Bohol’s Biggest Stories of 2012

From Vanity Salinana’s winning to the death of Rep. Erico Aumentado, 2012 was dominated by the many happenings of famous people in Bohol.

Some stories were happy ones; others, not so much. As we observed, 2012 was chock full of drama, major comebacks, career high notes, and some sad stuff too.

But no matter what went down over the last 12 months, we watched and followed our favorite people thru radio, newspapers and the social media as the good, the bad and the OMG took over the headlines.

What were the most memorable moments of 2012?

Bared has relive them all.

HEY SEXY LADY
2012 saw the birth of beauty queens in the province.

Idy Caseñas Cagas was crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo on July 20. Cagas is the fifth Jagnaanon to win the Miss Bohol Sandugo title making Jagna as the only town in Bohol that has the most number of Miss Bohol Sandugo winners. (Sorry, Tubigon!)

Bohol’s Queen of Tourism Rose Soy was the Queen of Santacruzan 2012, Candy Cumayas was the Reyna Elena 2012.

Jade Nica Obedencio was crowned Miss Ubi Festival Queen 2012; Mary Ebone Calimbayan Cimafranca was chosen Miss Teen Tagbilaran 2012 and Karen Morfreux  was crowned Miss Teen Earth 2012 and Miss Silka Bohol 2012.

Mariecris Evardo was crowned Anyag sa Tubigon 2012. She almost won the Miss Bohol Sandugo 2012 crown.  Her townmate, Thea Rose Rizaldo, won the Miss Teen Bohol2012 title.

We also witnessed Miss Ubay 2007 Karen Gallman and Miss Tagbilaran 2010 and Miss Bohol Sandugo 2010 1st runner-up Fer Mary Baliquig in the Bb. Pilipinas 2012. Baliquig also tried her luck in 2012 Miss World-Philippines.

Another Boholana Zeneline Ancog Bulalaque joined the Miss Philippines Earth 2012 representing Batuan.

It was also a good year for Vanity Kintanar Salinana who won the Queen of Cebu Universe 2012, the pageant for Alternatives held on November 9. Before winning Queen of Cebu, Vanity won the Carnival Queen of Mandaue 2010 and Bb. Gay Pilipinas Region VII in 2011.  She made history for Bohol after becoming the very first Boholana transgender to be crowned Queen of Cebu.

FAMOUS CELEB VISITS OF 2012
Simon Clive Barbon Greatwich, the midfielder of the Philippine Football Team, visited Bohol. Simon’s mother, Carol, hails from Tagbuane, Alburquerquel.

Richard Gutierrez was spotted in Bohol on Valentine’s Day. Richard was not dating someone but he was with the kids of Guiwanon Elementary School in Baclayon (hometown of actor Cesar Montano) who were the recipients of the Bikes for the World. Richard also visited Pamilacan Island. He also attended the Valentine programs of Laya Elementary School and Baclayon Central Elementary School.

The Queen of Talk Show Kris Aquino visited Bohol for the second time to shoot an episode for Kris TV show on ABS-CBN.

Filipino YouTube sensation Mikey Bustos, the comedic talent behind a series of wacky Filipino "language tutorials" that have gone viral online attracting millions — and counting, was spotted in Bohol to make his funny video of “Bohol and the All-knowing Tarsiers.”

Actor Aga Muhlach was in Bohol to shoot an episode about Bohol for his travel-adventure show Pinoy Explorer on TV5. Days after, matinee idol/TV host Drew Arellano was spotted in Bohol for his weekend adventure on GMANewsTV’s Weekend Getaway. The Bohol visit was the nth time for Drew.

Politicians who visited Bohol in 2012 Pres. Noynoy Aquino, Vice President Jejomar Binay, Sen. Chiz Escudero, Manong Maceda, Rep. Milagros “Mitos” Magsaysay, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito, former Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chair Grace Poe -Llamanzares  and Aurora Rep. Edgardo “Sonny” Angara.

Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup got an invitation to become the guest speaker of the University of Bohol.  “Sana mapreserve ang natural beauty ng Bohol. Once na nasira yun mahirap na ibalik. It’s more fun in Bohol,” Shamcey said.

Also spotted in Bohol were Ruffa Gutierrez, Tim Yap, Alice Dixson, Cristalle Belo-Henares, Ryan Bang and Cory Quirino.

MEMORABLE CONCERTS OF 2012
Vice Ganda tickled our funny bones in a Valentine concert on Feb. 11. A Night with Christian Bautista on April 28 also amazed the crowd.

The unique concert event of celebrated folk-rock artist Joey Ayala (with his band Ang Bagong Lumad) and Pinoy pop icon Lolita Carbon of the band ASIN was held in Danao EcoPark on July 8.

Music-lovers also watched balladeer Basil Valdez who sang those oldies but goodies from the 60s and 70s that we loved so much...beautiful memories are made of them.

"Les Miserables," the infamous novel authored by French writer Victor Hugo, was staged in Bohol in July 2012.

Gospel singer Don Moen also brought the kingdom of God to Bohol with songs of praise and worship on Nov. 10. The concert was part of his three-day tour “God Will Make A Way! Philippine Tour 2012.”  Don Moen interpreted closely the words of the Bible in God Will Make A Way, Thank You, Lord, God Is   Good All The Time and Give Thanks.

THE BIGGEST FEUDS OF 2012
The gloves were off! Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Lim and Carmen Mayor Che Toribio –delos Reyes vs. Gov. Edgar Chatto, Rep. Rene Relampagos and PA Ae Damalerio. Need I say more?

Tensions between Panglao Vice Mayor Evangeline Lazaro and Panglao Mayor Dodong Alcala exploded in the last quarter of the year.

The network war, in case you haven’t noticed, was getting uglier and uglier, too.

The cattiest of fights to the lowest of blows of these scrappy famous would continue this election time.

THE HOTTEST GUYS OF 2012
Marc Joseph Batoy made us swoon in 2012! Not only was he named Mr. Bohol Island State University (BISU) 2012, Mr. Teen Bohol 2012 1st runner up, Mr. Olive C 2012 and Mr. Regional SCUAA 2012! Outstanding student, bromantical buddy, sexy star: Marc’s the total package in 2012!

While Marc Batoy took the title for Mr. SCUAA this year, Adryan Mila, claimed 2012's Mr Teen Bohol despite unpopular promotions of the pageant.

Clement Paulinel Lofranco Ingking had a lot to thank God for in 2012. Even though he lost out to Marc as Mr Olive and Mr Teen and Mr. BISU2012, we still think Clement had a super-sexy year.

ALMOST… AND BIG BREAK OF 2012
Aspiring musical sensation Sherwin “Paeng” Cabilan Rosco of Tubigon made it to the X-Factor Philippines. Boholana diva Eva Gulle- De los Santos, 50, also joined the X-Factor Philippines. They failed to reach the finals.

Mitch Capili (Michelle Angelu Kapirig in real life) was among the Top 20 in GMA-7's Protégé: The Battle For the Big Artista Break. She didn’t continue her journey for the big artista break as she was eliminated in Protégé First Elimination Night.

Lukas Enrique Magallano, the son of Luther Magallano of Cortes and nephew of Dr. Luisito Magallano, was hailed as the winner of the Promil Pre-School I-Shine Talent Camp in the finals on July 28 on ABS-CBN. Lukas bested 11 other talented kids for the title of first "Grand I-Shiner." Aside from scoring a contract with ABS-CBN's talent management firm Star Magic, Magallano also won P500,000, and a one-year supply of Promil Pre-School.

STORIES THAT TOUCHED US IN 2012
We were touched of the baby girl thought to be just a few hours old when she was found early morning in Albur town abandoned in a bag.

And so, after all the twists and turns, the action, drama, romance, suspense, etc, Prony, the longest and biggest python in captivity, found a new home in Barangay Laya, Baclayon last March 7. Her “twin” sister, Paloma, is still performing her deadly acrobatic moves and kagwang style.

Thirty-five elementary students of Totolan Elem. School in Dauis were hospitalized for food poisoning after eating the fruit of 'tuba-tuba' on June 8. Also, two died and one hospitalized for eating popper fish or  butete in Mabini.

When nature strikes… Typhoon Gener claimed the lives of couple Jury and Mylene Betaganzo  of Buenavista on August 1.  The couple were on board passenger motorcycle somewhere in Getafe when hit by the falling coconut tree which also hurt its driver and the couple’s two-year-old son. They died on the spot.

Several rice fields had dried up after months of no rain in Bohol, considered the food basket of Central Visayas.  Water level in a major dam in Pilar town had reached critically low levels. Cloud seeding operations were done to save the farms.

At least 85 houses and 13 motorized outrigger boats called pumpboats were damaged when a tornado struck four coastal villages in the Jagna.

Typhoon Pablo ravaged 8 fishing vessels and left one dead. Hundreds were forcibly evacuated in several areas of Bohol.

SCANDALS OF 2012
2012 was Bohol’s gas price problem. It was reported that there was a significant discrepancy in oil prices in the province when compared with those of neighboring regions and other areas in Central Visayas.  Governor Edgar Chatto appealed for conscience and corporate social responsibility from the three major fuel companies, after a heated forum failed to settle the needed cheaper fuel prices in Bohol.

Panglao was shattered with a gruesome incident involving the rape-slay of a resort cashier on Jan. 10. Tagged as suspect in the grim rape-slay was Erwin Escomo. He confessed he was “out of his mind” when he raped and then killed Josephine Micla. Panglao Mayor Benedicto Alcala reacted furiously as he ordered Panglao policemen to take the island’s drug problem seriously.

Armed with guns, inmates Exequiel Aniscal, Brian Ceniza and Mario Llaya escaped from Bohol District Jail on May 17. Five days after the manhunt operation, Ceniza and LLaya were in an alleged encounter with police authorities in Ubay town.

Actor and businessman Mandy Ochoa lost his wallet and cellular phone while going through the Tagbilaran Airport’s X-ray machine. The airport terminal building had no CCTV cameras.

Two Boholanos who wanted to increase the size of their booties made it on TV when their buttocks got infected following injections of collagen. They sought the help of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7) to trap the fake doctor.  After that incident, health authorities had issued a warning against using the services of unlicensed cosmetic surgeons or practitioners, saying consequences could be fatal.

Louie Digal vs. Facebook Trolls. Loboc Vice Mayor Louie Digal fell victim to internet pranksters on Wednesday, Nov. 21, when his Facebook account was hacked. A message promoting “political and venomous announcements” popped up on the mayoralty candidate’s page, and Digal was unimpressed that his account had been illegally accessed.

The Ombudsman suspended Cortes Mayor Apolinaria “Jasmine” Balistoy for six months without pay as a result of an anti-graft case that reached all the way to the Sandiganbayan filed by Vice-Mayor Danilo Montero.

Anti-epal Congresswoman, stage actress and political/social activist Mae Paner aka Juana Change was reacting on the tarpaulins of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Bohol federation president Jethro Nathaniel Lim Imboy sprawling along the city’s main thoroughfares. The original tarps had the faces of Juana Change and other two speakers with Bamboo as the event entertainer for SK Convention on Sept. 15-16. Juana Change, who is known for her anti-epal campaign, ordered the organizers to remove the “epal” tarps. The organizers replaced the tarps and removed Juana Change as one of the speakers. The incensed Juana Change mentioned the incident on Morning at ANC and reported on GMA News.

GOOD NEWS OF 2012
Panglao Island has been named as one of the Best Secret Beaches on Earth by Travel+Leisure Magazine in its March 2012 issue. It also named Ananyana Beach Resort and Spa as one of the Best Affordable Beach Resorts occupying a prime spot on the beachfront serving Filipino-Mediterranean dishes like the penne with pork adobo.

The short film, Bells Ring Mr. King, directed by Ted Ramasola, was one of the nominees for best short film in the 35th Gawad Urian Awards organized by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP), an organization of respected film critics.

Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community elected Bohol's most popular make-up artist and hairstylist Tracy Remolador Torres as president of the Bohol United Artists Association.

Thousands of devotees converged to pay homage to the sacred image of St. Pedro Calungsod, the second Filipino saint in Bohol on November 25, as part of the “Duaw Nasud” for Visayas and Mindanao.

The miniature Christmas Village of Mila Lim fascinated visitors and friends during the holidays. The Loboc town plaza came alive with a dancing lights and vibrant Christmas parols. Christmas lights adorned the facade of the centuries-old Loboc Church. In Sierra-Bullones, the giant Santa Claus, which measures 25 feet high, colored the Yuletide Season! The Pasko sa Plaza which featured Boholano talents attracted visitors for years.

FAMOUS FAREWELLS of 2012
Some of our (favorite) Boholanos passed away in 2012-- but left their mark on the world. They are gone but not forgotten.

In 2012, the province lost an incredible beauty queen and leader. Miss  Bohol Sandugo 1955 and former Mayor of Maribojoc Paula Raagas -Valles  passed away on July 8, 2012, aged 90.

The sudden death of eventologist and Alona's darling Uly Dolojol on Sept. 23, shocked friends all over Bohol. The outpouring of grief was immediate, with one common refrain: Alona Beach had lost one of its greatest persons.

Mrs. Asuncion Mira, trustee and treasurer of the University of Bohol (UB) passed away on Feb. 9.

Former city mayor of Tagbilaran Jose Maria Rocha passed away on July 4. He was 91. Rocha served as city mayor twice, first in 1980 to 1986 then in 1992 to 1995. He was also a city councilor and likewise served as executive secretary to then President Carlos P. Garcia.

The province was taken aback when news of Boholano great leader Erico Aumentado’s death surfaced at just 72.  According to Boy Pernia, the family’s spokesperson, Aumentado died on Dec. 25.  He was surrounded by family when he passed away in Makati. Boholanos worldwide were united in mourning after the passing of Aumentado. In a statement, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. called Aumentado an “exemplary public servant.” “He [Aumentado] deserves full credit for transforming Bohol into one of the most progressive, peaceful and richest provinces today. He was truly an outstanding solon -- learned, dedicated, and principled,” Belmonte said.  Also, “Erico Aumentado” was trending on Yahoo Philippines.

The 'Cobra Walk' and Wishlist

The ‘cobra walk’ in Miss U 2012
My own ‘recycled’ Wishlist
Costume change: Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon went from sexy to elegant as she switched from the swimsuit portion of the night to the evening gown competition. Courtesy: Mikey Gatal
The Philippines nearly had another Miss Universe.
Miss USA Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe 2012, beating out beauties from around the world to claim the coveted title.
Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon came second and Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero was third.
Culpo’s victory came as a big surprise as a majority of viewers, mostly Filipinos, were expecting Tugonon to win the crown.
Culpo brought the Miss Universe crown back to the United States for the first time in more than a decade, while Tugonon duplicated Miriam Quiambao's first runner-up finish in 1999. The Philippines has won the Miss U twice with Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.

Mikey Gatal
Renowned photographer Nigel Barker asked Tugonon the following question: "As a global ambassador, do you think speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe?"

She replied, "I don't think speaking English is about speaking a specific language. Being Miss Universe is about being able to influence and inspire people, regardless of language. It's about being able to influence and inspire other people. If you have a heart to serve and a strong mind to show people, then you can be Miss Universe."
Tugonon also displayed her piercing eyes and her signature "Cobra Walk," a type of strut similar to the "tsunami walk" popularized by 2011 Miss Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup.
Some Filipinos went to the Sin City to support Tugonon including US-based Boholano socialite Mikey Gatal who covered the event for his website. As a Pinoy veteran beauty pageant watcher, Mikey was also interviewed by GMA News and Telemundo. Another Boholano director RD Alba also covered the Miss U.
The following letter from Mikey Gatal says it all:
Hi Leo,
First of all, I would like to thank you for the trust and giving me a chance to share with you my experiences inside Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada USA where the Miss Universe beauty pageant took place.
I arrived in Vegas on Monday afternoon, two days before the actual finals night, upon arrival, I already met some of the important people behind this event, some were Miss Teen Bahamas Shanae Strachangets, the winner in 2008, and challenged her to give a sample of her catwalk skills because Miss Philippines has a "Cobra Walk" and she did in front of some passersby when we bumped each other while shopping at Aldo Store.
Miss Teen USA 2012 Logan West is a trooper, I asked her if she is a contestant at first because she wasn't wearing a sash in one of the sections of the lobby and she gladly told me, "I am Miss Teen USA"! Before our photo shoot, the mom reminder her. "wear your sash" :)
As the days go by, I finally met former beauty queens Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, the mother of Janine Tugonon and mother of Shamcey Supsup, I  am forever thankful to them for letting me get inside a pass as one of the relatives of Miss Philippines! because of that pass, you can have access to all candidates during their rehearsals and meals.
Literally, they were all over the place and I was overwhelmed of their beauties in person, Miss Philippines' so regal and look like they were living dolls especially Miss Georgia, Miss Australia, Miss Brazil, Miss Indonesia, Miss Vietnam, Miss Guyana, Miss India, Miss Venezuela and Miss USA and many more!
I talked to Janine's mom, Tess, a day before the pageant and she said that she won’t change her gown what she wore during the preliminaries and she would still used it during the finals. The powder blue evening gown created by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza was very elegant in person and seeing it live was more pleasant to see than on TV especially knows how to carry it. She was not overpowered by the gown but, she overpowered the gown that's why she looks so queenly and a real winner to many.
The atmosphere during the pageant night was awesome and at the same time, everyone's nervous every time a candidate was being called and so on until two were finally left and one of them will be chosen to be the new Miss Universe. Everyone stood up before a name was called and I really heard from most of the audience, shouting Miss Philippines name because she gave a convincing answer but Miss USA won and stunned everyone.
We continued to talked about it at the lobby for several hours and waited for the contestants to come out and still debated of what really happened out there, so many good feed backs for Miss Philippines, some other nationalities would congratulate us too and we cannot just stop talking about it. Very proud of Janine Mari Tugonon!
I met the ever beautiful up Sushmita Sen during the Miss Universe after party together with Ohio, Miss Utah, Miss Wyoming and jokingly said, we are here to support Miss USA who defeated us during our pageant Ha !Ha! Ha!
Anyways,  I really have to go for I am still catching up a flight to go back to LA and I hope you continue to give us more updates and more power to you Leo Udtohan and GMA7 for the opportunity, until next time!

You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout, I'm telling you why: Santa Claus is coming to town. Yes, it's only two days before Christmas and I’d like to make a wishlist not only for myself, but for my friends on the social spotlight and favorite who’s who.
My (recycled) wishlist is not about bundles of books, DVD sets, or a tropical vacation but from my
heart's desire and let's see if we can make a few Christmas dreams come true.
I am asking the big guy to deliver the gifts before he leaves the North Pole and makes his rounds. Hoh! Hoh! Hoh!

Boholana beauty queen achiever and other tidbits

Wake-uppers:
Dr. Tayag
Seen: Department of Health (DOH) Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag was spotted in Bohol last Wednesday, Oct. 10. Tayag was the speaker of University of Bohol’s Diamond 2013 staff development program. According to John Edgar Tiu, the organizer of the event, there was a “dance for health program” number with Doc Tayag.

Scene: President Aquino's younger cousin and former Youth Commissioner (NYC) and founder of Happinoy, a cooperative for small-medium investors and businesses Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV visited Bohol last Oct. 10. Bam attended the Getafe Foundation Day celebration with reelectionist Gov. Edgar Chatto. Accompanied by former NYC commissioner and now DAR consultant Benjie Oliva and provincial administrator Ae Damalerio, Bam met the press people at Metro Center Hotel. He twitted: “You have everything in Bohol - beach, mountains, adventure, nature, seafood and most of all, kind, accommodating and hospitable Pinoys!”

Scene: A daughter of a local chief executive was bloodied and bruised after allegedly being beaten up by ex-boyfriend. According to VRS, there are angry welts on the daughter’s forehead over both brows, grazing to one cheek, cuts to her chin, swellings around her eyes and marks on her nose and lips. The incident happened last Thursday when the daughter accidentally met the ex-bf. The daughter didn't report the incident to the police but asked her friends instead. Her whole family didn't know about the incident.

Scene: The campaign trail is on! Ask politicians what is it that they cannot live without? And they might tell you that, yes, it’s a bottle of alcohol. The handwash habit is popular with this rising politician which his factotum (read: alalay) has alcohol every time he’s on the campaign trail shaking hands with people. “Lami kaayo siya mo-smile namo,” complained a voter (not anymore!), “pero mutalikod na dayun pangayo sa alcohol kay manghugas sa iyang kamot.” Clue? There are two “l’s,” two “e’s” and this politician has “mysophobia” ever since. Then, another politician is taking no chances as she washes her mitts with sanitizer after shaking hands with people. This politician is now busy campaigning and attending purok-purok tapok. But once she got back to her car her alalay squeezed a dollop of gel on to her hands to kill off any unwanted germs and bugs. A voter heard her saying, "Baho kaayo ang mga tawo,ew...hugaw jud." Now, the voter won't vote for her in 2013 elections. "What an insult! Ew pud siya noh!" Germs, germs, germs!

Scene: Correction please! Brigadier General Joseph Sevilla is not running for governor as reported by Bared last week. He is running for Bohol vice governor. No, Inabanga Mayor Jono Jumamoy is not running for re-election in next year’s elections. According to VRS, he has plans to stay in Australia. Missed out in Bared’s list of political luminaries running were provincial board member Roygie Jumamoy for mayor of Inabanga against Ipafanio Muñises, Tagbilaran City Poblacion 1 Barangay Chairman Arlene Karaan for board member of the first district of Bohol,  Buenavista Mayor Ronald Lowell Tirol for reelection against Alfonso “Boy” del Rosario, Jagna Mayor Fortunato Abrenilla for reelection against Vice Mayor Exuperio Lloren, Maribojoc Mayor Leoncio Evasco for reelection against former provincial board member Jose Veloso (for the second time) and Panglao Mayor Benedicto Alcala for reelection against Vice Mayor Evangeline Lazaro and former councilor Leonila Montero.

Being Miss Bohol Sandugo truly meant being more than just a beauty queen. It declared having both brains and beauty— that is to say good looks mixed with a sophisticated mind—so one could carry oneself with exemplary grace and meaningful impact in the province.

At the eve of their crowning itself, the winners already had gone very far in their youth proving that youth like beauty knows no age. They have gone to become the best they could be in their chosen fields.
Celevel Ranoco

Case in point: Miss Bohol Sandugo 1992 Celevel Ranoco.

Anyway, Bohol’s seasoned host (and now a blogger) Raul Gatal has to share about Celevel.

Jagna set an unprecedented feat in 1992 when its bet Celevel Ranoco won for the town its third consecutive Miss Bohol Sandugo title. The first two were Tiffany Yap 1990 and Recelle Adlaon 1991. Until now, the record has been unbeaten. Tubigon  which won the crown twice with back-to-back victories in 2010 and 2011 almost tied with Jagna this year with its 1st runner up placement to the winner who by a twist of fate also comes from Jagna

Back in the 1992 edition of Miss Bohol Sandugo, Celevel with her sultry looks and morena complexion was not the pre- pageant favorite but on that fateful night, the moment she strutted her stuff, sashayed onstage and spoke her mind and heart out, everyone including the members of the Panel of Judges were simply mesmerized with her.

She was the picture of the modern and contemporary Boholana; confident and witty yet grounded and well- mannered

She is making waves in the world of advertising, conquering new horizons and daring to go where only a few of her paisanos and is now reaping the just rewards for her ground- breaking and innovative marketing savvy with her present position as the General Manager at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising - Singapore

She is described as a top advertising executive who comes with years of international brand management and account handling experience and is equally armed with senior marketing experience from the client land.

Furthermore, she embraces the opportunity to bring account leadership and client business to a whole new level.

From her UP Sigma Delta Phi sorority, I came across this news item written by Madi Belen 08:

“CELEVEL RANOCO- BUTLER IS SAATCHI SINGAPORE’S GENERAL MANAGER

Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore promoted senior brand director, Celevel Ranoco-Butler ’93, to the post of Singapore general manager in 2010, filling a role that had been vacant for nine months after Robbie Bempasciuto’s departure in 2009. Celevel oversees the office’s daily operations and reports to Dean Taylor, CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore and Malaysia.Prior to her appointment as general manager,

Celevel was the Regional Brand Director at Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore. Her work involved managing the high-profile and first global Sony Ericsson campaign and launching impressive 7 x 360 degrees campaigns for brands like premium home beer brand, Tiger.

Her previous work experience has also included positions with O2 Asia & ME, Y&R Singapore, M&C Saatchi, and 141 Worldwide and Bates Advertising.Of her work in Saatchi, Celevel says that she “enjoys the high energy agency life and thrives when things get mad busy.

Scene: Bohol third district Rep. Arthur Yap has made to good use his diplomatic experience in seeking donations from abroad in his effort to continuously provide assistance for the needs and development of the towns in his district.

Recently, Rep. Yap has secured five firetrucks and three ambulances from Japan, which will be donated to some towns in the third district to enhance the capability of the towns in responding to emergencies by utilizing these vehicles.

Last Monday, Rep. Yap turned-over one fire truck he secured from Ibaraki Prefectural Assembly of Shimotsuma City to LGU Loay attended by the officials of Shimotsuma City.

“We are very thankful to Rep. Arthur Yap and our Japanese friends for donating the fire truck. This will be a big help to our firemen,” said Mayor Rosemarie Imboy.

Rep. Yap in his speech said that “with this firetruck, I believe that the local authorities will be able to attend to emergencies more effectively, save more lives and better prevent the destruction of properties and livelihoods, and thus enhance the human security of the local people.”

Said Masuda Seigo, chairman of Shimotsuma City Council: “The city of Shimotsuma has been active in keeping the population safe from fire and this truck has been used in doing so... we would like the Loay municipality to receive the truck because this truck has been of service to Shimotsuma."

Scene: Thousands of job seekers have been provided job referrals and employment placement assistance to different job sites locally and overseas, thanks to the Bohol Employment and Placement Office (BEPO).

Tagaan
Last week, BEPO had facilitated the mobile services of national agencies as part of their regular programs.  National agencies which do not have full service offices in Bohol like PRC, NSO, LTFRB and DFA are invited to conduct mobile services in the province on a regular basis.  Over the years, thousands of clients mostly job seekers, public school teachers and other professionals have benefited the Mobile Services with the convenience of transacting with those agencies right here in the province.

“It’s bringing government services closer to the people," says  Romy Tagaan, head of BEPO. He is also supported by Ma. Vilma Yorong, PESO manager,  Erlie Heramis, mobile services coordinator, Gay Manolong and Villa Lopena, admin officers, Reinerio Augusto Real, consultant on OFW matters, Robert Cister, STARS project coordinator and a team of job order workers.

It was her grandma, the late Petra Caseñas, who told her to join Miss Bohol Sandugo.

“My secret in sustaining my poise and grace under pressure especially during Q and A is never failing to ask God’s enlightenment and guidance,” said Cagas.

Cagas is the fifth Jagnaanon to win the Miss Bohol Sandugo title. The town's entries successively triumphed from 1990 to 1992: Tiffany Yap (1990), Ma. Recelle Adlaon (1991) and Celevel Ranoco (1992). Also in 2003, Fatima Liora Lloren Rana was crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo.

All things bright and beautiful for new Anyag

Wake-uppers:

Scene: Despite wishes that a female would finally be crowned "American Idol" after five years of male domination, Jessica Sanchez came in second place when Phillip Phillips was pronounced the winner. Jessica Sanchez said, "I was really fighting for the girls in this round. the only reason i wanted to win was because i want to break the whole thing with the guys winning."

Soy, Queen for the nth time
Scene: Bohol’s Queen of Tourism Rose Soy is the Queen of Santacruzan 2012. Santacruzan is a religious parade that re-enacts the finding of the cross of St. Helena in Cavalry 300 years after death of Jesus Christ.

This year’s Santacruzan organized by the Rotary Club of Tagbilaran had military men who were assigned to hand-carry the bamboo arches decked with color-themed flowers.

During the procession, there were Methuselah (the oldest person whose age is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. He reminds people that all that glitters may end up like dust) and little angels.

It was also a harvest of blooms and beautiful ladies as they portrayed Reyna Mora (represents the religion before Christianity or she is a female Muslim), Reyna Fe (symbolizes virtue of faith and she carries a cross), Reyna Esperanza (symbolizes virtue of hope and she carries an anchor), Reyna Esther (she carries a scepter. She represents the biblical Jewish who saved her countrymen), Veronica (the woman who wiped the face of Jesus. She carries bandana with the imprinted face of Jesus), Tres Marias (Mary of Magdala, she carries a bottle of perfume. Mary Mother of Christ, she carries a handkerchief. Mary Mother of James, she carries a bottle of oil), girl scouts who were the Ave Maria (8 girls each one carrying a letter to spell out AVE MARIA), Rosa Mystica (she carries a bouquet of roses), Queen of Flowers (she carries a bouquet of flowers) and Reyna Elena (the legendary founder of the Holy Cross. She carries a small cross and escorted by her son, Constantine) portrayed by Miss Bohol International 2012 Mary Ebone Calimbayan Cimafranca.

Some Rotarians who were present during the parade were City councilor Butchie Zamora, Joy Suarez, Louella Bantol, Alex Bongawan, absent were Rotarians Nila Montero and Raul Gatal.

Seen: Award-winning Boholano director Maryo J. de los Reyes is in Bohol.

Scene:  Looks like love is in the air in Bohol these days.  Some balikbayans who attended the recently concluded Tigum Bol-anon sa Tibuok Kalibutan (TBTK) 2012 are deciding to take the plunge and get engaged. Case in point: TBTK president Betty Veloso-Garcia‘s daughter, Maribeth, is now engaged to boyfriend Rob.  “They have been dating for years now. They are engaged and planning a trip down the aisle. He popped the question last week at Gerarda’s during the family gathering,” said the high-profile VRS.  “Na-kilig ang mga witness when Rob gave the engagement ring,” added VRS.

Scene:  The next time there is a big event in town, this special occasion designate (SOD) should know how to behave in public. Case in point: The high-ranking official (HRO) asked SOD to prepare a banquet for the many guests. After half an hour, HRO came back with the guests and to his surprise the food was all gone! “The HRO got blush because the visitors didn’t eat that afternoon because HRO threw a banquet for them,” said the roving VRS. “HRO found out that SOD ordered the men to clean the tables and to bring the foods, er, bring house,” added VRS.

Seen: Fiel Angeli Araoarao-Gabin is spotted in LA the other day with her daughter AJ Wincielo Johanna visiting the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Fiel accompanied Cielo who is a member of the Philippine team to the International Regions Math League competition in Las Vegas, USA. Likewise, also spotted in London is Trisha Chatto.

Scene: Music-lovers filled the venue last week to watch balladeer Basil Valdez who sang those oldies but goodies from the 60s and 70s that we loved so much...beautiful memories are made of them. Yes, Basil did sing Ngayon at Kailan Man, Kastilyong Buhangin, Kung Akoy's Iiwan Mo, Siya na Ba, Nais Ko, Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka, Hindi Kita Malilimutan, et al. As I’ve been saying, there’s nothing more relaxing and more soothing than listening to old familiar love songs that bring you back to specific periods in your past, evoking memories that you never tire of recalling and reliving. Thanks Bohol Sandugo Foundation, Inc. and K & N Productions!

Evardo
She used to be just a name as far as beauty-watchers were concerned, a member of the town’s Lungsuranon Performing Arts Ensemble (LUPAE), until she joined as one of the candidates of  Anyag sa Tubigon 2012, the most highly produced and the most-expensive production (with an estimated budget of Php 700-800k) beauty pageant in Bohol.

Mariecris Batula Evardo has put a face to the name and what a very beautiful face it is, matched by a beautiful mind and a beautiful body. Will Mariecris the third Anyag to win Miss Bohol Sandugo in a row?

Mariecris is now carrying the customized Anyag crown donated by Manila Vice-Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno" Domagoso. It is worth Php 60k designed by a famous Cebuano jeweler Alpio Saban, (who also designed the crown for the Queen of Cebu World).

We want to show to other towns what honest to goodness showmanship and production is all about,” said Raymond Delgado, erstwhile Tubigon’s Queen of All Media.

“The program was swift and enjoyable,” said Mr. Cebu 2009 Kris Nimrod Cabigas on his Facebook who hosted the event with Bb. Pilipinas- World 2006 Anna Maris Igpit. “I had a great time hosting Anyag sa Tubigon.”

A few days after she was crowned at glittering ceremonies at the Tubigon Cultural Center last May 13 with Star Magic’s Matteo Guidicelli and Rep. Cynthia Villar as special guests, Bared tried to pick this year’s Anyag’s brain by asking her some questions.

Mariecris said that she could make Tubigon a better place to live in by segregating waste, cleaning the environment and planting trees those are just simple yet smartest things in order to save our mother earth. It is one to show the best that we could in providing measures for the next generation.

What is the essence of being an  Anyag sa Tubigon? “An Anyag is not just a title but being one entails a lot of responsibilities and the biggest of all is being an ambassadress of goodwill. A woman who definitely leaves a mark to everyone---a woman with dignity, pride and honor!”

A Capricon (Dec. 25, 1990), Mariecris stands 5’3”, weighs 110 lbs., measures 32-25-36, and wears small-sized shirts and 9-inch shoes.

“Being hospitable, hardworking yet gentle.”

How would you convince people abroad that it’s more fun in Bohol?
“It’s more fun in the Philippines because of the good weather we have plus the beautiful beaches and warm welcoming faces of the Boholanos. It’s more fun in Bohol because of the Boholanos innate faith in God. So whatever happens, God is still in full control.”

What’s your take on the transgender issue (should transgender be allowed to compete in beauty contests for women)?
“We know that we are all created equal and have the right to be respected but I'm against on it because beauty contest are intended for women only.”

If that’s the case, how would you prove that you are more female than transgender?

Who is your role model and why?
“Mother Teresa. She's definitely a woman who exemplified a child like faith and matured obedience to God's will.”

Young people today are liberated and adventurous, willing to try everything. What's your stand on pre-marital sex?
“As a Filipina Catholic, I still believe in the sanctity of marriage. I always value and preserve the purity of my life and my soul.”

Why do you think education is important?
“Education is important because it equips us with all that we need in order to make our dreams come true, it open doors with brilliant career opportunities, it builds in every individual the confidence to face life and accept failure.”

If you were somebody else, who would you like to be and why?
“I always bow down my head to the flexibility, perseverance and understanding of my father. He is my inspiration and a good example to me. He is man with essence, pride and full of love.”

What are your beauty secrets?

And what turns you off?
