Beauty queen and model Adelyn Joy Sajol Esclamado was crowned Miss  University of Bohol Personality 2016 last  Thursday, beating  other contestants from  the different departments held at the university ground.

The 19-year-old  Adelyn, daughter of  Teodoro and Helen  from Pilar town,  accepted her tiara with minimum fuss, waving calmly to the audience as the other contestants hugged and kissed her. 

"I’m happy and proud because all the sacrifices I have invested have paid off," she said afterward, grinning broadly.  Adelyn, who represented the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA)  also won  best in production number, best in casual wear, best in evening gown, body beautiful, best in talent 1st runner up and best in interview 2nd runner up.

Adelyn shared that she was trained how to walk and answer the Q and A.

“Aside from preparations I made for my talent, how to answer questions and how I walk properly like a beauty queen, I prepared myself for the tension I might feel on stage. I prepared myself on how to hold my emotions on stage and in front of many people,” she said, “Because I have to admit that one of my fears is presenting myself to the public and standing before a big crowd. And all those preparations and sacrifices I have invested have paid off.”

The contestants' bright smiles never faltered as they sashayed and twirled across the stage in the oldest uninterrupted surviving major campus pageant in  Bohol province. More than just a beauty pageant, Mr and Miss UB Personality is the only pageant in the province (and perhaps in the country) which required its candidates to undergo a personality test using the standardized testing tool 16 Personality Factor (16PF).

US-based socialite Mikey Gatal said he is proud of Adelyn’s victory.

"She was very sure of herself," Mikey told VRS on Skype. "Most of them would tell me that having the experience of modeling the signature OMG shirts gave them the boost of confidence, being exposed to different charity works and I believe if you do good to other people then you will blessed.”

A Libra (Oct. 15, 1997), Adelyn stands 5’1”, weights 92 lbs.; wears small-size shirt and size-7 shoes. Vital statistics: 34-24-36.

Would you rather be smart but not too beautiful, or beautiful but not too smart?

“Beauty can be enhanced and intelligence can be learned. But being naturally born extremely smart is an exemption. I would rather be smart but not too beautiful, because with intelligence comes beauty and wealth.”

Why are taking up business administration?

“Simply because I want to run my own business someday. Growing up away from our father is not easy, but we have to understand that he’s sacrificing he’s own happiness just to work abroad for us. And I don’t want my future children to experience the same. I believe that by running my own business, there is no need for me nor my husband to leave away just to work for money. Thus, I am near with my family and can have more time for them.”

How can you convince people that education is our key to success?

“Education is the key to success because without that, you will get nowhere in life, you may only get so far but in the end, you'll go nowhere. People succeed with not saying that you need to have a high education. Instead, you have to always go far and never fall back for you to keep striving for the best. Giving up, dropping out or quitting will leave a person with no success later on down the line, stuff may get hard but one of the ways through life is education! So strive and never give up! Knowledge is power. And knowledge can only be achieved through proper education.”

What do you think is the smartest thing you’ve done so far?

“It is taking time to think before I decide on things because I believe that the decisions I make today will be my foundation for my future. Our future depends on how we live our present. We may make wrong decisions in life but what’s important there is that we learn something from that mistake which can let us grow as a person.”

“What do you think is biggest decision that you’ve made in your life?” 

“Choosing between holding on or letting go. That is why I always take time to think before I make decisions because I know that “in every action there is reaction”. In life, we cannot have everything we want at the same time. We must be able to choose what really matters most.”

Have you always wanted to be a beauty queen since you were small? 

“No. I always wanted to be a successful business woman ever since I was a child. I never imagined myself being a beauty queen. But as I grew up, I learned the importance of beauty pageants in our society and how it influenced other people. And I was curious about how it feels like to be a beauty queen. So I gave it a try and it turned out great.”

What are you’re winning traits?

“God-loving, extra miler, self-discipline, and being true to yourself and others. I always put God first in everything I do. God has better plans for us than we have for ourselves, so never doubt Him. I believe that being an extra miler means breaking boundaries and pushing through limitations. If you learn to face your fears and step out of your comfort zone, then you can be able to learn lot of things and uncover hidden potentials within you. Being an extra miler makes you grow as a person. Self-discipline. You must be able to learn how to discipline yourself because in pageantry, all your actions and words will influence other people. You must be able to set as a good role model/example to everyone. If you want to spread positivity to the world then influence them with positivity within you. Being true to yourself and others. Be that “true-to-herself’ person in this world full of “i-wanna-be-like-her” persons. Because being you is your edge over others, that’s what makes you unique.”

Aside from winning the Miss UB Personality 2016, what do you think have you achieved so far?

“I learned how to believe in myself and boost my confidence that enables me to face my weaknesses and develop my strengths.” (Adelyn was Mutya ng Pilar 2014 3^rd runner-up.-LPU)

 You are an OMG (Mikey  Gatal) model who is exposed to charity works. And maybe you have an important message to share… and Miss UB would be the venue or forum to start your advocacies. “I always wanted to serve and help other people, and I’m always thankful to my OMG family for helping me achieve it. As a youth and reigning Miss UB Personality 2016, I wanted to promote my advocacy which is to empower other people especially the youths to join in any life-changing and inspiring activities in order to change their negative perspective in life.”

So, you believe that the youth is the hope of the fatherland?

“I always believe that "youths of today are the leaders of tomorrow" that is why I strongly disagree with the abolition of Sangguniang Kabataan election of our country today. SK will serve as a training ground for our youth to develop their skills and unlock their hidden potentials. If I Will not encourage them now, then who would be? And wouldn't it be too late? We have to train them now in order to make them a responsible leader in the future.”

In the Duterte administration, do you believe has change truly come?

“Yes. We are all the living witnesses of it. But true change can never be achieved if we do not know how to discipline ourselves. If we want change, it must start from within.”

When did you realized that you are Miss UB Personality, the oldest campus pageant in the province? During the coronation night? Or morning after that? 

“Until now I still can't believe that I brought home the crown. “

           

 Do you have secrets sustaining your poise, under pressure, especially the crucial point in any contest?

“Presence of mind and positive thinking. There is no room for shyness on stage. You gotta show them what you've got, but don’t forget to enjoy!”

Who’s you’re beauty queen role model?

“Ate Imaculada Cleofe Leopardas (also a beauty queen and a fellow OMG model).  I admire her down to earth attitude despite all her success and achievements in life.”

Any other woman whom you admire?

“My mother. Because she is a personification of true beauty inside out.  She's exactly what I wanna be in the future. She's  a blessing not only to me, but also to everyone who knew her.” 

Do you have a boyfriend?

“Yes!”

So, how’s your boyfriend now that you’re Miss UB?

“He’s happy and proud of my achievements.”

If you were to choose between your boyfriend and Miss UB title, which would you choose?

“I believe I can handle being  Miss UB and  having a boyfriend at the same time.”

What is the essence of being Miss UB Personality?

“Pageant is a celebration of beauty that God has given into us. It is a way of acknowledging and showcasing the potentials and skills we have within. It is also an effective way to campaign social awareness to different social issues and problems we are facing right now, because the answers of the candidates can be use as a piece of advice to the concerned public.”

Boholano nursing topnotchers share secrets of success

Scene: The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has warned that the coastal areas of Dauis in Panglao Island in Bohol province was found positive for red tide, making shellfish in the said area unsafe for consumption. Leo Bongalos, officer-in-charge of BFAR-Bohol said that there is no timetable yet on when the BFAR will lift this ban.

Prayers and hardwork paved the way for three Boholano nursing graduates to land in the 10 topnotchers of the May 2015 nursing licensure examination. Thus, a good year for Bohol's nursing schools. 

Euben Hope Olaso Gamutan, Krissa Mae Duco Lapiz and Christine Joy Camilotes Roferos went to different schools, prayed in different churches and reviewed in different styles but there’s one common denominator---topnotchers! Gamutan finished fifth place with a rating of 85 percent, Lapiz was ranked sixth place with a rating of 84.8 percent and Roferos landed on the eighth spot with a rating of 84.4 percent.

In everything we do, we should trust  God and 

acknowledge that without Him, we are nothing.'

They shared there is only one secret in preparing for the board exam.  

“Prayer. That is my best secret. I prayed for wisdom and for strength that I can endure all the sleepless nights,” Gamutan told VRS. “Of course, I also had to do my part in studying. I usually isolate myself when studying because that is where I can concentrate the most.”

“Prayer. I prayed a lot. When I had time I went to the Sto. Niño and I prayed not just to top but to pass including my classmates as well,” Roferos said.

Gamutan, Lapiz and Roferos were among the 9,707 aspirants who passed the May examination out of a total of 17,896 examinees, according to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). 

Gamutan obtained his nursing degree at University of Bohol (UB), Lapiz graduated from Holy Name University  (HNU) and Roferos got hers at Cebu Normal University (CNU). Roferos who hails from Loon town was the high school valedictorian of the University of Bohol - Loon Institute.

Studying strategically and prayers

Gamutan shared that he already prepared himself to pass the examination while still studying. “The best preparations I did were during my years as a nursing student. I strived to do my best in every single quiz and to make the most of my exposures in the hospital duties. Also, as early as one year before the exam, I already started reading books/reviewers, reviewing notes, and answering sample board questions.”

Roferos, who was inspired by her aunt who is also a nurse, said she just read textbooks. “I read my textbooks one at a time but with certain comprehension. I had enough rest and sleep. I usually sleep a lot. Just listening to random audiobooks, dili pada sa pressure. Just learn at your own pace.”

Gamutan found his trust in the Lord, which he said is his source of comfort.  He said he didn’t ask to become a topnotcher.

“Honestly, I never asked God that I would be a topnotcher. The only thing I repeatedly pray was that God will help me to do my best and that whatever the results will be, His name will be glorified,” he said.

He learned he had topped the exam from his friends and when he opened his Facebook account on Tuesday morning and saw messages of congratulations from friends. Since the information came from friends, he had reservations at first and waited for the news from the PRC.

“It feels unreal! Maybe because I really wasn’t expecting this. It’s amazing how God has blessed me this much. All I asked for was for me to do my best, and He gave me even more,” Gamutan said.

On Wednesday night, Gamutan wrote on Facebook: “The Lord has always been my source of everything! None of this would have been possible without HIM!! TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY!!!!!!!!Thank you everyone for all your prayers!”

He thanked his family- father Alexander, mother Reinalda Josephine, siblings Xela Reina and James Michael, and other relatives: “Primarily, it was my family. Everytime I felt pressured, they reminded me that all I had to do was to trust God to help me do my best. Our Dean, clinical instructors, and reviewers also inspired me to push myself to my full potentials. They encouraged me to aim high and believed in what I could achieve with God’s help.”

Roferos said she still couldn’t believe the results of the exam. She was at home when she received a text message from her best friend informing her that she topped the exam. “It was surreal, I wasn't expecting na ma-top jud. But I hoped though...”

She has reservations at first and waited for the official results from the PRC. “I mean, really? Topnotcher ko? Overwhelming kaayo.”

She thanked her aunt, her mother Zulueta, father Jaime (deceased), younger sister Charysse Jane and younger brother Christian James, relatives and friends for the support.

Lapiz’s Facebook status read: “Not because of who I am but because of what you've done. Not because of what I've done but because of who you are. It was all HIM. To God be the glory.”

Asked by VRS if they wanted to work abroad, Gamutan said: “I’d love to spend my first working experiences here in the Philippines. But if given the opportunity, I would also love to extend my service to other countries. Anywhere will do actually.”

“I haven't decided yet as to where I would want to work pa,” Roferos said.

Atty. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr., one of Bohol’s great educators, dies

Former DepEd-Western Visayas regional director and University of Bohol President Atty. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr.  died Friday, March 21, at St. Luke’s Hospital, according to his family and relatives. His sudden death has left many in the academe nearly too stunned to speak. They are mourning the loss of a great educator and leader.

As a lawyer and educator by profession, Atty. Tirol Jr. served as national president of the Philippine Public School Teacher, Employees Association (PPSTEA) and initiated the Magna Carta for Public Schools.

In July 2009, Atty. Tirol Jr. was awarded as one of The Outstanding Boholanos around the World (Tobaw) in the field of education. In his desire to open more avenues for educational advancement, he founded Cristal e College in Panglao, Information Computer Institute Bohol and Galeria, a computer school in Quezon City.

Atty. Tirol Jr. was a practicing lawyer with three Doctoral Degrees in Philosophy major in English, Education and Administration. He has also earned six masteral degrees. He also graduated Master of Arts in Theology, Doctor of Ministry and Doctor of Divinity. The Confederation of Evangelical Ministries Association of Bohol Inc. ordained him Evangelical Bishop.

Having known friends who are fighting the Big C, I can feel what US-based socialite Mikey Gatal and his family are going through when he shares about the condition of his sister, the 1983 Miss Young Bohol Marcel Gatal-Diego, who battles the Big C.

“Any journey down that road is not easy for a family,” says Mikey, holding back tears.

Marcel is suffering from breast cancer stage 3, the same one singer-songwriter Anastacia is a survivor of.

The American Cancer Society says, “Stage 3 breast cancer is more advanced than Stage 2, but it is not considered metastatic. For this diagnosis, cancer has not spread from the breast to organs or other distant sites in the body, but cancer cells will have traveled to nearby underarm (axillary) lymph nodes, or lodged in lymph nodes beneath your breastbone (sternum) or even under your collarbone.”

“She’s in high spirits,” adds Mikey, who will visit Marcel this summer.

VRS is requesting its readers to pray for Marcel’s speedy recovery. Remember, as poet Alfred Tennyson said, more things are wrought by prayers than this world dreams of. Prayer can move mountains.

My Ate Marcel Battles the Big C

I have been trying to keep this to myself but I realized that by sharing our pain, people would get to be more cognizant of breast cancer and how it affects and devastates the families of its victims

It was only last December 2013 when I visited Ate Marcel and her family in Manila that I found out about the Big C. The biopsy results confirmed what she had dreaded ever since she felt a lump in her chest. The diagnosis was breast cancer stage 3b.  

I remember going to the toilet right after we talked. It was there at that very private area where I tore up and really cried. After regaining my composure, I went back to the living room where Ate Marcel, Kuya

Tony and their kids were gathered.

I remember going out with the whole family and with younger brother Junjun for some bonding moments. It was supposed to be a happy occasion for Christmas was approaching and yet there was that dark cloud of gloom that hovered over us.

That was one sad Christmas reminiscent of the one that we had the year Papa Rogie passed away.

  

Yes, my dear Ate Marcel is facing the biggest battle of her life and we need the power of a Prayer Brigade as she continues her treatment regimens

Ate Marcel’s last visit to Bohol was only last January. She insisted in coming home to pay her last respects to our late uncle “Papa Rey Gatal” before he was to be buried last January 3. It was a heart-wrenching reunion for Ate Marcel and cousins Ate Roni and Manoy Rocky who practically grew up together since our respective houses in Gallares St. were right beside each other.

I couldn’t help but shed a tear when Ate Marcel was sobbing on Manoy Rocky’s shoulders. Manoy Rocky, then Tagbilaran City’s Kabataang Barangay Chairman was the one who insisted that Ate Marcel accept the offer to represent the city in the 1983 Miss Young Bohol Pageant. She followed his advice and the rest is history.

Cancer is such a treacherous disease. Once it latches onto the cancer patient’s system, it is irreversible unless there is medical intervention. The malignant tumour results from the abnormal and uncontrolled division of affected cells

Right now Ate Marcel has lost her hair as a result of her ongoing chemotherapy. Ate Marcel has always been a survivor and been a veteran of life’s battles and wars. She has always been a strong, opinionated and determined woman who never been known to back out from trials and challenges.

But Ate Marcel can never do this alone. Let’s rally behind her as she faces the biggest battle of her life. Give her some words of encouragement and please offer a prayer for her

Making this public has been a very difficult decision for us. We could just keep quiet about this but it would be unfair for family, friends and classmates.

We want to share this so that everyone would realize that cancer is very real and can happen to anyone including your loved ones.   

(Note: The American Cancer Society (ACS) stresses the importance of finding breast cancer early.  The goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms.

“Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year,” says ACS’ website. If you have sore, red and itchy nipples, upper back pain, a change in nipple appearance or size, change in breast size and pain, lumps or swelling in the armpits, it is advisable that you contact a doctor as early as possible.)

Shamcey Supsup: It’s more fun in Bohol!

As I said, I liked the way Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Gurrea Supsup delivered her message during the 142nd commencement exercises of the University of Bohol. She said it with so much fervor that nobody could say she didn’t say it from the heart.

Having the Miss Universe beauty and board topnotcher as speaker was a history in the making. It was Shamcey’s first time to speak in a graduation ceremony. Everyone who attended the event was inspired. And a big thanks to UB Registrar Leah Tirol-Magno, the graduation chair, for making it happened.

 

Before that Shamcey did a “whirlwind” countryside tour. Wearing a sundress, Shamcey flashed her winning smile to her Boholano fans, who either shrieked in admiration or were too dumbfounded to say anything. She’s really beautiful. She’s mobbed by fans wherever she went.

 

“It’s my second time here in Bohol. Matagal ko nang gustong pumunta. I didn’t have the time. Yung first time ko dito sa Bohol, hindi ako nakapagtour, so ngayon ko lang nakita ang Bohol. Mas maganda dito,” Shamcey told Bared.

 

Shamcey visited Loboc River, the river of joy. She was welcomed by Tessie Labunog-Sumampong of Loboc Riverwatch.  “This is better than river cruising in Bangkok, Thailand,” she quipped.

 

At the world famous Chocolate Hills in Carmen, Shamcey climbed the 214 concrete steps to reach the highest hill. She said that viewing the chocolate hills is a never-ending amazement. The guides (composed of Angeli Uy of Lab Tours and Travels, Melanie Tirol, Desiree Roxas, Liza Macalandag, Elcid Tirol, Charlito Andam and Gyn Mark Cajote) and Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. coordinator Ms. Liliana Soriano joined her watching the grandeur of the thousand hills—so beautifully formed in the central part of Bohol.

 

And a visit to the tarsier sanctuary in Corella town allowed Shamcey to see the natural habitat of the tarsier with ‘tarsierman’ Lito Pizarras as guide.

Anyway, to give everyone a chance to reminisce Shamcey’s graduation message (not only for UB graduates but for all the graduates there), here’s a copy of her message. Read on.

 

Good afternoon to all of you. First of all, thank you for inviting me to grace this most meaningful occasion.

 

Many people have asked me if I have change since April 10 when I won the Binibining Pilipinas that eventually brought me to the road to Sau Paulo  Brazil for the Miss Universe Pageant. Yes and no. I have changed in ways that amaze even myself. From someone who didn’t know the first thing about wearing high heels, putting on makeup or fixing my hair, I transformed into someone who could enhance whatever  God-given countenance I was given. From a person who was very shy, I learned how to speak to large audiences and flash my brightest  smile. And from  someone who was always within the comfort  zone of family  and friends, I learned how to interact with people from all walks of life.

 

Yes, I have change. But then again, I haven’t.

 

Last year, I was veritable probinsiyana. I grew up in my parents’ farm in GenSan. I rode “carabaos” and ran around the farm. There is simplicity and tranquility in my GenSan life that I miss. It is simplicity that makes up my core. In truth, even if a lot of me have changed, I am still very much a probinsyana at heart.     

 

Today, there are 725 of you who are probinsyanos and probinsyanas at heart who will graduate. Your parents have toiled hard to get you where you are. Some of you will venture to go out to the city, even out to the world. Some of you will opt to stay in Bohol. But all of you will pursue your dreams.

 

In pursuing your dreams, I urge to continue being a probinsyano. Dream big, but live simply. Learn to recognize the real and important from the mere trappings of glory. In my reign as Ms. Universe Philippines, I got caught in the whirlwind of several social and high profile activities. While I recognize the significance of each activity, somehow, it was in the low profile and simple activities where I found real joy.

 

Don’t get me wrong. Being simple does not mean being second best. It simply means discerning and being focused on the things that matter most. In your own simple ways, aim to be first, the best .The founders of your esteemed university did just that. Your school was the first university in the province. It is the home of several alumni whose names are synonymous with excellence. When I decided to give in to my mother’s wish for me to become a beauty queen, I took everything to heart. I took everything

seriously. I studied the moves, perfected my walk, and honed myself so I could bring honor to my country. At first, it was just an obedient daughter following her mom’s wishes .But as the competition progressed, I knew that I should push myself to be the best I could. Eventually, it boiled down to how I could be the best for my country.

 

From simple goals and the pursuit of excellence, I implore you young graduates to conquer the whole new worlds that lay on your feet not only with youthful fervor, but also with integrity. It is not enough that you reach your dreams. It is not enough that you be the best. It is most important if you do everything with dignity and respect. Never compromise your values and ideals. Never give up the beliefs that make you who you are in exchange for favors and rewards that are just material and transitory. This is exactly what was in my mind, when in a heartbeat ,I answered the question posed to  me during  the Miss  Universe pageant .Some say that I should  have stretched my answer to make it sound  more diplomatic. Some say that I should have asked for an interpreter. For me, however, the answer was so clear that I did not need a translator to say what was in my heart. There simply was no gray area in need of “stretching”. These are the values that were ingrained in me by my parents that are not negotiable at all.

 

Finally, I enjoin you to pay it forward. A lot of you will reach great heights in their endeavors. But always look back and pay it forward. There is a reason why you have been showered this blessing of education. Find a way for these blessings to multiply a hundred fold by giving back –to your family, to school, to province, to your country, and most of all to God. Paying it forward is the best way to show your gratitude. It is gratitude that manifests and multiplies itself in generosity.

 

Be simple. Be excellent. Be honest. Be generous in your gratitude. Be all these and you will be the best graduates of University of Bohol.

Music is life ask Malou

FLASH REPORT: Shamcey Supsup chosen as graduation speaker

Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Gurrea Supsup will share her thoughts on life and success with this year’s graduating class at the 142nd commencement ceremony on March 27, 4 p.m. at the UB quadrangle, the Office of the University Registrar announced last week.

Shamcey Supsup graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines and topnotcher in the June 2010 Architect Licensure Exam.

“When we choose a speaker, we think of who is right for the time,” UB Registrar Leah Tirol-Magno said. “We choose Miss Shamcey Supsup because aside from her outstanding academic achievements and Miss Universe beauty, she is proud to be a Christian.”

Those lines from the song You and Me against the World by Helen Reddy take on a deeper meaning vis-a-vis Maria Lourdes “Malou” Brunidor Cempron's life.  “This song is dedicated to my unica hija. It tells about strength. My daughter and I both held on together at the time her father left us for somebody.”

Malou’s winning piece, “Paano Kita Mapapasalamatan” by Kuh Ledesma, won her first place in Ang Bagong Kampeon (The New Champion) in 1984. It was a national amateur singing contest aired on RPN (now Solar TV) hosted by the late Bert “Tawa” Marcelo and Pilita Corrales.

Her inclusion in the national singing tilt was a blessing in disguise. Malou went to Manila to sing in the wedding of Balilihan Vice Mayor Efren and Nikki Chatto. Just when Malou was ready to go back to Bohol, the late assemblyman Eladio "Kiking" Chatto, convinced her to try out for Bagong Kampeon. Bohol’s First Lady Pureza Veloso-Chatto accompanied her to Broadcast City Channel 9.  Aspiring singers from the country filled the place, all hoping for a guaranteed audition in the televised Bagong Kampeon tryout.  Out of 75 auditioneers only 5 passed and she was one of the lucky 5.

Music lovers said that Malou’s entry to the contest was unfavorable. It was a nice performance but the timing’s wrong because the defending champion had only one week to qualify for the grand finals. Ryan Cayabyab, one of the judges, called her after the contest and gave her an open date to join again without audition anymore. She claimed the first place Bagong Kampeon in 1984.

“Big deal di ba? Not anybody could be given that chance. I was lucky then to be offered. I won first place that week I joined the contest,” Malou recalled.

Malou really hasn't slowed down since taking home the Bagong Kampeon. On May 16, 1983, Malou’s rendition of “Dito Ba” won her 3^rd place in the 1st Bohol Minus One Singing tilt. She was the only female contestant to make it to the magic three among the 48 contestants around Bohol.  It was sponsored by the Silliman University Kadugong Bol-anon (headed by Niza Reselosa Bagares) and dyRD. It was hosted by Bohol’s Queen of All Media Ardy Araneta-Batoy and Kiss FM dj Nelson Jabonite. The jurors were topnotch musician Atty. Elpidio Biliran and Victoria Modequillo Chatto.

In 1984, Malou was declared champion in Bohol PRISAA Literary Musical Contest singing “Ako Ang Nagwagi, Ako Ang Nasawi” by Dulce.

In 1987 to 1989, she was hired to sing backup vocals for noted musician Tex Cimafranca in the many songs he composed for Manila artists.

Malou is also a sough-after judge in singing contests. Before Luke Mejares conquered Manila, Malou used to be one of the judges in the many contests he joined. It was also Malou who advised Star in a Million grand champion Jerome Sala to sing One in a Million when he was joining amateur contests in Bohol.

Music is life. Ask Malou.

“Music is like second skin to me,” said Malou. “My life would be empty without it.”

As a child, Malou aspired to be a singer. She possesses a soprano vocal range and has been referred to as "the little girl with a sparkling voice" and a blue eyed soul singer. After winning in a national contest, Malou received offers but she didn’t let herself be affected by the klieg lights and cameras rolling and she remained as humble as ever.

Malou is busy working as election assistant II at the Provincial COMELEC for 20 years, and yet she still finds time to sing.

I hate people who are… insincere and discourteous.

I avoid people who are not…respectful especially to elders or 
persons in authority.

My greatest pleasure is…when I won first place in the Bagong Kampeon singing competition in Manila which was hosted 
by no less than Ms. Pilita Corrales and with Mr. Ryan Cayabyab as chairman of the board of judges.

My worst moment…was the time I got real sick in 2009.

My biggest fear… my biggest fear is to lose my singing voice.

The most important person in my life is… my daughter is the most impt person in my whole life.

If I were to be reincarnated as an animal I would be… a bird because birds fly freely.

My most traumatic experience was… when my daughter was diagnosed of idiopathic seizure disorder while in high school.

I deal with gossip by… dedma na lng. Gossips don’t bother me at all.

The one thing I can’t live without is… my mobile phone. It’s my only way to get in touch with anybody anytime of the day.

Am I afraid of growing old?... I am definitely not afraid of growing old in fact I’m excited to grow old with my loved ones.

The type of guys that turns me on… I go for the musically inclined, smart and God-fearing dudes.

The type of guys that turn me off… .. intimidating ones are a no-no to me absolutely.

My philosophy in life is… no guts no glory!

I lose my temper when… I lose my temper in people who can’t follow instructions very well.

If I were somebody else I’d be… Mother Teresa, a very gentle woman who has a big heart that bleeds for the poor.

I am happiest when… I when all of my loved ones are in the pink of health especially my unica hija.

I’m saddest when… I’ve hurt anybody .

My ultimate goal in life is… to witness the graduation of my daughter.

Last thing that I do before I go to sleep?. . To say my prayers is always the last thing I do before I sleep.

First thing I do after  I wake up? I pray to thank the Lord for giving me another day in my life.

How do you cope with stress? stress? I lift it up to HIM up above who gives me strength .

My favorite hideaway is… my bedroom at home is my paradise it’s where I listen to music .

My love life is… Secret hmmm.

Do I prefer a younger man, somebody my age or somebody older? Well, my answer is a big BOTH.
