Shamcey Supsup: It’s more fun in Bohol!

As I said, I liked the way Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Gurrea Supsup delivered her message during the 142nd commencement exercises of the University of Bohol. She said it with so much fervor that nobody could say she didn’t say it from the heart.

Having the Miss Universe beauty and board topnotcher as speaker was a history in the making. It was Shamcey’s first time to speak in a graduation ceremony. Everyone who attended the event was inspired. And a big thanks to UB Registrar Leah Tirol-Magno, the graduation chair, for making it happened.

Before that Shamcey did a “whirlwind” countryside tour. Wearing a sundress, Shamcey flashed her winning smile to her Boholano fans, who either shrieked in admiration or were too dumbfounded to say anything. She’s really beautiful. She’s mobbed by fans wherever she went.

“It’s my second time here in Bohol. Matagal ko nang gustong pumunta. I didn’t have the time. Yung first time ko dito sa Bohol, hindi ako nakapagtour, so ngayon ko lang nakita ang Bohol. Mas maganda dito,” Shamcey told Bared.

Shamcey visited Loboc River, the river of joy. She was welcomed by Tessie Labunog-Sumampong of Loboc Riverwatch.  “This is better than river cruising in Bangkok, Thailand,” she quipped.

At the world famous Chocolate Hills in Carmen, Shamcey climbed the 214 concrete steps to reach the highest hill. She said that viewing the chocolate hills is a never-ending amazement. The guides (composed of Angeli Uy of Lab Tours and Travels, Melanie Tirol, Desiree Roxas, Liza Macalandag, Elcid Tirol, Charlito Andam and Gyn Mark Cajote) and Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. coordinator Ms. Liliana Soriano joined her watching the grandeur of the thousand hills—so beautifully formed in the central part of Bohol.

And a visit to the tarsier sanctuary in Corella town allowed Shamcey to see the natural habitat of the tarsier with ‘tarsierman’ Lito Pizarras as guide.

“Sana mapreserve ang natural beauty ng Bohol. Once na nasira yun mahirap na ibalik. It’s more fun in Bohol,” Shamcey said.

Anyway, to give everyone a chance to reminisce Shamcey’s graduation message (not only for UB graduates but for all the graduates there), here’s a copy of her message. Read on.

Good afternoon to all of you. First of all, thank you for inviting me to grace this most meaningful occasion.

Many people have asked me if I have change since April 10 when I won the Binibining Pilipinas that eventually brought me to the road to Sau Paulo  Brazil for the Miss Universe Pageant. Yes and no. I have changed in ways that amaze even myself. From someone who didn’t know the first thing about wearing high heels, putting on makeup or fixing my hair, I transformed into someone who could enhance whatever  God-given countenance I was given. From a person who was very shy, I learned how to speak to large audiences and flash my brightest  smile. And from  someone who was always within the comfort  zone of family  and friends, I learned how to interact with people from all walks of life.

Yes, I have change. But then again, I haven’t.

Last year, I was veritable probinsiyana. I grew up in my parents’ farm in GenSan. I rode “carabaos” and ran around the farm. There is simplicity and tranquility in my GenSan life that I miss. It is simplicity that makes up my core. In truth, even if a lot of me have changed, I am still very much a probinsyana at heart.

Today, there are 725 of you who are probinsyanos and probinsyanas at heart who will graduate. Your parents have toiled hard to get you where you are. Some of you will venture to go out to the city, even out to the world. Some of you will opt to stay in Bohol. But all of you will pursue your dreams.

In pursuing your dreams, I urge to continue being a probinsyano. Dream big, but live simply. Learn to recognize the real and important from the mere trappings of glory. In my reign as Ms. Universe Philippines, I got caught in the whirlwind of several social and high profile activities. While I recognize the significance of each activity, somehow, it was in the low profile and simple activities where I found real joy.

Don’t get me wrong. Being simple does not mean being second best. It simply means discerning and being focused on the things that matter most. In your own simple ways, aim to be first, the best .The founders of your esteemed university did just that. Your school was the first university in the province. It is the home of several alumni whose names are synonymous with excellence. When I decided to give in to my mother’s wish for me to become a beauty queen, I took everything to heart. I took everything
seriously. I studied the moves, perfected my walk, and honed myself so I could bring honor to my country. At first, it was just an obedient daughter following her mom’s wishes .But as the competition progressed, I knew that I should push myself to be the best I could. Eventually, it boiled down to how I could be the best for my country.

From simple goals and the pursuit of excellence, I implore you young graduates to conquer the whole new worlds that lay on your feet not only with youthful fervor, but also with integrity. It is not enough that you reach your dreams. It is not enough that you be the best. It is most important if you do everything with dignity and respect. Never compromise your values and ideals. Never give up the beliefs that make you who you are in exchange for favors and rewards that are just material and transitory. This is exactly what was in my mind, when in a heartbeat ,I answered the question posed to  me during  the Miss  Universe pageant .Some say that I should  have stretched my answer to make it sound  more diplomatic. Some say that I should have asked for an interpreter. For me, however, the answer was so clear that I did not need a translator to say what was in my heart. There simply was no gray area in need of “stretching”. These are the values that were ingrained in me by my parents that are not negotiable at all.

Finally, I enjoin you to pay it forward. A lot of you will reach great heights in their endeavors. But always look back and pay it forward. There is a reason why you have been showered this blessing of education. Find a way for these blessings to multiply a hundred fold by giving back –to your family, to school, to province, to your country, and most of all to God. Paying it forward is the best way to show your gratitude. It is gratitude that manifests and multiplies itself in generosity.

Be simple. Be excellent. Be honest. Be generous in your gratitude. Be all these and you will be the best graduates of University of Bohol.

Thank you very much and congratulations to all.

Miss U fever and other tidbits

Wake-uppers:
Hours after Philippine bet Shamcey Supsup was named as the 3rd runner-up at the Miss Universe 2011 pageant, jokes spread like wildfire online. Joke! Joke! Joke!

Aling Dionesia Pacquiao with Ms. Navarette
Joke 1:  (At the Miss Universe pageant back stage..)
Ms.CHINA: Congratulations Angola!
Ms.ANGOLA: Thanks China, you like my crown?
Ms.CHINA: Yes of course, go check what's written on it..
(Then Angola takes off her crown and read the little words on the back.)
Engraved on the crown: "MADE IN CHINA."

Joke 2: This alleged statement was aired via NBC News: “I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.”  But sorry to burst your bubble, the highly influential celebrity did not actually say that. Answering a query on the alleged statement, a moderator on Oprah's official website Oprah.com said Oprah has not issued "any comments of this nature." OWNModerator13 responded: "There is no truth to the statement. Ms. Winfrey has not made any comments of this nature. Thank you for asking."

Joke 3: According to a very reliable source the main reason why Ms. Philippines Shamcey Supsup's failure to win Miss Universe pageant was her inconclusive response to the Q n A part of the pageant. It had nothing to do with her religious belief but because she does not want to marry the son of the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto. Who on earth wants to be called Mrs. Shamcey Supsup-Bhutto.

Joke 4: Lea Salonga gave high scores to Miss Angola because their family names sound the same: Angola-Salonga.

Joke 5: The photoshopped photo of Aling Dionesia Pacquiao being crowned as Miss U winner (with Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarette) is widely circulated all over the internet. No, Mommy D didn’t win the Miss U!

Everyone is still in frenzy over the recently concluded Miss Universe 2011 pageant in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The country's bet — Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup — was the third runner-up.

A Penelope Cruz look-alike, Shamcey ranked a place higher than Venus Raj, who was fourth runner-up in the 2010 pageant. Shamcey is the fourth Filipina declared third-runner-up in the Miss U: Lalaine Benette (1963), Chat Silayan (1980) and Desiree Verdadero (1984).

Leila Lopes of Angola, the first titleholder from her country, was crowned the 60th Miss Universe.
Aside from Shamcey, the others who are part of Lopes' entourage are: Miss Ukraine Olesya Stefanko (1st runner-up); Miss Brazil Priscila Machado (2nd runner-up); and Miss China Luo Zilin (4th runner-up).

Some Filipino fans have expressed disappointment over her non-title win, despite a good standing throughout the pageant.

According to Bohol’s seasoned host and personality guru Raul Gatal “the Philippines already lost five Miss Universe crowns because of the q&A courtesy of Chiqui Brosas (1975), Desiree Verdadero (1984) Miriam Quiambao (1999) Venus Raj (2010) and Shamcey Supsup (2011).”

“Shamcey's case was the biggest blow, she aced the question but lost,” said Raul.  However, Bb. Pilipinas-World 2006 Anna Maris Igpit said that “it's not all about the q&a , it's the overall performance.”

But I agree with Raul when he said that for Shamcey to have finished third runner-up was good enough. She made us proud!

“Shamcey did everything right but Angola outshone her because she had that sweetness, sincerity and showed a hint of vulnerability those endearing herself to the judges and to the crowd,” said Raul. “Becoming Miss Universe doesn’t mean you’re the most beautiful or the smartest...it's a matter of luck, timing and destiny. It was written in the stars that Miss Angola would become miss universe,” added Raul.
Farrah Faye Mian: ‘Even if I were in her place, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the whole world of my principles and beliefs in such a way that would make me give up my love.’

Anna Maris Igpit: ‘I honestly feel that Shamcey deserves a higher rank.’

Anyway, Bared asked Anna Maris and Miss Bohol Sandugo 2011 Farrah Faye Mian what they could say and how they would answer the same “tricky” question.

What is your reaction of the Miss U 2011?

Maris: This year's pageant is actually new for me because I was used to the opening number with the candidates dancing and the intro with their national costume, if not, recorded. But I love the pacing, very quick as usual. The dresses (opening) and swimsuits were gorgeous!

Farrah: I think Shamcey did a great job! I know that most people don't really appreciate nor recognize the fact that she was only the 3rd runner up but I think it’s one of the greatest feats she will ever earn for this country. Imagine, among all the countries in the world, our country's representative was chosen among the top5 and that wasnt an easy journey for her. I think all of us should just congratulate and be happy for her after all, she brought fame and glory to our beloved motherland.

Do you think Shamcey deserves 3rd runner-up or higher than 3rd runner-up?

Maris: I honestly feel that Shamcey deserves a higher rank. The least for her should be the 1st runner-up. Her over-all performance was really good. I was shocked when she was called as 3rd runner up because I was already expecting Angola and Shamcey as the last two standing.

Farrah: I think she should have won because she really showed what a Miss Universe should embody: that is strength, beauty, grace and most of all, conviction. Even if I were in her place, I wouldn’t have been able to tell the whole world of my principles and beliefs in such a way that would make me give up my love. She is a woman of substance, intelligence and beauty and I think she deserved the crown more than anyone else.

Was it the question that Shamcey lost to Angola/Ukraine?

Maris: I don’t think it was the q&a round that cost her the crown. In fact, she gave a very strong and straight to the point answer. I’m not really a fan of Shamcey's walk. But I think it worked for her. I believe it was the judge's call already.

Farrah: I don't think it was the question. In fact, I am still confused as to why she only got the 3rd spot when she was the only one who spoke for herself without the aid of an interpreter.

What will be your answer of the question "Would you change your religious beliefs for the one you love?"

Maris:  No, religion should not get in the way when it comes to love. If a guy truly loves me, he will embrace our differences and respect what I believe in. Because after all true love encompasses everything including religion, which I believe can’t be taken away from you in life and even after.

Farrah: I don't think I'll ever change my religious beliefs for the one I love because if he loves me back as much as I love him, then he'll understand. My beliefs are one of the things that made me who I am, one of the things that made him love me, and if I were to change it then I wouldn't be the same person. Most of all, God's love is greater than any earthly romance we find and I’m sure that if he really loves me, then we'll find a way to make it work without compromising both sides.

Thanks Ima Castro
Miss Saigon and recording star Ima Castro with the sisters and working force of the Holy Spirit School-Tagbilaran...
...and visiting the tarsier (and other attractions) in her countryside tour.
At her concert last Tuesday night, the Miss Saigon and recording star Ima Castro gave her best that the audience, composed mostly of nuns, teachers, students and alumni of Holy Spirit School Tagbilaran, once again thrilled to the Ima Castro songs. Good show, Ima Castro!  Anyway, here is a letter from David Crankshaw, who’s responsible of bringing Ima to Bohol, says it all:

In between performing in the show, “In The Heights” in Makati and other shows around Manila, Ms. Ima Castro came to Bohol for a concert organized by Holy Spirit School of Tagbilaran.

Ima’s first visit to Bohol was on Sept. 12. Ima, Mollinder Cadiz (pianist), Ellawyn Cruz (road manager) and members of the organizing committee from school departed on a short sightseeing tour. Ima was amazed by the beauty of the Loboc River, Chocolate Hills and the amount and age of the churches in the area, and she fell in love with our own local celebrities, the tarsier.
On Sept. 13, Irma visited Holy Spirit School to watch the Intramurals dance performances then she treated the students and faculty to Whitney Houston’s “I’m every woman.”

“An evening of fine music” began with front acts of music and dance by grade and high school students and Ms Jennifer Ann Talisic (Jats) HSS Alumni. Ima came on stage around 8pm and performed various pop and musical songs from artists like Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand and Sharon Cuneta. Followed by  her very own “Shine” and other OPM songs. During the short interval the audience was entertained by pianist, Mollinder Cadiz.
The second half of the included many songs from the shows including, “I Dreamed a Dream” (Les Miserables) “It Won’t Be Long Now” (In the Heights), “Easy as Life” ( Aida) and “I’d Give My Life for You” (Miss Saigon). HSS Alumni Jennifer Ann Talisic (Jats) then joined Ima on staged to sing (unrehearsed) “Tell him” by Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion.
The last song and the encore were “Listen” and “And I’m Telling You” from the musical “DreamGirls.” After a standing ovation Ima spent nearly an hour talking and having photo’s taken with the SSPS sisters from school and anyone else that requested.

We were all treated to an evening of powerful and emotional music, performed by an amazing, yet humble artist, Ms. Ima Castro.

Bohol Hot Rods show held

A Hot Rod in urban slang is any vehicle that had been modified to improve its appearance or performance and often times both.

Bohol’s First Car and Motor Show was held last September 10 at Island City Mall Carpark. It was presented by Island City Mall, Auto Kraft Works, Shiang Ma Nou and Disco Records Center. Organized by CentralSense Production, it featured Bohol’s best cars including Mr. Hans Schoof’s Mercedes Benz SLS 2012, Poch Lamug’s Audi TT, BMW Z3’s, Mercedes Benz ML, Subaru WRX STI, Nissan 350z, fully set-up Ford F150, customized Honda cars and more.

Boholano motorcycle enthusiasts also graced the event by participating in the Slow Drag race, Burn-Out and Pimp my Bike competition, as judged by Blake Go, Philippine’s Drag Racing champion.

The visitors and on lookers had a great time with the competition photo ops with the models from Cebu and the featured cars during the event. Supportive car companies also united during the event, displaying their featured cars.  The whole time, the crowd was entertained by Bohol’s bands and Cebu’s DJ SEEK.

“The success of the event will hopefully inspire even more Boholanos to join and raise the level of car and motorcycle modification to a much higher level,” said Karla Tirol Magno, one of the organizers.

Shamcey Supsup places 4th in Miss Universe pageant

FILE PHOTO FROM AFP/ Miss Universe Organization / Patrick PRATHER

Question: Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love? Why or why not?

Answer: If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person that I love is God who created me and I have my faith and my principles and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God too.

Here's an article courtesy of the Manila Bulletin:

It's Miss Angola, but Supsup shines
September 13, 2011, 10:20am

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP/Reuters) — Leila Lopes, a business student from Angola, was crowned Miss Universe 2011 on Monday night (Tuesday in Manila) after dazzling the panel of judges with her beauty and brains.

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup made a splendid account of herself in the beauty contest, joined by 89 countries, as she shared the lights and the stage as the pageant’s third runner-up.

Lopes, Angola’s first winner, won the title during the 60th anniversary of the world’s biggest beauty pageant by smoothly handling an interview question about what physical trait she would change if she could.

“Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lopes said when asked her interview question by judge and Broadway star Lea Salonga. “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”

Lopes was crowned wearing a strapless cream-colored gown. She replaces last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.

The first runner-up was 23-year-old Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine, the second runner-up was Priscila Machado of Brazil, and the fourth runner-up was Miss China.

It was the first time that the Philippines won back-to-back in the Miss Universe pageant in the major category.

Last year, Miss Philippines Universe Maria Venus Raj won 4th runner-up in the pageant held in Las Vegas Nevada. This ended an 11-year drought for the Philippines in the beauty contest.

During the question-and-answer portion, actress/producer Vivica Fox asked Supsup: “Would you change your religious beliefs to the person you love and why?’’

Supsup answered: “If I have to change my religious belief, I will not marry the person I love because the first person that I love is God and He created me. And I have my faith, my principles and it what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God.’’

Like Miss Angola, Supsup also received warm reception from the audience for her answer.

The Philippine bet scored high among fans in the swimsuit and evening gown categories. In both categories, Supsup was ranked No. 2.

Supsup’s father, Mr. Timoteo Supsup, said he was not that surprised that his daughter won third runner-up in the pageant since she had the beauty and the brains to make it.

“I was so nervous, but happy when my daughter’s name was announced as the 3rd runner up and even when she was in the top 10 and 5. I believed she’d go home with a crown,” he said in Filipino.

A farmer in General Santos City, Mr. Supsup said he raised his only child with a strong belief and faith in God so he was not surprised with the way she answered in the interview portion of the contest.

As a message to his daughter, Mr. Supsup said: “Thank you for doing your best and giving pride to our country. I’m so proud of you.”

“The Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. would like to extend its heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Shamcey Supsup who placed third runner up in the recently concluded Miss Universe 2011 pageant. Her dazzling performance and excellent answer, besting more than 80 of the world’s loveliest women, clearly showed the innate beauty, values and intelligence of the Filipina. Indeed, Shamcey’s remarkable finish is a source of honor for Filipinos the world over,’’ said a Tessa Mangahas, Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager of Araneta Center, Inc.

This year, the pageant slightly introduced a different format, which included the Top 16th slot in the semi-finals.

Contestants from 89 nations on six continents spent the past three weeks in Sao Paulo, trying to learn samba dance steps, visiting impoverished children and kicking a football around for cameras as the globe’s biggest beauty contest is held in Brazil for the first time.

Before the contest began, judges offered little insight into who they thought might win.

“I know my job and I’ll be tough, but fair,” said pageant judge and journalist Connie Chung. “You have to keep in mind that these women are not objects just to be looked at. They’re to be taken seriously. I want to choose somebody I take seriously and the world takes seriously, too.”

Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization, was hyped for the night.

“It’s our 60th anniversary, it’s a very big show,” she said. “We’re anticipating close to a billion viewers from around the world.”

In the Philippines, Malacañang was incredibly proud of Miss Supsup’s showing in the pageant despite losing the Miss Universe crown.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda hailed Supsup doing the country proud, saying she still emerged victorious in the eyes of Filipinos.

“On behalf of the Filipino people, we are proud of you; and we see even greater things ahead for you,” Lacierda said.

“The humility, intellect, and grace that you exhibited during the competition embodied the spirit of the true Filipina; and, in our eyes, that is the true victory today — that the world stood witness to and found an appreciation for the ideals, values, and beauty that has long characterized our nation,” he added.

Lacierda said they hope the triumph of Supsup would convince other nations to “appreciate not just the beauty of our people, but that of our country.”

He said the President was actually impressed by Supsup’s educational background. Supsup graduated from University of the Philippines as magna cum laude with an architecture degree as well as topped the architecture licensure exams last year.

“He said he congratulates Ms. Supsup for her accomplishment today. She was indeed beauty and brains. That was his description of Ms. Supsup,” Lacierda said.

Lawmakers were equally elated, saying Supsup should be chosen by the Department of Tourism (DoT) as the country’s tourism “magnet,” along with other Filipino world-class icons.

“It would be beautiful if she could join the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Lea Salonga. She made us proud again,” said Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone, adding that they should be at the forefront of promoting the country abroad.

“I hope her victory will erase the negative image of the country brought about by Luneta tragedy,” he said.

Resolutions commending Supsup for performance in the international pageant were filed Tuesday at the House of Representatives.

You Against Corruption and Poverty (YACAP) party-list Rep. Carol Lopez echoed Evardone’s sentiments in filing House Resolution 1716 to commend Supsup, whom she described as an “accomplished Filipina.”

South Cotabato and General Santos City Rep. Pedro B. Acharon Jr. filed a similar resolution, said they are set to prepare a red carpet welcome for Supsup, who hails from his city.

“Preparations are underway to welcome her. We are very proud of her,” he said.

Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado-Revilla said she is also filing her resolution to extend her felicitation to Supsup.

But, Gabriela Rep. Luz Ilagan rejected the proposal of her colleagues in making Supsup as the country’s tourism poster girl.

“For tourism purposes, a beautiful woman should not be used to sell the beauty of our country. This is the old, macho way of promoting places. Our tourism spots can stand in their own without having a woman in a bikini promoting them,” she said.

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay also congratulated Supsup.

“Whatever it is, we’ll have to congratulate her. There were so many contestants and beautiful faces in the pageant,” Binay said. (With reports from Robert R. Requintina, Sheryl L.Miguel, Genalyn D. Kabiling, Charissa M. Luci, and JC Bello Ruiz)

'I'm so proud of you' — Shamcey Supsup's father
By SHERYL L. MIGUEL
September 13, 2011, 1:24pm

September 13, 2011, 1:24pm

MANILA, Philippines — After winning third runner-up in the 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup’s proud father, Mr. Timoteo Supsup, confessed that he was not that surprised that his daughter will win the pageant because he was confident enough that she has the beauty and brains of a real beauty queen.

“Sobrang ninerbiyos ako pero Masaya ako nung marinig ko na tinawag ang pangalan ng anak ko bilang third runner-up at kahit pa nung masali siya sa top 10 at 5. Pero malaki naman ang paniniwala ko na uuwi siya na may dalang korona. (I was so nervous but happy when they announced the name of my daughter as the third runner-up even when she was in the top 10 and 5. Though I believed that she will go home with a crown),” Mr. Supsup via ABS-CBN.

A farmer in General Santos, Mr. Supsup said he raised his only child with a strong belief and faith in God that is why he was not surprised with his daughter’s answer at the Question & Answer portion that she will not choose her love life over God.

He also imparts that Shamcey grew up with lots of experiences in joining and winning in beauty contests in General Santos City.

“Anak, thank you dahil ginawa mo ang lahat upang makapag-uwi ng karangalan sa ating bansa. Proud na proud ako sa’yo (Thank you for doing all your best for giving pride to our country. I’m so proud of you),” Mr. Supsup said.

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup took third runner-up in the 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant, behind the eventual title holder Miss Angola, first runner-up Miss Ukraine, and second runner-up Miss Brazil.
