HNU now Bohol’s first solar-powered university

Wake-uppers:
Seen:  Spotted in Bohol last Friday was Gigi Caciuleanu, world famous choreographer, professor and contemporary dance innovator on cultural management, identity and Diasporas and the transformative power of dance. He is in Bohol to share his specific technique and his original style of contemporary dance during the Bansay sa Ting-init 2016’s 2nd Bohol International Workshop. Gardy Labad is the project director.

Scene: We fell head over heels for places like Loon’s Danicop Ticugan Spring, one of the least-visited springs in Bohol.  It is accessible to hikers and visitors who want to beat the heat. You can indulge in the soothing coolness of the spring. The trees growing on cliffs and mountain slopes give the place a cool ambience to beat the summer heat. And the good thing: No entrance fee.

The Holy Name University (HNU) has joined the ranks of universities in the country adopting solar power harvesting technology as a way to bring down energy costs.

School officials on Friday assembled on the rooftop of the HNU’s fifth floor at Scanlon Building to inaugurate a solar photovoltaic power plant composed of 1,100 solar thin film panels provided by OrionGroup International Inc.

Some employees and guests check the 1,100 solar thin film panels provided by OrionGroup International Inc. on the rooftop of the Holy Name University (HNU) in Tagbilaran City, Bohol province.  HNU is the first academic institution to fully integrate solar power energy system in the province and the Visayas.

Also present were former HNU president Fr. Florante Camacho, Dr. Christopher Bernido, chairman of HNU’s board of trustees, some deans, teachers and the media- Bohol’s Queen of All Media Ardy Araneta, Dave Albarado, Rey Chiu, Liz Butron and Angeline Valencia.

The solar power plant is capable of producing 100 kilowatts of electricity, said Engr. Rynor Jamandre, president of OrionGroup International Inc.

Jamandre said solar power is the use of the sun’s energy. He said that concerns over pollution, environmental degradation and resource depletion have led to an increasing awareness of the importance of developing solar energy.

HNU (formerly the Divine World College of Tagbilaran), founded in 1947, is the first academic institution to fully integrate solar power energy system in Bohol and Visayas.

Jamandre also said that HNU’s solar power plant is the largest thin film solar installation in the country as of today.  He said most projects are using crystalline solar panel. The power production can be remotely monitored from an Android or iphone devices.

HNU president Fr. Francisco Estepa, SVD, said it would save the school roughly 20 to 25 percent of its monthly energy cost.

“We believe there’s other energy in the environment we could tap.  The solar energy is safer and cheaper. We really contribute to the cooling of the earth,” he said.

There are many advantages of solar power, said Jamandre.

“Of course, you save your energy bill every month; the roof will always be cooler because you have a cover of solar panels. And the most important is we save carbon emission. It’s very important because global warming is a reality. We are doing our part to make it happen one project at a time,” he said.

The solar power can be used for many years, said Jamandre.

With the project, HNU joined other Manila universities in the use of solar energy, namely La Consolacion College,  Manuel L. Quezon University,  St. Scholastica’s College and Mapua Institute of Technology.

BBM’s whirlwind visit to Bohol

While you and I were sleeping, Vice Presidentiable Sen. Ferdinand “BongBong” Marcos Jr. had a whirlwind visit to Bohol last Thursday to meet local officials and renew social ties.

His tandem, presidential aspirant Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago was not present.

 in Tagbilaran City.  Leo Udtohan/Chronicle
Marcos was to meet some members of the Bohol United Opposition (BUO). But before the program would start, the venue had power outage.

He blamed the administration for sitting on the power supply problem in the country.

“Ang  experience ko sa kampanya saan ako pumunta may brown-out e. Yesterday, the day before yesterday ganyan din. Pinuputulan kami ng kuryente everywhere we go. I don’t know  kung ito’y  artificial or talagang..but there is really a big demand that cannot be supplied sa power sa Visayas including Mindanao,” Marcos told Bohol reporters.

He said the administration’s lack of foresight and planning has worsened power supply in Visayas and Mindanao.

“Luzon is beginning to feel it,” he said, “The problem is wala talagang ginawang plano kasi itong gobyiernong ito para sa infrastruktura  na kailangan natin kaya nagkaganito. They have been in power for 6 years they have not able to do anything. Matagal na naming winawarningan yun tungkol sa power supply pero wala naman silang ginagawa.  That’s why this is it. Ito, dedicated sa akin itong brown-out sa akin.”

He also said the government has to examine sources of energy.

“It is very difficult to re-open the power nuclear plant. We already sold the fuel already.  There’s no fuel anymore. If we are going to rehabilitate it to standard of today, sa laki ng gagastusin natin  we might need to put up a new one. But we have to examine the potential of nuclear, we need to examine alternative energies,  we need to examine the traditional sources of energy because we have to increase our power supply and we have to lower our cost of production.”

In other developing and developed countries, they are using nuclear because it is the cheapest to produce power, he added.

Bohol has no power supply based in the island and the existing power load is dependent on the power from the geothermal plant in Leyte. In 2013, the power supply was disrupted causing blackouts and water shortage when Leyte was hit by Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda).

Marcos spoke before at least 200 members, mostly mayors and vice-mayors, of BUO, a local political party organized by Bohol 2nd district Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado.

BUO is also supporting presidential aspirant Vice Pres. Jejomar Binay.

Prominent members of BUO who met Marcos were former Carmen Mayor Che Toribio-delos Reyes who is running for Bohol’s 3rd district representative against incumbent Rep. Art Yap and Loay Mayor Rosemarie Lim-Imboy who is running for governor against incumbent Gov. Edgar Chatto.

Marcos also told reporters that he met Vice Gov. Conching Lim.

“Magkilala na kasi kami. Siya ay dating member ng Blue Ladies,” he said.

“Blue Ladies” was Imelda Marcos’ gang or sort of ladies in waiting composed of the strong, high-profile women or the wives of the country’s top businessman and the Marcos cronies. They were the center of social life in the Marcos years. They were called Blue Ladies, after the color the campaigners of the late Ferdinand Marcos wore when he ran for reelection in 1969 (Sergio Osmeña ran against Marcos).

Marcos in his speech said that he was ready to serve the country.

He also said that it was not a problem whoever would win president since all presidentiables were his friends.

Madali kaming magtrabaho together.  Si Grace, kapatid ko, e walang problema," said Marcos who laughed on the last part about Poe.

He continued, "Kaya sinasabi ko, kaya ako nalang ang best position na maging best president. Biro lang ha, kung minsan nagbibiro ng ganyan.“

Before he left the venue, he took a look of an old photograph showing his father, the late Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, who was with the late Gov. Erico Aumentado and former Pres. Carlos P. Garcia.

Prayers and hardwork paved the way for three Boholano nursing graduates to land in the 10 topnotchers of the May 2015 nursing licensure examination. Thus, a good year for Bohol's nursing schools.

Euben Hope Olaso Gamutan, Krissa Mae Duco Lapiz and Christine Joy Camilotes Roferos went to different schools, prayed in different churches and reviewed in different styles but there’s one common denominator---topnotchers! Gamutan finished fifth place with a rating of 85 percent, Lapiz was ranked sixth place with a rating of 84.8 percent and Roferos landed on the eighth spot with a rating of 84.4 percent.

Euben Hope Olaso Gamutan who placed fifth in the May 2015
licensure exam for nurses :'All I can say is God is good!
In everything we do, we should trust  God and
acknowledge that without Him, we are nothing.'
They shared there is only one secret in preparing for the board exam.

“Prayer. That is my best secret. I prayed for wisdom and for strength that I can endure all the sleepless nights,” Gamutan told VRS. “Of course, I also had to do my part in studying. I usually isolate myself when studying because that is where I can concentrate the most.”

“Prayer. I prayed a lot. When I had time I went to the Sto. Niño and I prayed not just to top but to pass including my classmates as well,” Roferos said.

Gamutan, Lapiz and Roferos were among the 9,707 aspirants who passed the May examination out of a total of 17,896 examinees, according to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

Gamutan obtained his nursing degree at University of Bohol (UB), Lapiz graduated from Holy Name University  (HNU) and Roferos got hers at Cebu Normal University (CNU). Roferos who hails from Loon town was the high school valedictorian of the University of Bohol - Loon Institute.

Studying strategically and prayers
Gamutan shared that he already prepared himself to pass the examination while still studying. “The best preparations I did were during my years as a nursing student. I strived to do my best in every single quiz and to make the most of my exposures in the hospital duties. Also, as early as one year before the exam, I already started reading books/reviewers, reviewing notes, and answering sample board questions.”

Roferos, who was inspired by her aunt who is also a nurse, said she just read textbooks. “I read my textbooks one at a time but with certain comprehension. I had enough rest and sleep. I usually sleep a lot. Just listening to random audiobooks, dili pada sa pressure. Just learn at your own pace.”

Gamutan found his trust in the Lord, which he said is his source of comfort.  He said he didn’t ask to become a topnotcher.

“Honestly, I never asked God that I would be a topnotcher. The only thing I repeatedly pray was that God will help me to do my best and that whatever the results will be, His name will be glorified,” he said.

He learned he had topped the exam from his friends and when he opened his Facebook account on Tuesday morning and saw messages of congratulations from friends. Since the information came from friends, he had reservations at first and waited for the news from the PRC.

“It feels unreal! Maybe because I really wasn’t expecting this. It’s amazing how God has blessed me this much. All I asked for was for me to do my best, and He gave me even more,” Gamutan said.

On Wednesday night, Gamutan wrote on Facebook: “The Lord has always been my source of everything! None of this would have been possible without HIM!! TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY!!!!!!!!Thank you everyone for all your prayers!

Eight placer Christine Joy Camilotes Roferos: ‘God answers prayers.’

He thanked his family- father Alexander, mother Reinalda Josephine, siblings Xela Reina and James Michael, and other relatives: “Primarily, it was my family. Everytime I felt pressured, they reminded me that all I had to do was to trust God to help me do my best. Our Dean, clinical instructors, and reviewers also inspired me to push myself to my full potentials. They encouraged me to aim high and believed in what I could achieve with God’s help.”

Roferos said she still couldn’t believe the results of the exam. She was at home when she received a text message from her best friend informing her that she topped the exam. “It was surreal, I wasn't expecting na ma-top jud. But I hoped though...”

She has reservations at first and waited for the official results from the PRC. “I mean, really? Topnotcher ko? Overwhelming kaayo.”

She thanked her aunt, her mother Zulueta, father Jaime (deceased), younger sister Charysse Jane and younger brother Christian James, relatives and friends for the support.

Lapiz’s Facebook status read: “Not because of who I am but because of what you've done. Not because of what I've done but because of who you are. It was all HIM. To God be the glory.”

Asked by VRS if they wanted to work abroad, Gamutan said: “I’d love to spend my first working experiences here in the Philippines. But if given the opportunity, I would also love to extend my service to other countries. Anywhere will do actually.”

“I haven't decided yet as to where I would want to work pa,” Roferos said.

It’s never too late.

Beauty watchers were hopeful that the Holy Name University (HNU) would have time to include male candidates in the school pageant. It took many years to realize, thanks to Stephen Bryan Yu Bongcaras, Central Student Organization (CSO) president and secretary-general of the 9th National Youth Parliament.

Bongcaras, who also won in several personality pageants in the province, has a penchant for pageants.

Known as Miss Holy Name College (HNC), Miss DWC-T Personality (which was held at the time when Martial Law was at its peak after Marcos' declaration)  and Miss HNU, it produced many beauty queens like the late Mrs. Pastora Mendoza Visarra and Miss DWCT 1976 Ms. Lety Tinampay- Te, who according to Bohol’s seasoned host and “beauty expert”,  one of the most elegant Miss DWCT winners who reigned during the golden years of pageantry in Divine Word College of Tagbilaran City.”

Capitalizing on promoting social relevance and a sense of responsibility and volunteerism among the youth, the CSO of HNU headed by Bongcaras, produced the first-ever Mr. and Ms. Holy Name University (HNU) Personality.

In the afternoon of February 8, the 16 candidates representing the different departments and campus organizations shared a piece of their minds to the panel of interrogators led by Rev. Fr. Dudz Lero, during the one-on-one interview and pre-pageant judging which constituted 30 percent of the total score.

In the evening at the HNU Gymnasium, the pageant highlighted the CSO “BIG” Night which showcased the “BIG” advocacy projects, namely Bohol Red Cross' participation to the Million Volunteer Run 2, I Transform Hambabauran Initiative and the Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge in March 2013 in the municipalities of Antequera and Talibon, aside from the candidates sashaying on stage in their best behavior and bearing wearing production number outfits, professional and formal attire. In the grueling question and answer portion, each male and female candidates were made to share their insights on individual and common questions.

Cool but witty Collin Chio Joshua Jubac and statuesque Candy Cumayas romped to victory over their contenders and were crowned Mr. and Miss HNU Personality 2013, respectively. Noriefumi Palban and Crizelle Jade Requierme were proclaimed first runners-up, while Ralph Melchor Lacang and Melanie Quimson were adjudged second runners-up.

Other male candidates were Arjo Carajay, Kenneth Salabsab, Kevin Cantoneros, Vincent Descallar and Jason John Japon, with their female counterparts April Joy Baliong, Ezra May Corona, Suzanne Mae Campos, Tanya Bianca Schreurs and Ann Lorraine Ladera.

EJ Relampagos, Bohol’s fashion guru, Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao-Gabin, City Information Officer and Miss Tagbilaran 1987, and HNU’s Fr. Ruel S. Gado, high school and grade school chaplain composed the board of judges.

“I am overwhelmed with how good all the candidates look and speak their minds... to think it was all impromptu... wow!!! :) Kudos to all Holynamians! And of course to the organizing committee headed by Stephen Bryan Yu Bongcaras, congratulations for staging a decent and relevant personality search.  You guys did not only make history for the school, you also made a big difference in promoting social responsibility. You just proved that the quality of a beauty pageant does not rely on how much is spent for it, but it is the dedication of every person involved that makes it simply amazing,” EJ posted on Facebook, after the pageant.

Gracing the affair were Fr. Francisco T. Estepa, SVD, university president, Fr. Ruel F. Lero, SVD, vice-president for Academic Affairs and Fr. Vicente L. Uy, SVD, vice-president for administration,  and Nanelyn D. Wate, Student Affair's Office director. Pageant hosts were Stephen Bongcaras, Mr. Olive-C Bohol first runner-up and Lara Lumayag, Miss Teen Bohol 2012 second runner-up and Miss Friendship awardee.
