It's time for us to thank our father, daddy, itay, papa, popsy, tatay, papang, appa, ama, for everything that he does. Like Mother's Day, Father's Day was created to honor, acknowledge and appreciate the important role played by a father in raising the child and consequently building a stronger society.
Benjie Oliva and wife Atty. Joan

Last week, I was watching two great movies about fathers. Bao Shi Fu Zi, a 1983 movie tells about Bao who is honest and works hard so he can provide everything needed for his son to become successful.  In Sleepless in Seattle, Sam Baldwin loses his wife Maggie to cancer. He wants to start anew in Seattle with his son Jonah but continues to grieve. As much as Jonah misses his mother, he calls a radio talk show in an attempt to find his father a partner. Hundreds of women write to Sam after hearing his moving story.

Inspired by these movies, I asked more than two dozen people in Bohol and worldwide this question: What awesome Father's Day moment will you always remember?

Pinay Vera (3rd from left) with dad, brother and Mom
More than half of those asked simply didn’t answer. Here are those who did:

Pinay Vera- My tatay wrote me notes or letters since I was a kid and placed these under my door. Even in college, he would send me letters. I remembered these letters were well-written and very expressive. He would write me when he was happy with me and my grades or achievement, behavior or what not, and he would write me when he was mad at me or disappointed. I guess I inherited my passion for writing from him!

Melchor “Meljun” Daniel Jr- The memory I had with my father that stands out was when he took me to the doctor for my circumcision. Although I knew that it was going to hurt, there was a reassuring comfort that everything would be alright simply because Papa was there with me. Now that I am a father, it's something that I was also able to do some two years ago when it was their time to be "inducted into manhood.'

Melchor Daniel Jr (extreme right) with family
Chandrina Elluiska Schreurs-Wallace-My dad is the first man that I loved and will forever love...when  I was little, the best moment with my dad was when he puts me at his shoulder or he carries me with his feet and walked to every part of the house... when I was a teenager, that special moment was when he cried at my debut and gave me the priceless gift that I could ever received, the contraction graph, this was done when my mom was still pregnant with me.

Chandrina with her father Wil and sister Bianca
Benjie Oliva- My father passed away when I was four years old. So, I have a few memories with him. But one thing I can recall was during his wake at the house of which I thought was my father's birthday party since most of our neighbors and relatives were present. I grew up with my mother and I’m very proud of her who stood as both mother and father for me and my elder brother even during the tough and challenging times of her life. And by October this year, when it will be my time to be a father of a baby girl, I will give and do everything as a good and loving father. Life is too short as they say so I will spend every minute of the day as a father to my future children all the way.

Clement (3rd from left) with his family
Clement Ingking- On the very hour of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that had left us devastated, our mother Erlinda suddenly passed away due to complications from a heart attack. We rushed to the hospital and opened the blanket of the hospital bed and saw our mom, lifeless. The unexpected death of our mom was very painful for us. The break in our parent-child bond reverberated for the rest of our lives especially that I am a Mama’s boy. I, my Papa and my younger brother considers everyday as memorable to cherish for we are slowly coping up and we are strengthening each other to fulfill the grief from the loss of our mom. It's not so common anymore to have a father who's really there, who is the provider for his family, whose predictability creates a sense of stability and security in his household. We are so thankful that we can depend on him.  A real father, responsible, trustworthy and a great role model. We've learned a lot of good things from watching him. We love you Papa Paul!
Mikey Gatal

Mikey Gatal- I will always consider my dad (Rogelio Torralba Gatal) as one of my heroes in life and you know why? He pushed me away out of Bohol in a nice way because he believes that I have the talent and especially the heart to succeed. True enough, I still help my family and do some charity works on the side. He will always be remembered as a very tough guy and friendly at the same time. I guess, I got it from dad, I miss him so much and he must be so proud of me right now.

Loboc Riverwatch earns 2013 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence

Wake-uppers:

Seen: Direk Maryo J. De los Reyes, cast and crew are in Anda, Bohol. Direk Maryo has chosen Anda for his film entry Bamboo Flowers in the forthcoming “Sining Pambansa Film Festival, All-Masters Edition” this September 2013 and hopefully be part of the International Children’s Film Festival. The film will also feature Abatan River, Kawasan Falls of Balilihan, Catigbian’s adventure site, Corella and Loboc Tarsier’s Sanctuary, Chocolate Hills of Carmen, Alicia Bamboo Ensemble and Panglao Island.

Scene: From re-elected 3rd district Congressman Art Yap: Elections always bring out the best and worst in us. This year's elections was no exception. But in the end, no lies nor propaganda, no threat nor violence, no vice nor money can stand against the truth of the people's will. For one day in three years,  the people get to judge their public officials. The people have spoken. Let us honor the people by graciously accepting their choices. Congratulations to all the winning candidates, thank you for all the courageous  and steadfast support to my campaign and my gratitude to the Lord Almighty. God bless our incoming term and God bless Bohol.

Scene: The mass resignation of the staff of the Tubigon Tourism Culture Arts and Heritage Office, organizer of Anyag sa Tubigon, Tanda Festival Street Dancing and Sambunot sa Awit when incumbent Mayor  William Jao lost to mayor-elect Marlon Amila. Some sectors call it sour-graping, however, according to VRS, the resignation was to give the new administration a free hand in choosing his staff who will run his programs for the town.

Seen:  Spotted in Bohol is erstwhile commissioner of the National Youth Commission Benjie Oliva. If you think Benjie is missing in action, he is busy traveling the country as personal assistant of Agriculture Sec. Proceso Alcala.

Scene: Thank you to all my family and friends for the overwhelming birthday wishes and cheer yesterday (May 25). I thank you many times over for all the birthday greetings! This very special message from a friend: The way of all peace is to scale the mountain of self. Loving others makes the climb down easier. We see all things darkly until love lights the lamp of the soul.

Loboc Riverwatch has received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honors hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor, and is extended to qualifying businesses worldwide. Only the top-performing 10 percent of businesses listed on TripAdvisor receive this prestigious award.

"The Loboc Riverwatch Floating Resto is honored to be recognized with TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence," said Tessie Labunog-Sumampong. "We strive to offer our customers a memorable dining experience, and this accolade is evidence that our hard work is translating into positive reviews on TripAdvisor."

The Loboc Riverwatch, the Floating Resto to the Stars, is the only restaurant in Bohol which offers authentic Boholano cuisine.

"The Certificate of Excellence award provides top performing establishments around the world the recognition they deserve, based on feedback from those who matter most – their customers," said Christine Petersen, president of TripAdvisor for Business.

To qualify for a Certificate of Excellence, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travelers on TripAdvisor, and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months. Additional criteria include the volume of reviews received within the last 12 months.

GMA Kapuso gives away 2,000 school bags to Bohol
Education, a basic children’s right, comes with a challenge especially in the country’s most desolate areas. Fortunately, GMA Kapuso Foundation, the socio-civic arm of the GMA Network, is reaching out to far-flung communities to touch more Filipino lives.

Last week, I accompanied Amabelle Rusiana,  the regional coordinator of GMA Kapuso Foundation and the DepED people, for the distribution of GMA Kapuso Foundation's bags and school supplies under its project “Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan (First Step towards the Future)".

Some 2,000 children in Grade 1 levels in five district schools of Bohol (Baclayon, Albur, Loay, Lila and Dimiao) have recently received school supplies from GMA Kapuso Foundation.

The children received a package of school supplies packed in a knapsack that contains  five notebooks, two pencils, two pad papers, a sharpener, and a box of crayon.

Evident with the loud expressions of “Thank you” to GMA Kapuso, the children including their parents and the local school authorities were grateful for the initiative hoping that this will encourage the kids to value and pursue education, amidst poverty, to improve their lives.

The company and its foundation will continue to help ensure that many of the Philippines’ next generation achieve a bright future.

Conie Geonzon wants a change in Clarin
Away from the business world, Consuelo “Conie” Geonzon thinks about initiating change.
Consuelo “Conie” Geonzon LPU
But what could a businesswoman like her possibly do? A lot. Conie took the step in promoting Bohol through her Aproniana, a souvenir shop located in Taguihon, Baclayon. Aproniana, known as Bohol’s ultimate souvenir destination, sells Bohol to the world with almost anything you want so you can remember the memories you’ve spent in Bohol.
Conie is running for councilor in her hometown Clarin under the team Uswag Clarin.
“We will establish a new generation of politicians. We need a new direction – and that requires a new set of leaders,” Conie replied when asked why.
Those running under the Uswag Clarin are mostly neophytes.
“We are neophytes in politics but our group is composed of CPA, businessmen, police officer, doctor, nurse and a teacher.” She also finds the tourism in Clarin should be improved.
“Our group Uswag Clarin made a sacred covenant to make a transparent government. We don't make promises we can't keep.”
But will Conie turn her back on business if and when she becomes councilor?
“No. I will remain helping the tourism industry of Bohol and at the same time helping my hometown.”
..with her Uswag Clarin teammates - LPU
Conie , together with Engr. Eugine Ibarra (who’s running for Mayor), Jojo Carcallas (who’s running for Vice Mayor), (councilors to-be) Dr. Rick Amarille, Norie Maglajos, Engr. Nerio Bitol, Prony Dagat, SPO2 Miguel Montuya, Abby Juanich and Gerwel Bautista, plan to improve Clarin.

Miniature Christmas Village attracts visitors
The home of Mrs. Mila Lim has been attracting visitors this Yule time because of its decorations and miniature Christmas village, a modern marvel of our times.
Envisioned as a village symbolizing the joyous blessings and atmosphere of the Christmas Season, Mrs. Lim finished decorating her Christmas Village, the only in Bohol, last October.
Mrs. Mila Lim
Mrs. Lim started her Christmas Village in 2008 for the pleasure of her own family and has since increased her collection of miniature Christmas houses and objects. Her creation was so highly appreciated by her family and friends who would come to enjoy the wonderful displays during Christmas time.
Her eye-catching Christmas Village continues to grow and glow as she adds new features of miniature houses and other attractions from her travels here and abroad (Israel, Australia, Hongkong and China).
This year, Mrs. Lim has made many renovations in the displays, but their emphasis on family tradition and holiday celebration remains unchanged.

“It takes a lot of work to continue the Christmas Village," says Mrs. Lim “But it gives me satisfaction because the essence of Christmas is the joy it brings to people," she adds.
