The early detection of breast cancer relies greatly on awareness.

This is the reason why Island City Mall (ICM) continues to hold the Pink Run and Zumba Marathon every October in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer awareness is one of the many advocacies of ICM aimed at enabling spaces that care for the welfare of women.

Indeed, it was a sea of pink last October 23, 2022 when the ICM, in cooperation with the Bohol Provincial Health Office and the Tagbilaran City Health Office, conducted the event to continue spreading and disseminating information about breast cancer.

Women and men of all ages took the 3K, 5K, 10K, and 16K challenge.

Participating in a fun run also helps people get motivated, stay focused, and get more determined to push themselves to cross the finish line, while helping achieve the fundraising goal for a noble cause.

ICM Manager Mario Cirujales awarded the medals to the finishers who included Miss Tagbilaran 1987 Fiel Angeli Araoarao-Gabin and her daughter Cielo.

Fiel started as a breastfeeding advocate in January 14, 1997 when she gave birth to her daughter and this October, through a rather dramatic turn, has become a breast cancer awareness advocate together with Cielo on this very timely activity that focuses on one of the most critical health issues impacting women around the globe.

Very visible Alturas Group of Companies (AGC) functionaries during the event were Gay Ido–Bernaldez, Ritchel Mutia, and Armao Araoarao–Balo.

Mayor Jane Yap, the youngest elected and first woman mayor of the city government of Tagbilaran, who graced the activity, encouraged those present to give attention and inform women on the importance of regular self-breast examination and the critical role of screening for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, as it is the third leading cause of cancer deaths among Filipinos. She said there is a need to heighten awareness efforts for early detection and treatment to empower women to take charge of their health because most often, they care more for the health of their family members over their own wellbeing.

Also, it may be remembered that last October 9, ICM also sponsored the symposium with Dr. Julienne Deo Jabonillo as guest speaker and free clinic that provided consultation, blood sugar test, and cholesterol test for AGC and the general public. The event was also graced by social media influencer Dan Cahulogan.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month had its beginnings in 1985 with the partnership forged between the American Cancer Society and the Imperial Chemical Industries pharmaceutical division.

Former United States First Lady Betty Ford, as she was herself a breast cancer survivor, supported the launching of the week-long event. She was diagnosed when her husband, Gerald Ford, was president of the United States and brought even more attention to breast cancer.

Educating women about breast cancer and early detection tests so that they could take charge of their breast health was the early goal of the breast cancer awareness month.  It was in 1992 when the Estée Lauder cosmetics launched the first nation-wide campaign in the US that used the pink ribbon. They handed out an impressive 1.5 million pink ribbons that introduced the pink ribbon as the premier visual reminder of breast cancer awareness month.

Boholana beauty queen Marcelina Marcel Gatal-Diego, who was named Miss Young Bohol 1983, died Wednesday afternoon after a long bout with breast cancer.  She was 53.

“At around three o'clock today, All Souls’ Day, our eldest Ate Marcel Gatal- Diego lost her three year battle with breast cancer,” her younger brother Raul wrote on Facebook.

Her death was also confirmed by fellow beauty queen Fiel Angeli Araoarao-Gabin who expressed her shock and sadness at her death on social media.

“Another beautiful angel has gone to the Great Beyond,” said Fiel, who was Miss Tagbilaran 1987.

In 1982, Marcel represented the province of Bohol to the Hiyas ng Silangan-Philippines. She was adjudged Miss Talent and eventually chosen to be in the Top 10 finalists from among 30 candidates from all over the country. In 1983, she was crowned Miss Young Bohol, the precedent of Miss Bohol.

Her good command of the English language ushered her way to various opportunities, including having been a radio newscaster and a disk jockey of KISS 102.3 FM during her college days at the Divine Word College of Tagbilaran (DWC-T) now Holy Name University.

She was also actively involved in the JCI-Chocolate Hills and in the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP).

Marcel was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. In her battle, she had demonstrated extraordinary calm, faith and courage in her fight against cancer as she underwent chemotherapy. However, she opted to choose an alternative medication after chemotherapy killed her other organs.

“Chemo was not meant for her body,” VRS said.

And after a brief remission this year, Marcel did not lose weight, hair, voice and vision. However, she had difficulties in speaking because she developed another cancer--lung cancer.

Her death has left her families, friends and supporters in mourning.  Many of them have lost a part of their hearts.

Marcel’s younger brother Mikey who was about to blow his candle as he celebrated his birthday (Nov. 1 in the US) got a phone call from his sister Nikki.

“I  thought she (Nikki) would say a birthday greetings, but it gave me the sad news that our eldest sister joined our Papa Roger in heaven already and I put on a brave face and held on my tears not to cry on my birthday,” said Mikey.

“It's been difficult for all of us during this time of the year. I cried a river, knowing that three of my loved ones died of cancer, Hector, Kevin's mother and now my sister,” he added.

As news of Marcel’s death spread, so did the tributes.

“Rest in the Kingdom of the Lord Marcel: My student and queen,” said Bohol’s Queen of All Media Ardy Ines Batoy-Araneta on Facebook. It was Ardy who discovered and plucked Marcel from anonymity during her student days.

High school classmate Jocelyn Oppus, who is based in Los Angeles, called the news of Marcel’s death “desperately sad.”

“Rest in peace my classmate and volleyball mate...one of the ‘Carnation’ babies,” she said.

Note: Her remains will arrive from Manila for one final viewing on Wednesday, November 9 at the Funeraria Gomez-Udtohan on CPG Avenue, Tagbilaran City. Requiem mass and interment has been scheduled on Thursday, November 10.

This initiative will enhance the earth's carrying capacity against pollution. We are enjoining all Tagbilaranons to hang the 2x2 ft. tarp as seen in this car in front of their residences so people can be reminded that for a start, let us make Wednesday, a plastic bag free day. It is only 60 pesos. You can order and get tarp yourself at EBA Printers: Tel no 4123502 or 0918 6029804. Look for Vicvic. Please. Help in the info drive. Our dumping site in Dampas cannot take anymore of the plastics. Thank you Tagbilaranons.

Having known friends who are fighting the Big C, I can feel what US-based socialite Mikey Gatal and his family are going through when he shares about the condition of his sister, the 1983 Miss Young Bohol Marcel Gatal-Diego, who battles the Big C.

“Any journey down that road is not easy for a family,” says Mikey, holding back tears.

Marcel is suffering from breast cancer stage 3, the same one singer-songwriter Anastacia is a survivor of.

The American Cancer Society says, “Stage 3 breast cancer is more advanced than Stage 2, but it is not considered metastatic. For this diagnosis, cancer has not spread from the breast to organs or other distant sites in the body, but cancer cells will have traveled to nearby underarm (axillary) lymph nodes, or lodged in lymph nodes beneath your breastbone (sternum) or even under your collarbone.”

“She’s in high spirits,” adds Mikey, who will visit Marcel this summer.

VRS is requesting its readers to pray for Marcel’s speedy recovery. Remember, as poet Alfred Tennyson said, more things are wrought by prayers than this world dreams of. Prayer can move mountains.

The news first appeared on Bohol’s seasoned host Raul Gatal’s blog (www.raulgatal.blogspot.com). Yes, what’s in the blog is true.

My Ate Marcel Battles the Big C

I have been trying to keep this to myself but I realized that by sharing our pain, people would get to be more cognizant of breast cancer and how it affects and devastates the families of its victims

It was only last December 2013 when I visited Ate Marcel and her family in Manila that I found out about the Big C. The biopsy results confirmed what she had dreaded ever since she felt a lump in her chest. The diagnosis was breast cancer stage 3b.

I remember going to the toilet right after we talked. It was there at that very private area where I tore up and really cried. After regaining my composure, I went back to the living room where Ate Marcel, Kuya
Tony and their kids were gathered.

I remember going out with the whole family and with younger brother Junjun for some bonding moments. It was supposed to be a happy occasion for Christmas was approaching and yet there was that dark cloud of gloom that hovered over us.

.. with daughter Katrina after a chemotherapy session.
That was one sad Christmas reminiscent of the one that we had the year Papa Rogie passed away.

Yes, my dear Ate Marcel is facing the biggest battle of her life and we need the power of a Prayer Brigade as she continues her treatment regimens

Ate Marcel’s last visit to Bohol was only last January. She insisted in coming home to pay her last respects to our late uncle “Papa Rey Gatal” before he was to be buried last January 3. It was a heart-wrenching reunion for Ate Marcel and cousins Ate Roni and Manoy Rocky who practically grew up together since our respective houses in Gallares St. were right beside each other.

I couldn’t help but shed a tear when Ate Marcel was sobbing on Manoy Rocky’s shoulders. Manoy Rocky, then Tagbilaran City’s Kabataang Barangay Chairman was the one who insisted that Ate Marcel accept the offer to represent the city in the 1983 Miss Young Bohol Pageant. She followed his advice and the rest is history.

Cancer is such a treacherous disease. Once it latches onto the cancer patient’s system, it is irreversible unless there is medical intervention. The malignant tumour results from the abnormal and uncontrolled division of affected cells

Right now Ate Marcel has lost her hair as a result of her ongoing chemotherapy. Ate Marcel has always been a survivor and been a veteran of life’s battles and wars. She has always been a strong, opinionated and determined woman who never been known to back out from trials and challenges.

But Ate Marcel can never do this alone. Let’s rally behind her as she faces the biggest battle of her life. Give her some words of encouragement and please offer a prayer for her

Making this public has been a very difficult decision for us. We could just keep quiet about this but it would be unfair for family, friends and classmates.

We want to share this so that everyone would realize that cancer is very real and can happen to anyone including your loved ones.

(Note: The American Cancer Society (ACS) stresses the importance of finding breast cancer early.  The goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms.
“Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year,” says ACS’ website. If you have sore, red and itchy nipples, upper back pain, a change in nipple appearance or size, change in breast size and pain, lumps or swelling in the armpits, it is advisable that you contact a doctor as early as possible.)
