in school and Samahang Kabataan Volunteers Club. He was crowned Mister UB Personality 2009 and first runner-up in Mister and Miss Teen Bohol 2009.

Duavis passed the nursing licensure examination in 2011. He took up Master of Science in Nursing major in Medical Surgical Nursing in 2018 at Cebu Normal University.

He graduated cum laude and class valedictorian at University of Cebu- School of Medicine.

He earned his Diploma in Strategic Human Resource Management and Development at Ateneo de Manila University, Center for Organization, Research and Development and diploma in Transformation Leadership in Health Communication, Communication for Communicators School managed by Johns Hopkins University Center for Communications Program and Asian Institute of Management- Zuellig Center of Development Management.

Never give up

He is not new to community health service since he worked as a community health nurse at Department of Health (DOH), he then worked as project associate at Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis and became a training officer at DOH Region VII.

Duavis plans to get a residency in Internal Medicine.

His advised to students: “Never give up on your dreams no matter how siguro impossible it may seem because once you strive to aspire and do whatever it takes to reach that it will happen.  I do hope everyone will be able to take on the challenge whatever your heart’s desire. Grab it. Life is just once. You don't want to spend the entirety of life regretful for things you have not done or you always wanted to do or not given the chance.”

"My income is not enough. That's why I'm happy that the medical mission helped a lot.  And they served us for free,” he said in the vernacular.

“We are thankful to municipal government of Getafe for welcoming us to conduct our medical mission. There will be more medical missions scheduled in other towns," said Elmer Francis "Jun" Pasion, chairman of PH Cares.

Pasion said he was happy that the activity was successful through the assistance of the provincial government led by Governor Aris Aumentado, 2nd district Rep. Vanessa Aumentado, Getafe Mayor Cary Camacho and former Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) administrator Benjie Oliva. Also present during the event was board member Jamie Villamor.

Vanessa Aumentado expressed gratitude to PH Cares and Rotary Club of Pasay Cyber City for delivering the much-needed services to the residents in her district who are not capable of supporting their medical needs
