Sinulog 2014 and Pacman offers prayers for Bohol

• Boholanos wow Sinulog crowd
• Pacman offers prayers for Bohol

Wake-uppers:
Scene: More than 5,000 participants from the different Christian denominations and faith movements attended this year's National Bible Week and 2nd prayer gathering at the CPG Sports Complex, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Jan. 25.  Sarangani Province Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Dapidran Pacquiao was the guest of honor.  The participants who cheered his name and received him like a hero, listened intently as Pacquiao shared about the word of God, sounding more like a pastor than a sports demigod. He encouraged the crowd to read the Bible everyday and deepen their relationship with God.

Rep. Manny Pacquiao has led the crowd in prayer and shared as well his beliefs during the National Bible Week in Bohol; and Pacman with Bohol 2nd district Rep. Aris Aumentado and wife Vanessa Aumentado.  Photo by: LPU/Charina Aumentado

School teacher Mrs. Clementina Gamil said, “My prayer for the celebration of the national prayer is that we Filipinos will help one another to keep peace and unity and we will be freed from catastrophe like what happened before that God will be keeping us through Mama Mary.”

Cebu was unmistakably the top destination last weekend.

“I heard the drumbeat and saw the merry spirit of this year’s Sinulog 2014,” said my sis Arlene who was with me in Cebu last Wednesday morning to meet some friends at the DFA.

Thursday night I had a brief chat with Elvie Bongosia of PIA-Bohol and she said that she, too, was going to Cebu but she didn’t make it because of the strong waves.

Friday afternoon Edward Guyano and I excitedly talked about his trip to Cebu on Saturday but he missed the chance to catch the last trip going to Cebu.

I found out that Engr. Aprilmel Lupot, a proud Boholano and obviously a Santo Niño devotee, was in Cebu not just to attend the Sinulog 2014 but was involved during the parade as the “float manager” for the Bohol delegation.

“I felt so fulfilled that I got involved in this year's Sinulog festival that we didn't just stay home and claim it a usual day all for the two things we both care about - Sr. Sto Nino and Bohol,” shared Engr. Lupot.

Oh, sigh! The Panglao delegation failed to win in this year’s Sinulog. But there’s next time.

“Win or lose, Bohol made a statement that we've risen after a great fall through the participation of Tribu Panglaoanon in Sinulog this year. We may have failed to make it but no words can explain how proud I am that we were represented in the grandest and most awaited festival in the country. You made us more proud to be Boholanos!” said Bb. Pilipinas World 2006 Anna Maris Igpit. “To Municipality of Panglao headed by Mayor Nila Montero, choreographer Anthony, Province of Bohol, SouthPalms, Boholanos who were on the float, propsmen, instrumentalists and dancers, you all deserve a big congratulations for representing us well. Your participation in the parade is a winning act already that despite the earthquake that damaged some parts of our beloved province, we are still thankful to Snr. Sto. Niño for keeping our faith stronger than ever. Pit Señor! Bangon Bohol!”

The Sinulog fever is now over but the memories live on.

Anyway, here’s an article from Engr. Lupot who says it all:

This year’s Sinulog 2014 celebration had a different meaning for a Cebu-based Boholana like me. I initially thought I’d just watch everything on local television. Unexpectedly, I became part of the grand parade and even had the chance to ride our float!

Tribu Panglaonon and the team behind the Bohol float, assembled across Sunstar Building in P. Del Rosario Street. Our dancers and instrumentalists were identified with their gold costumes.

This is the first time that the Province of Bohol, in collaboration with the Provincial Tourism Council, displayed a float. It was designed by Bluegrass Project, Michael Yu and Joseph Dumadag, and with the invaluable support of South Palms Resort Panglao, through Mae Uy Yau. It bears the theme: “Beautiful Island, Beautiful People”. It has a stylized representation of the iconic Chocolate Hills through a series of arches running in the center of the float. The dominant white color represents the hopes and aspirations of the Boholanos, and the purple color is for the sweet and fragrant ube kinampay. Forest ferns, purple and lavender dendrobiums, sonia boom orchids and purple mums adorned this magestic float.

What made the float more appealing was the presence of our  lovely models—siblings Erika (reigning Ms. UB Personality 2013) and Erik Karcher, Kay Marie Berangel, Rami Harven Gallego, Ms. Cebu 2012 3rd runner up Jonnie Rose Louise Wee, Mr. Philippines Youth 2012 and HNU student  Ar Dela Serna, Mr. Rajah Bohol 2013 Danilo Torcende, Best Model of the World Philippines 2004 Liza Tandugon, Ms. HNU Personality 2013 Candy Cumayas and Jinlyn Talocod. Three of our lovely models wore white couture dresses by designer Hanz Coquilla.

Hanz Coquilla is a proud Boholano designer with a father who is from Antequera. He is known for his remarkable participation in Project Runway Philippines Season 2, Cebu Young Designers Competition 2006, Mega Young Designers Competition 2011, Look of Style Awards 2012, Sunstar’s Best of Cebu 2013; and with designs featured in magazines like Mega, Preview, Look, Style Weekend by the Inquirer; and an international exposure on Fashion One TV and Traversing the Orient. Hanz was the official designer of the Philippines for the recent Ms. Earth 2013.

The whole Bohol contingent was able to start moving around 11:00 am. We made a turn to Mango Avenue at 11:40 a.m., reached Fuente Osmeña Circle at 3 p.m., and arrived at the Cebu City Sports Complex at 5 p.m.

The most amazing part of the whole experience was seeing the people’s reactions when they saw our dancers, instrumentalists, float, and most specially our models. The crowd was cheering, shouting, screaming and taking pictures of the float and those on it. Our models were thought to have been Mariel Rodriguez Padilla, Robin Padilla, Enrique Gil, Xian Lim, among others. Well that’s quite a good comparison!

The Bohol contingent was overwhelmed with the positive response shown by our Cebuano friends.  It was about faith, devotion, warmth and hospitality — the very true spirit of this annual Cebuano festivity called Sinulog.

Bohol’s Best Moments of 2013

2013 has been a year of devastation, courage and triumph. From the 7.2 magnitude earthquake, to Bohol’s beauty pageants, to celebrity sightings, see what had us talking this year:

Firs time, baby! = Collin Chio Joshua Jubac and Candy Cumayas were crowned as 1st Mr and Ms HNU Personality 2013. The 1st Saulog Festival, a cultural event in honor of Saint Joseph the Worker, the City’s patron saint, was held in April. The authentic Boholano cuisine was introduced for the first time at the Loboc Riverwatch. It is the only floating restaurant which offers a wide array of mouth-watering traditional Boholano cuisine at the famous Loboc River, the river of life.

Goodbye, Prony= Bohol’s biggest python in captivity died on August 14. It was on October 21, 1996 when Prony was found by Sofronio Salibay which measured 5 feet and 5 kilograms. In 2012, Prony weighed 280 kilos and measured 27 feet long. Her waist line was 34 inches. The Salibay family, which runs the sanctuary and owned the python, maintained she was the largest snake in captivity in the Philippines, though there were no official records. Don’t worry, MariMar is still inside the Prony and Wildlife Sanctuary in Baclayon showcasing her deadly antics.

Sentimental Journey= Winning "The Voice Philippines" was the goal, but for Bohol’s pride Kim Mainit, “The Boses na May Gustong Patunayan,” going home was always the sweetest trip.  After the stressful battle rounds, Kim got the chance to be with his family and friends in Bohol. According to VRS, who tagged along with Kim, tears flowed as he finally got to meet his immediate family in Anda town whom he hadn’t seen for a long time. He also paid an emotional visit to the cemetery to visit the graves of his grandparents “to pay homage and ask for guidance.” Here’s another story we can’t forget: Baby Jane finds her family after 51 years through Facebook.  Philippine Child Wonder in the 1960s Baby Jane or Jane Zenaida Galinato-Smith in real life was reconnected with her estranged family after she was “kidnapped” more than fifty years ago. Baby Jane embraced her siblings and relatives for the very first time during the Galinato Global Grand Gathering or GGGG held last July in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

Take It! Take It! = Without a doubt, the most-watched man of the year was Rajah sa Bohol Danilo Torrifiel Torcende who accused the organizer, JCI-Boholana Kisses, of not giving him the prizes months after the first Sikatuna: Rajah sa Bohol, a male beauty pageant. He had not received his Php10,000 prize and he had not heard anything from the organizers and all efforts to get the prizes had proved futile. When Torcende posted his anger on Facebook about the “Rajah scam,” it had struck chord around the province, racking up people and it quickly found its way to the beauty pageant industry in Bohol. Also Bohol’s celebrated make-up artist and hairstylist also complained the long-delayed prizes of the Mr and Miss Teen Bohol organized by the SK headed by Jethro Lim Imboy.  Blogger Edik Dolotina had the best reaction, “Why a lot of them happened in Bohol?”

Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder=  Barely two weeks after her reign as Miss Bohol Sandugo (MBS) 2013, Brigitte Tanoja Burato faced an issue that could almost finish her reign as Miss Bohol Sandugo. Burato was supposed to join the Miss Silka Bohol 2013, a violation of the Miss Bohol Sandugo rules and regulations since she is not allowed to join any beauty pageant in the province until she has completed her reign.

“The problem of Miss Alicia Brigitte Burato is she has an attitude problem,” said the socialite VRS. “She should inform first the MBS committee if she has to join another beauty pageant.”

Burato had a closed-door heart-to-heart talk with the MBS organizers.

The rules said: The Miss Bohol Sandugo should have never been married, never been pregnant and in good health and of good moral character during her reign. She pledges to abide by the rules and regulations set by the organizers and to support and participate in the activities initiated by the committee.

Celebrity and VIP Sightings= Journey’s lead singer Arnel Pineda was spotted in Bohol and he was mobbed by fans at the Loboc River. Other celebrities who enjoyed Bohol were Isabel Oli, Tim Yap, Crystal Henares, Julia Barretto, Richard Poon, Mark Bautista, Christian Bautista, Noli de Castro, Kara David, Korina Sanchez, Jovit Baldivino, Sam Milby, Kian Cepriano, Empress, John Prats, John Lapus, Direk Loren Dyogi, Ruru Madrid, Ted Failon, Erwin Tulfo, Jessica Soho, Mel Tiangco, Kapuso hot couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, Bianca King, Rafael Rosell, Dion Ignacio, JC Tiuseco, Mikael Daez, Ryan Bang, Irma Adlawan , Mylene Dizon, Max Collins, Orlando Sol (of Masculado fame), Ruru Madrid, Diva Monteliba, child actors Miggs Cuarderno, Barbara Miguel, Nafa Hilario-Cruz, Ashely Strom, Xyrus Cruz, Yogo Singh, Pinoy Dream Academy runner-up Ronnie Liang, Viva Hotbabe Jaycee Parker, Kapamilya star Aldred Gatchalian, former US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry K. Thomas Jr , Atty. Midas Marquez, Miss Netherlands 2006 and Mrs. Globe 2013 Sheryl Lyn Baas, PDI’s entertainment columnist Dolly Anne Carvajal, Hollywood reporter Ruben Nepales and wife Janet. Daniel Padilla was the special guest of the 6th edition of Anyag sa Tubigon 2013.  2010 Miss Universe runner up Venus Raj graced the 2013 Miss Panglao pageant. Charice Pempengco and her girlfriend Alyssa Quijano visited Bohol one week before the earthquake for their first anniversary. USAid Deputy Assistant Administrator for Asia Gregory Beck, Gloria Steele and U.S. Ambassador Philip Goldberg visited the areas affected by the earthquake. (Note: This list is not complete.)

Famous Feud= LGU Loboc thru Mayor Helen Alaba banned Loboc Riverwatch  owned by Tessie Labunog-Sumampong from taking off  and barred guests from riding the floating resto of Tessie. The widening rift worsened after a Temporary Restraining Order issued by a local court was defied by the mayor.

You bring pride, you're the inspiration= Boholano young entrepreneur Dalareich Polot was the grand winner in the First Young Entrepreneur’s Bootcamp 2013. The judges were impressed of Dalareich and they were inspired of her life story.  True to her name, the tableya princess Dalareich has received a cash prize (a whooping US5,000 dollars!) and a plaque.  “Now I can justify why God gave me my name Dalareich (Dollar-rich),” she said. Clement Paulinel Ingking was selected as Region VII’s The Outstanding Barangay Official of Year 2013 or TOBOY for SK Chairperson Category on Oct. 10 in Cebu City.

Winner takes it all= Finishing off the year with a flourish,  Alberto Rodulfo "Ar" dela Serna was declared Mr Generation East 2013 grand winner, Sta. Lucia Generation East Model Search. Dela Serna was adjudged first runner-up in Mr Philippine Youth in 2002. In Nov. 2012, he replaced the dethroned Mr. Philippine Youth 2012 Leo Angeles Flores of Parañaque. Also, Island City Mall's "Voices of Champions" grand winner was Alma Mida Golosino.

No longer Mama’s boy= 2013 was a year that changed everything for Mr. Teen Bohol 2012 Adryan Mila who managed to be in the top 12 of the Mr. and Ms. Philippine Youth 2013. In his personal life, Mila was raised by his mother alone.  He confessed he was a “mother’s boy” but we think he’ll look back at 2013 as the year he became his own man.  Another brave man who tried his luck in the Mister International Philippines 2013 was Rex Pilayre Bangalao.

People we lost in 2013= Shock waves rippled through the business industry last June 12 (also his youngest son's birthday) as news surfaced that businessman and public servant Ben Udtohan had died. “Unbelievably sad news. A fine man,” tweeted some friends. Nong Ben loved movies. In fact, he supported movies Nandito Ako Nagmamahal Sa 'Yo (2009) and Amigo (2010) which were done in Bohol.  Others who have “crossed the bar” included Dr. Prisco Tallo who died on August 28. Dr. Tallo served as resident physician of the Bohol Provincial Hospital and chief of the Loon District Hospital and Carmen Cong. Natalio Castillo Memorial Hospital.  Former congressman Isidro “Totoy” Clarin Zarraga of the third congressional district of Bohol died last December 10. He was 88.

Chop the Pork Barrel= Angry but peaceful Million March anti-pork protest was held in Bohol banding people from different walks of life and many sectors of society. Several anti-pork barrel rallies were held in Tagbilaran City.

Election Madness= Led by Beauche International and former Carmen Mayor  Conchita Toribio- delos Reyes who was running for governor against incumbent governor Edgar Chatto, several other politicians (those  "showbiz"-connected and lovers of the arts and culture) were throwing their hats into the 2013 political ring: Rene Relampagos (first district), Aris Aumentado (second district) and Art Yap (uncontested, third district) for representatives, Yul Lopez, Benjie Arcamo, Abel Damaerio (first disrict), Jaja Jumamoy, Gerry Garcia and Tommy Abapo (second district), Dioning Balite, Elpidio Jala, Godofreda Tirol, Boy Imboy (third district) for board members, Dr. Abe Lim (Tagbilaran), Dodong Gonzaga (Tagbilaran), Marlon Amila (Tubigon), Nila Montero (Panglao), Sample Tirol (Buenavista), Baba Yap (Tagbilaran City), NiÑo Rey Boniel (Bien Unido), Marnilou Ayuban (uncontested, Alicia), Sulpicio Yu, Jr (Calape), Moloy Apat (Dagohoy), Tita Gallentes (Garcia Hernandez), Roygie Jumamoy (Inabanga), Fortunato Abrenilla (Jagna), Casoy Camacho (Jetafe), Rina Salazar (uncontested, Lila), May Imboy (Loay), Lloyd Peter Lopez (Loon), Leoncio Evasco, Jr. (Maribojoc), Tessie Boyboy (Pres. Carlos P. Garcia Island) and Judith Cajes (Trinidad) for mayors; Pureza Chatto (Balilihan), Pedro Budiongan, Jr (Carmen), Iven Lim (Cortes), Lulu Bongalos (Dauis), Wilson Pajo (Pilar) and Pedro Fuertes (Panglao) for vice mayors; and Ondo Montero (Panglao), Ariel Lungay (Catigbian), Jono Jumamoy (Inabanga), Rochelle Brigitte Imboy (Loay), Crispina Vergara (Mabini), Allan Tinaja (San Isidro) and Adam Jala, Oscar Glovasa, Jojo Bompat and Aleckoy Lim (Tagbilaran City) for councilors.  The 2013 elections also validated Aumentado's power and might in the second district of Bohol. (Note: This list is not complete.)

Fashion icons, catwalk makers= Who would have thought that our own Boholano socialites could be so convincingly classy? This year, the Rotary Club of Tagbilaran gathered the talented fashion experts and couturiers Henry Baron, Maximiel Tallo, Jong Magallano, Omie Auza, Rhigel Dulfo and EJ Relampagos for Reveal, the most popular fashion show of 2013. The local models, who were members of the Rotary Club, submitted themselves to fashion and etiquette lessons and expensive makeovers from the Bohol Fashion Designers’ Circle. The result was a high-fashion event that no doubt made the fashion scene in Bohol a jaws drop.

Amazing Santa= You don't need superpowers to be a hero. After the 7.2 magnitude earthquake, the deadliest and strongest in recent years (releasing an energy equivalent to 32 Hiroshima bombs), damaged our infrastructures, pulverized historical monuments, polarized commerce, destroyed livelihoods and killed people. There were many amazing people and organizations that are making things better. I’ve realized that there are many young people who care about other people and the province keeping the bayanihan spirit alive. They have volunteered to pack and deliver relief goods to far-flung barangays.  Special recognition to Bb. Pilipinas-World 2006 Anna Maris Igpit and her Oplan Bangon Bohol. Step aside, Santa Claus.

Invasion of the Cybernauts= PIA-Bohol is the celebrity king of social media. Or at least “it” was, until Edik Dolotina dethroned him! Edik who had never been a super-active tweeter but a Facebooker who continued to mesmerize netizens with his post on Facebook. Of course, Fiel Angeli Araoarao-Gabin , Anna Maris Igpit and Liza Macalandag had managed to conquer both Twitter and Facebook. But more about that in a moment!

Our Pledge of Love Can’t Be Broken= It took former Commissioner of the National Youth Commission (NYC) and Department of Agriculture administrative officer Benjie Oliva and his wife Joan Jagonos over a year to prepare for their dream wedding which was supposed to be held on Oct. 19 at Dauis Church. What the Oliva couple was not prepared for was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that would shatter their wedding unforgettable. “We decided t postpone the wedding considering the damage cost by the earthquake that hit Bohol. The Dauis Church was totally damaged,” said Benjie in an interview while he and Joan were volunteering at the St. Joseph Cathedral for the relief goods. The wedding was finally realized on Dec 7.

Believe It or Not= Martin Slisans, a Latvian national swims from Bohol to Cebu to promote RP tourism. Slisans started swimming at around 1 a.m. from Catagbacan, Loon and reached Argao, Cebu at around 2 p.m. on May 18. The long distance swimming was almost 30 kilometers.

Deal or No Deal?= Former Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan withdrew his candidacy for congressman for personal, health and family reasons. VRS denied the report that there was 'under the table' agreement between Rep. Art Yap and Mayor Calipusan. Awww

Nature’s Wonder= The surface rupture (faultline) which appeared after the killer quake in barangay Anonang, Inabanga town invites tourists to explore nature. People also visited barangay Obujan, Antequera to see the landcracks which killed four family members.

You, too, must have read the official statement of local government unit of Albur on allegedly "fake" team in the recently concluded Boholympics, which was not "officially" endorsed by the LGU.

Here is Albur's official statement on the issue:

Official Statement on the 17 and Under Football Team named Alburquerque in the Boholympics 2013
The Football Team organized by Mr. Erwin Angalot of Tagbilaran City for the 17 and Under which played as the Alburquerque Team during the recently concluded Boholympics 2013 is not recognized by the Office of the Mayor of Alburquerque, Bohol. The so called Alburquerque Team is composed of members who are not from Alburquerque, Bohol, much less of Barangay Ponong. Neither was it organized by any Alburanon, trained in Alburquerque or by an Alburanon, adviced by an Alburanon nor was it formed in coordination with LGU officials of Alburquerque or supported by LGU funds.

The Office of the Mayor condemns the fraudulent way and brazen trickery that led to the formation of the fake Alburquerque Team, especially the getting of Certificates of Residence from the Barangay Captain of Ponong and the signing of the forms by the Albur MPDC in behalf of the Mayor.

On July 18, 2013, reports have reached the Mayor’s Office regarding the formation of the team. It was known that Mr. Angalot came looking for the Mayor on the afternoon of July 17, 2013, for his signature of the required paperworks of the players. Said papers were not personally signed by the Mayor, but was signed by the MPDC. The following day, the Mayor instructed Ms. Vera Villovido-Gesite to coordinate with the office of Mr. Joel Molina to inform him that the Alburquerque Team is not recognized by the office of the Mayor. An assurance was given that this request will be dealt with and acted appropriately.

On July 24, 2013, the Office of the Mayor received reports that an Alburquerque Team still played during the Boholympics, despite the Mayor’s putting all the stops to the fake team.

According to Mayor Tungol, “In Albur, we teach our children honesty and integrity! We do not teach them to lie just to play in the Boholympics”. Mayor Tungol, further, is demanding an investigation on this anomalous behavior with the Sports Commission and the Boholympics Committee of the Provincial Government.

(Note: VRS called and texted Erwin Angalot of 17 and Under Football Team for his side but he never replied.)

Miss Alicia crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo 2013
The beautiful 18-year-old University of San Carlos sophomore and a dean's lister brought the Miss Bohol Sandugo, the  province’s oldest beauty pageant, last June 20. She is now included in the Miss Bohol Honor Roll.
Brigitte Tanoja Burato, of Alicia town, beat 17 other beauty queens to take the title. She is also the 2013 Miss University of San Carlos School of Business and Economics and the 2012 Miss Olive C- USC Campus.

Keep smiling! (l-r) first runner-up Shaila Mae Rebortera, Miss Bohol Sandugo 2013 Brigitte Burato and second runner-up Dae Narah Garcia, appear on stage after being named Miss Bohol Sandugo 2013 winners. Courtesy: Miss Bohol Sandugo Fanpage

Named first runner-up and Miss Photogenic was Shaila Mae Rebortera of Baclayon (hometown of actor Cesar Montano) and second runner-up was Dae Narah Garcia  of Talibon town whose family lineage includes former Philippine President Carlos P. Garcia.

Like the other beauty contests, the Miss Bohol Sandugo is a rich source of "showbiz" material. Some of the title-holders and finalists who eventually became "famous" include Olivia Solis (Miss Bohol 1957 ) who became actress in Visayan films, Delia Canda- de la Serna  (Miss Bohol 1962 ) won Miss Philippines 1962-Visayas or third runner-up to Lalaine Benett who became the 1963 Miss Universe third runner-up, Emma Mumar (1968 Miss Bohol)  was a semifinalist in 1968 Bb. Send some love this Feb and Aris Aumentado files COC

Courtesy: Smart
Wake-uppers:
Scene: February 10, 2013 marks the Chinese New Year and a day of celebrations to herald the beginning of the Year of the Snake. To enjoy prosperity, longevity, and happiness, my Chinese friends told me to wear black, blue (light-blue), and green to charm the snake. Have these foods during the Chinese New Year to ensure a prosperous and happy year to come : tikoy (it represents the togetherness of the family and stronger bonds), prawn (symbolizes liveliness), dumplings (when boiled in water, represent a family’s being able to recover a long lost wish), pomelo (for abundance and prosperity), tangerines, oranges and kiat-kiat (for wealth and luck, these fruits are believed to bring abundance and happiness), peanuts (for longevity), long noodles (if noodles are served, then “keep them as long as possible long for long life), nian gao (for achieving new heights in the coming year) and jai (a vegetarian dish for longevity). Add sea moss for prosperity, lotus seeds for children/birth of sons, lily buds to “send 100 years of harmonious union”, Chinese black mushrooms to “fulfill wishes from east to west”, long leafy greens and long beans to wish a long life for parents, whole fish for abundance and to ensure a good start and finish and to avoid bad luck throughout the year, and sweets and desserts to bring a sweet life in the new year.

Scene:  Actor Mikael Daez shared his Bohol experience in the Feb. 4, 2013 issue of the Philippine Star: Bohol was such a peaceful experience. It allowed me to recharge and completely get my mind off things.  I think it’s a place where people can really “get away from it all.... It feels completely untouched in Bohol and I get jealous over their way of life because there doesn’t seem to be any stress in their lives. I admit I may not be able to live there for long periods of time but I will definitely go back if I need a place to recharge.

It's final: Erico Aristotle “Aris” Aumentado has replaced his father, the late Bohol 2nd district Rep. Erico Aumentado, in the congressional race this May 2013 elections.

"I can make it, kaya nako ang mualagad sa katawhan sa segundo distrito," said Aris, debunking rumors that he could not serve the people like his father,’ “ang akong kandidatura walay kausaban sa akong amahan diin nag-una ang tinuoray nga serbisyo."

Erico Aris Aumentado (center) files his COC for congressman of the second district of Bohol last Monday at the provincial Comelec Office. With Aris are (l-r) Dra. Sharleen Lim, Carmen Mayor Che Toribio- delos Reyes and Mayor Thomas Gonzaga and supporters.
Aris was talking to reporters last Monday after he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) at the provincial Comelec Office. He was accompanied by gubernatorial bet Carmen Mayor Che Toribio-delos Reyes, vice-gubernatorial bet Dra. Sharleen Lim, big personalities like Ma. Fe Camacho-Lejos, Tommy Abapo, lawyer Handel Lagunay, Azon Galbreath, Danao Mayor Thomas Gonzaga, Bie Unido Mayor Rey Niño Boniel and other mayors and barangay captains, family members and supporters, who according to Fr. Joseum Sumampong in his homily, “mga nagmahal nimo mao naa sila karun aron musuporta kanimo.” (I like the homily of Fr. Sumampong who challenged Aris and those supporters “Don't give up. Adunay purpose ang Ginoo sa matag-usa kanato.")

In 2004, Aris wanted to run as vice mayor in Ubay town but his father disapproved his plan. Again, he wanted to run for board member in 2010 but his father didn’t like the idea of having two Aumentados in public service.

"I've thought hard about it," Aris added. "Wala pa ko sa akong hunahuna adto dawaton nako iyang hangyo to continue serve the people."

They say that Aris inherited much more than looks, political savvy and business acumen from his father.

Teased about it, Aris smiled and conceded that he might never equal, much more surpass his father’s record.

End of an era: Erico passes away

Boholanos here and abroad were united in mourning after the passing of Bohol 2nd district Rep. Erico Boyles Aumentado.
According to Boy Pernia, Aumentado passed away at the St. Luke’s Medical Center-Global City, 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25 after a bout with pneumonia.

He was 72.

Aumentado chaired the House ethics committee and was the chairman in forming the guidelines to make public the Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth of House members.
In a statement, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. called Aumentado an “exemplary public servant.”
“He [Aumentado] deserves full credit for transforming Bohol into one of the most progressive, peaceful and richest provinces today. He was truly an outstanding solon -- learned, dedicated, and principled,” Belmonte said.
He also lauded the late congressman for his “integrity and honor” which “have never been in doubt.”
“He [Aumentado] died a poor man because he never made politics the source of his livelihood. He was a very dear friend for whom I had the highest respect both as a colleague in Congress and in the writing profession,” the House leader added.
Occidental Mindoro Representative Amelita Villarosa, a colleague of Aumentado in the House minority bloc, said the late congressman will be remembered for transforming Bohol into one of the country's most peaceful provinces.
"He had made a record of having won all his political battles since 1967," Villarosa said, as he recalled how Aumentado rose from extreme poverty to become a lawyer and a public servant.
Charina and her dad
Aumentado served his constituents "so humbly yet so honorably," said Cebu Rep. Eduardo Gullas. “Your monument need not be erected in marble for it is enshrined in the heart of each and every Boholano,” he said.
Meanwhile, Aumentado’s daughter, Charina, described the late lawmaker as “my hero, my inspiration, my father.”
“We commemorate Jesus birth last night as it marked the day we came into redemption. Last night, our dearest papa Rico joins our creator. The saddest Christmas for us , his beloved family, as he left coincidentally as Jesus came. Papa Erico wants us to celebrate instead of mourning every time we remember the time he left for this world. Papa, go ahead in your journey.... Yet alone ....but the lives you've touched and the inspirational life you've lived will forever be remembered. We love you always, We will miss you very much...” she posted on Facebook.
Aumentado’s son, Erico Angelo, also shared his thoughts about his father.  “He was a self made man. He owes his success to God only who gave him his intellect. A gift God took last until his last breath. With no voice to speak, he managed to show how important his work is... A painful sight only his family witnessed. His dedication to serve the people was his life. Public service is not a position for him... It was his vocation and calling. His presence is strong even without words. His face radiates with inner goodness. His body became weak and frail... But his mind remains vibrant and brilliant. A great mind with a good heart. Forever he will be missed.., a void never will be replaced.. But heaven is your place now. Rest well papa.. Your legacy will remain unsurpassed! PAPA ERICO I LOVE YOU...”
The provincial government of Bohol has declared a period of mourning and hoisting of national and provincial flags at half mast in honor of Aumentado starting Wednesday until his burial day on Jan. 5, 2013.
Shortly after the news broke, people also expressed their condolences on the death of Aumentado on the social networking site. His work and legacy were remembered by many people.

Judith Uy-Sumatra- I was terribly shocked to hear that Cong. Erico Boyles Aumentado passed away last night. His 9-year performance as governor of Bohol was a trail-blazer especially in terms of poverty reduction and peace development. Condolence to Ma'am Grenie and family! Christmas will never be the same again.
Aumentado's remains arrive in Tagbilaran City, Dec. 29
Glenda Ceniza Maniwang- I have my own personal encounters with Cong. Erico, while we were working with people’s organizations. Most of these groups we have met referred to him as the “Father of Cooperatives” here in Bohol. He championed the needs of the masses. He provided them irrigation dams where it is needed and we owe to him the cemented roads all around Bohol, hence the slogan, “Basta Aumentado, ang calzada cementado.” This project has contributed mainly to the rise of tourism activities in Bohol. My father & mother, who are very good friends of Cong. Erico, told us stories of the many times that Cong. Erico upheld what was for the common good. His integrity, according to my father, is something that we should emulate. I would say, he was not just a politician, but a statesman to the highest degree.
Roger Gee Gatal- Our Deepest Condolonces to you and your Family.. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers...
In Ubay, Bohol
Mellanie Wallace- A very sad day for us boholanos.. RIP, Erico Boyles Aumentado, you were truly a blessing to our community. You and the deeds you did for us will NEVER be forgotten.
Raul Phillip Orimaco Gatal- One of the greatest leaders that Bohol has ever produced has already gone to the Great Beyond leaving behind not only a grieving family but also legions of paisanos that mourn his untimely demise. He will be remembered for the legacy of good governance, tangible projects and a better and progressive Bohol. May we all set aside our politics and differences for the meantime and reach out to the Aumentado family on their hour of bereavement.
Reuben J. Gulle-My deepest sympathy to the family of my former "boss", CONG. ERICO B. AUMENTADO, whose untimely demise had left a vacuum in the field of development management in the province of Bohol. He was a trailblazer and a visionary whose plans made Bohol to what it is now... a top tourist destination in the Philippines. Thank you Sir Rico for giving me the opportunity to work with you. It was such a wonderful experience working you. Am praying for the eternal repose of your soul. Paalam!
Atty. Julius Gregory Batausa Delgado-In behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Young Boholanos in Metro Manila, Inc., our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of the late Hon. Jennifer Matig-a Alforque- Our deepest condolences to the Aumentado Family Charina Aumentado, Erico Angelo Cabagnot Aumentado, Vanessa Cadorna Aumentado, Joerick Cleavon Aumentado Villamor.. Thank you for the great things that you've done to our province. A great family man indeed, you'll surely be missed by everyone but your legacy will live on... Our prayers and love to the whole family.. HUGS..
Hazel Vallejos-de Asis- There are facts in life which are hard to understand and harder to accept. Although we all know that we can't physically live forever, it still tears our hearts to pieces when someone dear to us leaves ahead. To one of our father figures, to the man who wouldn't make any other appointment on my wedding day, to the man who has mesmerized me with his memory of people's first names (irregardless of social bracket), to the man who finds bliss in just sitting on my parents' rocking chair, to the man who preferred my Mom's cooking rather than the resto, to the man who would suddenly invite me & Man2 to dinner just to chat, to the man who would have connected Jetafe,Bohol & Cordova,Cebu with a bridge, to the man who has done great things for Bohol, NINONG ERICO, may God grant you eternal rest & peace. There are still a lot of "why's" in our mind, and we can only lean on the thought that God has a reason for everything. For you to leave on Christ's birthday may be a good sign that you're in good hands. We will surely miss you but your memory will forever be etched in our hearts & in the hearts of a lot more others whose lives you have touched. We thank God for allowing us to share in your inspiring life.
Marjy Maluenda-Fisher- To one of the greatest man i know Congressman Erico Aumentado, thank you for the service you have given to Bohol, the place i call home. And to the family he left behind Aris Aumentado, from my whole family to yours, our heartfelt condolences, your dad was a great man.
