VP Sara Duterte a crowd-magnet as she visits Bohol

By Leo Udtohan

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte was the honored guest during the 168th Bohol Day last Friday, July 22.

Her visit was first in Bohol since winning by a landslide in the island province with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.  Political analysts and observers said their victories were menaingful and impressive considering that both did not visit Bohol during the campaign period.

Duterte's last visit to Bohol was in 2019 when she campaigned for some senators and former Cabinet Secretary Jun Evasco Jr.

Duterte went first to Clarin town to visit the schools ravaged by Typhoon Odette (international name "Rai") last year.

She met with local officials and the Department of Education (DepEd) personnel to talk about the repair, reconstruction, and renovation of classroom buildings destroyed by the typhoon.

After Clarin, she went to the Bohol Cultural Center for the Bohol Day program where she was treated to the reenactment of  "Sanduguan" (Blood Compact) between  Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Boholano chieftain Datu Sikatuna in March 1565.

"The last time siguro I was taught about Sandugo was in high school in Philippine History pa. And it's good to be reminded of our history as a country," she told at least 200 crowd of local chief executives and heads of different agencies.

She urged Boholanos to support the new administration to improve Filipinos’ condition.

“Let us keep one another in friendship, prayer, and pride as we take the next steps of recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. I ask the Boholanos’ support as the new administration makes decisions in our best interest,” she said.

Duterte said that Boholanos were fiercely protective of their place and territory.  She cited the 2017 clashes with members of Abu Sayaff group.

A band of bandits landed on the island on April 10, 2017 from their stronghold in Basilan province on a kidnapping mission, but they were thwarted as alert residents tipped off the authorities on their presence in Inabanga town.

Duterte hoped that Bohol’s collective harmony and faith would overcome challenges and spread across the country.

“Bohol is always a welcoming place, a new home for others, and home of the finest spots in the global lieu, glistening in its continued motivation, culture and tradition and faith. The entire Bohol will blossom, blossom again, blossom more…,” she said.

Bohol Gov. Aris Aumentado said, “Boholanos are ruled by a spirit of never dies.”

“Treat a Boholano with respect and kindness, and he will open his humble home for you as a long, long lost brother… And you will enjoy the hospitality of Si Katuna,” said Aumentado

After her speech, Duterte went to Shang Palace Seafood Restaurant for an exclusive "meet and greet" with Alyansang Bol-anon Alang sa Kausaban (Abaka) members.

Duterte was mobbed by excited Abaka members, officials and supporters who wanted to have their autographs signed by the vice president.  She willingly obliged requests for photographs and autographs, but her escorts and security aides whisked her out to the stage for a short program.

Bohol became a separate politico-military province from Cebu on July 22, 1854.

‘Abaka’ movement launched to intensify campaign against corruption and drugs

Several groups and personalities on Friday, July 20, launched the “Alyansang Bol-anon para sa Kausaban” (Abaka) to support President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration's so-called war on drugs and corruption.

Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco, Jr. likened the movement to abaca fiber, a plant which is natural resource of the Philippines, considered as the strongest natural fiber that is suitable for rope making.

“Kining ‘ABAKA’ o Alyansang Bol-Anon para sa Kausaban’ usa kini nga pundok multi-sectoral gikan sa laing-laing sector sa Bohol aron sa ingon niana, maghawiray kita sa atong mga kamot, atong buhi-on ang atong mga damgo sa kausaban.hangtud ang kausaban mahitabo sa atong lalawigan sa tukmang panahon,” Evasco explained.

The organic members of Abaca are Norris Oculam, as chairman; Donald Borja Sevilla, Boy Pernia, Leon Calipusan, Msgr. Jeff Malanog, Argeo  Melisimo, Nonnie Orillosa, Dr. Lorna Rances, Joy Sevilla, Berting Datahan, Dr. Atup, Fr. Warli Salise, Jr., and Holger Horn, et al—as members.

The launching was graced by the presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte-Carpio.

Even she figured prominently in surveys, Mayor Sara reiterated that she had no interest to run for Senate in May 2019 elections.

“My plan is to run for mayor of Davao City for the 2019 elections,” Mayor Sara told Bohol reporters during the launching of the Alyansang Bol-anon para sa Kausaban (Abaka) in which she was the guest speaker.

She said she felt she was still effective as mayor of Davao City, a good neighbor to other places in the country.

“I feel that Davao City can help other LGUs with all the years of best practices and all the years of good projects that Davao City LGU had produced. We think that and I think  I can help more if I am mayor and ask everybody to come to Davao and look at what the local government has done for  Davao City,” she added.

Mayor Sara told more than 1,000 participants of Abaka that the senate is not for her since she is a silent type.

“Feel nako wala koy buhaton sa Senado,” she said.

Abaka is the umbrella of the various political personalities and persuasions identified with President Duterte.

Abaka members want to continue the aggressive campaign on drugs and stop corruption in the province.

Bohol has been ranked fifth in the Philippines and first in Central Visayas in terms of barangay drug affectation percentage.

Last month, according to Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency provincial officer Nicolas Gomez, around 400 of 1,109  barangays in Bohol have been recommended by the provincial government and the PDEA to be declared drug-free by the multi-agency Regional Oversight Committee.

“This is not for 2019, Abaka will support leaders which we believed can help Bohol,” said Norris Oculam, chairman of Abaka.

“We are not relying on politicians. This is a movement of the people regardless of political affiliations,” he added.

Mayor Sara said since her political party “Hugpong ngPagbabago,” which was recently approved  by Commission on Elections (Comelec) as a regional political party in Region 11, she  sought alliance with other parties and movements such as Abaka in Bohol.

Also present during the Abaka launching were Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Evasco, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernest Pernia,  former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Francis Tolentino , presidential spokesman Harry Roque, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar , PhilHealth board member Celestina Dela Serna, special envoys to China Carlos Chan and Fernando “Ding” Borja,  and Philippine Sports Commission chairman William "Butch" Ramirez .

--Allen Ray Piezas of Clarin, Norman Palacio of Bilar, Jacinto Naraga of San Isidro, Casey Shaun Camacho of Getafe, Danny Guivencan of Dimiao, Juliet Dano of Sevilla, Jose Nicanor Tocmo of Corella and John Geesnell Yap II of Tagbilaran City, and some councilors and village officials, attended.

Businessman Lucio Lim, Jr, of Lite Shipping, DA 7 Regional Director Salvador Diputado and wife Alma, former Panglao Mayor Doloreich Dumaluan, lawyers Rain Calimbayan, Doni Piquero and Danilo Bantugan, University of Bohol Registrar Leah Tirol-Magno and hubby Art,  Vanessa Cadorna-Aumentado, Booy village councilors Jun Telmo and Clement Ingking,  Barangay Poblacion 1 captain  Arlene Karaan, were also spotted during the event.

Cebu City Councilor Margarita “Margot” OsmeƱa and former Cebu Rep. Rachel del Mar also came to Bohol to attend the activity.

Other politicians and businessmen from Visayas and Mindanao also attended the launching.

Mayor Duterte also surprised the audience by formally endorsing  former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Francis Tolentino , presidential spokesman Harry Roque and Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar  for the senate in May 2019 elections.

Those who were present cheered and reacted positively to Mayor Duterte’s endorsement.

“So, will have to wait and see.  But they (Roque, Andanar and Tolentino) are testing the water if okay ba mudagan sila,” Mayor Duterte said.

Aside from Roque, Tolentino and Andanar, Mayor Sara also endorsed Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos, Senators JV Ejercito, Sonny Angara and Cynthia Villar.

Roque humbly thanked the mayor for the endorsement.

“Ako po’y nagagalak and I am humbled by the endorsement of Mayor Sara. Importante po sa akin ang suporta ng paboritong anak ng ating president,” said Roque.

He said he would move forward knowing that God has a plan.

“At ako po’y pinasa-Diyos kung ano ang kinabukasan sa pulitika.  Bahala na ang Panginon but I am very thankful sa endorsement.  Nung ako’y aktibisita  di ko akalain na ako’y magiging member ng  kongreso, nung ako’y nasa kongreso di ko akalain na ako’y maging miyembro ng gabinete.  Di ko alam what God has to offer me, but Thy will be done,” Roque added.

More than the launching, the movement is also looking for a real Boholano (Wanted Tinuod Nga Bol-anon).

“Matinahoron, mahigugmaon sa isig kaingon ug andam manalipod sa mga dinaogdaog.Kaliwat ni Dagohoy, sumpa sa mga kurakot ug mapahimoslanon. Mao kini ang TINOOD NGA BOL-ANON,” Donad Sevilla posted on Facebook.

Happy fiesta, Bohol!

Wake-uppers

Thirty years later, she is still a regular face on television.

One of the “white lies” we were told as children-and many believed until adulthood- is that Bohol province sinks about an inch during May, the merry month of fiestas here in Bohol province.

May 1, the mother of all fiestas, starts the month-long fiesta
celebrations in Bohol province. Faithful can visit the
St. Joseph Cathedral to see the sleeping image of St. Joseph.

Our folks told us that it is due to the thousands of Bol-anons who come home to attend the many town and barrio fiestas celebrated during the month.  In case you are in doubt,  you can check the Tagbilaran airport and piers to see the throngs of passengers and balikbayan arriving in Bohol.

It took several years for me to realize that my elders were right after all. All the "lies" that they told me are true. You know, true lies.

Well, today, in every sitio, barangay (village), town, somewhere, we are celebrating.

The fiesta celebration is not complete without the famous lechon (roasted pig), humba (stewed pork) and plenty of beer and tuba to match.

If you are adventurous enough, you can practically go round the whole province without any money and eat for free and experience the famous Boholano hospitality.

Everyone is welcome, no invitations required!

Inday Sara Duterte arrives in Bohol

Despite storm of attacks, presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte's supporters here are unstoppable.

On Friday afternoon, hundreds of thousands of supporters and fans showed up during Duterte’s daughter’s sortie in Bohol.

Former Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte was here for the Bohol-leg of the nationwide caravan Biyaheng DU30.

Sara arrived in Tubigon town at around 4 p.m. where she was mobbed by fans and supporters.  Inday Sara’s team gave candies, fans, bawlers, stickers and t-shirts. They had quick stops at Calape and Loon towns.

At around 8 p.m., Sara met provincial senior board member Dionisio Balite, who is running for vice governor in the province, for a dinner.

She said all her visits were smooth sailing.

“Okay raman. So, far kaluoy sa Ginoo, okay tanan areas naadtuan (In God’s mercies, everything went smoothly),” she said.

But the Central Visayas, according to her, the supporters are warmth.

“Mas enthusiastic ang mga tawo. Mainiton ang pagdawat (People are enthusiastic. They welcomed us warmly),” she said.

Last week, Sara was a banner headline on TV and newspapers when Sen.  Antonio Trillanes IV, who himself a vice presidential candidate, accused Rodrigo Duterte of having P211 million in an account in a bank branch in Metro Manila in 2014.

Trillanes said Duterte did not declare the P211 million in his statement of assets and liabilities and net worth (SALN). Trillanes said from 2006 to 2015, Duterte held seven join accounts with his daughter Sara at the BPI branch on Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig City, nine joint accounts at BPI-Edsa Greenhills branch and one joint account at Banco de Oro Unibank-1 in Davao City.

Failure to declare an asset is a ground for an employee’s dismissal from government service

But Sara dared her father’s accuser, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, to file a case against them.

Kung tinuod gyud nga naa siyay legitimate nga complaint sa gina-accuse niya, i-file niya sa court para makatubag ko og tarung (If it is true that what he is accusing us is a legitimate complaint, file it in court so I can answer properly),” she said.

“It is clearly a black propaganda given the fact that Duterte is leading the survey with only a few days away from May 9,” said Duterte supporter JP Maslog.

The younger Duterte served as Davao City mayor from 2010 to 2013 when her father was vice mayor.
She also denied that she and her siblings had properties that they did not declare.
According to the Land Registration Authority, the Duterte children have 35 properties, 11 of which are under the mayor’s daughter’s name and four under her husband’s.

She said she had declared all of her properties in her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN), adding most of her assets came from her parents after they separated.

Pagbulag nila in 1998 gibalhin tanang properties sa among manag-igsuon kay maoy gi-require sa korte (When they separated in 1998, their properties were divided among us siblings because that was required by the court),” she said.

“Even sa balay sa akong mama supposedly iyaha, gusto sa kong mama ibutang sa akong pangalan para walay makailog nga lain (Even the house of my mother which was supposedly hers, my mama wanted to place it under my name so it would not be taken by others),” she added.

She said she did not have any idea of the properties owned by her brothers Paolo, now vice mayor, and Sebastian.

The accusations, she said, were just black propaganda orchestrated by her father’s detractors.

Silang tanan. Kalaban. Of course, nag-dako ko sa pulitika and kana tanan part na siya sa isa ka election (They are all enemies. Of course, I grew up in politics and all of these were part of one election),” she said.

Mao nay gitawag nato nga black propaganda. In fact, naghinay-hinay siya gawas una pagbabae, mamatay tao. Karun, kana na jud (That is what we call black propaganda. These are slowly coming out. First was him being a womanizer and then a killer. And now this).”

She said her family was prepared for mudslinging and accusations because every election even in Davao, such issues would usually come out.

The younger Duterte thanked their supporters that despite the accusations, they remained loyal.

Pasalamat ko sa ilaha, through thick and thin, naa sila. Sa kalisud naa sila (I am thankful to them. Through thick and thin, they are there with us. In difficulties, they are with us).

The Visayas, considered as a stronghold of administration presidential candidate Mar Roxas, may be slowly slipping away from Roxas’ grasp, according to his allies and party mates who are now supporting Sen. Grace Poe and Duterte.
