Are you ready for the skyscraper size and the jet engine roar of the most incredible waterfalls on the planet? Get wet as Paul Bloomfield of Lonely Planet will tell you the best waterfalls in the world!
Splash out: the world’s most amazing waterfalls
By Paul Bloomfield / Lonely Planet Author
The bigger they are, the harder they fall – feel the power of the planet’s mightiest and most beautiful waterfalls.
1. Victoria Falls, Zambia/Zimbabwe
Explorer David Livingstone could be accused of dampening expectations by naming these falls after England’s doughy queen: dour and staid they’re not. The locals, though, got it spot on, calling the falls Mosi-oa-Tunya – ‘the smoke that thunders’. They’re monstrously loud, and the mist rising as the Zambezi River plunges 108m into the gorge below – over 12,000 cubic metres per second at its heaviest flow – rises in vast clouds. See them from above, from below, from Knife Edge Point, from the Devil’s Pool and from Cataract View, at sunrise and by moonlight – just make sure you see them.
Although flow is greatest between April and June, the best time for sunset photography is arguably October to December, when spray is not too heavy.
2. Niagara Falls, USA/Canada
Let’s hear you shout it: Waterfalls are fun! Louder! And again! It’s fortunate that Niagara is so truly awesome (up to 2800 cubic metres per second awesome, since you ask) or the various and extremely numerous shots of commercialised hokum might overwhelm the sight. But it is, and they don’t – in fact, you’ll probably visit, climb or ride several of the attractions to drink in many facets of the falls. Top of the list has to be a voyage on the Maid of the Mist, the 11th incarnation of the venerable boat that first sailed into the spray in 1846.
Experience the falls on the Maid of the Mist, which sails from April to October.
3. Reichenbach Falls, Switzerland
Elemental, my dear Watson! Set among the deep gorges and rugged peaks of Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland, the Reichenbachfälle seem appropriately dramatic as the backdrop for the final stand of Sherlock Holmes. It was at the roaring 250m-high cascades near Meiringen that the famous detective tussled with his arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty, before both tumbled into the cataract in the 1891 tale The Final Problem. Today, Holmes fans flock to the falls, hiking over the top and down to the plaque marking the ledge where the fictional fight is believed to have been set.
For an atmospheric approach, catch the historic cable railway alongside the falls, running from Willingen mid-May to early October.
4. Kaieteur Falls, Guyana
These remote falls may not be the highest, the heaviest or the most famous – but they’re probably the wildest. Secreted away in the lush interior of Guyana – hardly an over-touristed neighbourhood – the Potaro River plummets 250m from a sandstone plateau. On the trail to the falls you might spot vivid blue butterflies, scarlet birds and the golden dart-poison frog; listen for screeching howler monkeys. Then crawl to the edge of the precipitous overhang, and look down at the roaring curtain, with white-collared swifts darting out from behind the cascade. Now, that’s adrenalin.
The falls can be reached on charter flights from Guyana’s capital, Georgetown, or an epic multi-day overland journey involving minibuses, boats and trekking.
5. Iguazú Falls, Argentina/Brazil
Historically, Argentina and Brazil haven’t always been the best at sharing; in fact, they’re usually up for a scrap, whether it’s over land (Uruguay, say) or soccer honours. But at Iguazú – Iguaçu to the Brazilians – the falls to end all falls are apportioned between them. OK, so the biggest drop is a ‘mere’ 82m – but with a staggering 275 cataracts extending for 2.7km along the Iguazú River, the combined might is jaw-dropping. And deafening: don your waterproofs and stroll to the lookout beneath the Garganta do Diabo (Devil’s Throat) to feel the raw power of the cascades.
Brazil’s Parque Nacional do Iguaçu is open 9am to 5pm, later in summer; Argentina’s Parque Nacional Iguazú is open 8am to 6pm.
6. Détiān Falls, China
What is it about waterfalls that encourages pride that verges on ludicrous? Hence Détiān is proclaimed ‘the world’s second-largest waterfall along a national border’ – the gushing 200m-long stretch of cascades straddles China‘s Guǎngxī province and northern Vietnam (though China gets most of the flow). But you don’t come here for the stats, or the tremendous roar of the rushing water, or for the fun of snapping a photo of yourself at the
border marker. You come because it’s gasp-inducingly beautiful: a verdant vision framed by looming karst outcrops and serene rice paddies.
Midsummer is the best time to appreciate the power of the flow; avoid winter, when the falls are relatively thin streams and fog dominates.
7. Gullfoss, Iceland
Iceland is where good geography teachers go when they die: a geological wonderland, its unique otherworldly landscapes go some way to explaining why most Icelanders believe in elves and goblins. Huge glaciers cover over a tenth of the country, hot water spurts at the eponymous Geysir, technicolour mountains loom in the interior, geothermal springs steam – and waterfalls cascade. Gullfoss is a multi-stepped affair that surges down
into a mighty gash carved into the land; magical when the sun sparks rainbows into life, it’s arguably even more enchanting in winter, when snow glistens and rime coats the rocks all around with a sparkling shell.
Gullfoss is easily reached from Reykjavík on a Golden Circle tour, or by bus with Reykjavík Excursions.
8. Sutherland Falls, New Zealand
Unsurprisingly, in the ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’ it rains a fair bit, especially on the wet west coast of the South Island. After the frequent downpours, New Zealand‘s many cataracts gush even more wildly. Milford Sound, that most photogenic fjord, is renowned for the falls streaming down its sides. The best is on the approach, accessible only by hiking the four-day, 53.5km Milford Track: Sutherland Falls, a 580m-high torrent tumbling from a lake perched on the valley walls. If the sun shines, wonderful; if the rain pours – and it probably will – better still.
Walkers on the Milford Track must book places in huts along the route – see www.doc.govt.nz. From October to April you must hike south to north.
9. Jim Jim Falls, Australia
What’s more of a thrill: floating in a remote plunge pool while gazing up at a 215m-high cascade dashing over rust-red rock cliff s? Or wondering whether a 5m-long prehistoric reptile is about to sink its jagged fangs into your leg? At Jim Jim Falls, deep in Kakadu National Park in Australia’s Northern Territory, you get both: a rufty-tufty 4WD track, then a 1km scramble along a rugged trail, leads to this spectacular outpouring. But before you dive into the swimming hole, so tantalisingly cool in the heat of the outback, ask local advice: saltwater crocodiles have been known to lurk here.
Visitors to Kakadu must pay a A$25 park fee; passes can be bought at centres in Darwin, Katherine and the park itself.
10. Angel Falls, Venezuela
Spoiler alert: romantics, look away right now. The world’s highest single-drop falls (979m high in total, with an 807m plunge) are not named for some celestial being – though the sight of this white ribbon plummeting down the side of the mist-cloaked, flat-topped tepui is almost heavenly. No, the moniker honours aviator Jimmie Angel, who in 1933 became the first to overfly the falls. The local Pemón people are more poetic, recognising the falls’ breathtaking height – so tall that in the dry season much of the water evaporates before reaching the bottom – with the name Kerepakupai merú: ‘falls of the deepest place’.
Several operators in nearby Canaima offer overflights and two- or three-day tours in motorised dugout canoes, usually running from May or June to November.

Woman addicted to eating husband's ashes
Woman addicted to eating husband's ashes
This is another weird story on Yahoo!7 August 9, 2011, 11:18 am
Sometimes it can be hard for people to let go of their deceased loved ones, but one woman is finding it harder than others.
The woman, 26-year-old Casie, is addicted to eating her husband's ashes, and she regularly dips her finger into the urn where her husband's remains reside and takes a lick.
Her husband died of a sudden asthma attack just two months before her strange addiction was revealed by reality TV show My Strange Addiction, the Daily Mail reported.
The first time Casie had a taste of the ashes was when she was transferring them from a cardboard box to her husband's memorial urn.
"Some of it spilled out on my hands. I didn't want to just wipe him away, so I just licked it off my fingers," she told My Strange Addiction.
"And here I am today, almost two months later and I can't stop."
Casie had married her husband in 2009, calling him "all she ever wanted in a man".
She takes the ashes with her everywhere she goes, such as to the cinemas, shops and out to restaurants.
"I take my husband everywhere. To the grocery store, out shopping...When I go grocery shopping, I buy the things that he likes."
She still cooks dinner for him, and does her domestic chores the way he liked them.
"When I cook, I cook what he likes. I don't eat it, but I cook it for him," she said.

Stone Age man created a massive network of underground tunnels
This is intiguing! Got this info from MailOnline.
Going underground: The massive European network of Stone Age tunnels that weaves from Scotland to Turkey
- Evidence of tunnels has been found under hundreds of Neolithic settlements
- That so many tunnels have survived after 12,000 years shows that the original network must have been enormous
Last updated at 3:45 PM on 4th August 2011
Stone Age man created a massive network of underground tunnels criss-crossing Europe from Scotland to Turkey, a new book on the ancient superhighways has claimed.
German archaeologist Dr Heinrich Kusch said evidence of the tunnels has been found under hundreds of Neolithic settlements all over the continent.
In his book - Secrets Of The Underground Door To An Ancient World - he claims the fact that so many have survived after 12,000 years shows that the original tunnel network must have been enormous.
Evidence of Stone Age tunnels has been found under hundreds of Neolithic settlements all over Europe - the fact that so many have survived after 12,000 years shows the original tunnel network must have been huge
'In Bavaria in Germany alone we have found 700metres of these underground tunnel networks. In Styria in Austria we have found 350metres,' he said.
'Across Europe there were thousands of them - from the north in Scotland down to the Mediterranean.
'Most are not much larger than big wormholes - just 70cm wide - just wide enough for a person to wriggle along but nothing else.
'They are interspersed with nooks, at some places it's larger and there is seating, or storage chambers and rooms.
'They do not all link up but taken together it is a massive underground network.'
Not for the claustrophobic: Most of the tunnels are just 70cm wide - just wide enough for a person to slowly wriggle through
Some experts believe the network was a way of protecting man from predators while others believe that some of the linked tunnels were used like motorways are today, for people to travel safely regardless of wars or violence or even weather above ground.
The book notes that chapels were often built by the entrances perhaps because the Church were afraid of the heathen legacy the tunnels might have represented, and wanted to negate their influence.
In some cases writings have been discovered referring to the tunnels seen as a gateway to the underworld.

Did you ever stop to think what controls the universe?
I've found this article from my old folder. I just want to share this to all people out there.
Did you ever stop to think what controls the universe? Did you know there is more water on earth than land? How is the ocean able to stay in its rightful place without flooding the earth? How was water created and from what source? What would be its purpose? We know the moon's gravity controls the tides of the ocean but what force causes the moon to gravitate and control the tides of the ocean and why? For what purpose? Just because? By chance? Why would chance care? How did it come to exist? Who or what was the earth and heavens made for and why?
What controls the laws of gravity? The scientists say some technical theories of this and that and its cause by some physical source and number or chance but how did it come to exist and where? why? Can scientists explain that? When you look at earth and all its creatures, how were they able to come into existence and why? Why are they there? Why are there so many different species? Why are we here? Are we here just by chance or are we here for a reason to be in a relationship with an all powerful highly intelligent spiritual being who created all things for him and by him for his pleasure and glory and which longs to have an intimate and personal relationship with his children.
How were the planets, stars and galaxies in the heavens formed? How did the heavens come to exist? Did something by chance just happen and it came to be? But why? From what matter did it come to exist? What was its purpose to come into existence? Can people see that things like this just don't happen by chance? Why can't people believe that there is a living and powerful spiritual God and that He is the beginning and the end, and a loving, forgiving and longing to have a personal relationship with his children whom he created.
What controls the movement and orbit of the earth and the heavens? Why does the sun rise and set on earth and what would be its purpose? Why is there light? Why is there oxygen? What would be its purpose? What would be the purpose of light? Did light come to be by chance? Did chance create human beings? And if so, why? Does chance see, feel, hear, create, love? How did chance come to exist and why would it care?
When you see the earth God created and its beauty of colors, trees, sky, vegetation, mountains, seas, rivers, lakes, his creatures, and people, isn't that enough to see that it was put there for a reason? That there is a God who created all things by his Word and hand. A God who wants us to enjoy the beauty of his creations whom he loves. If all this was by chance then why? How did chance come to exist? Why would it care? What would be the purpose of chance?
Why do we have emotion? How is it that we are able to feel, think, love and reproduce? Does chance care? Why would it? What would be its purpose of life? Do you think we actually come from monkeys? And if we did, why did we evolve to human beings? Do you think life started by chance by evolving from cells, fish, monkeys, etc. How did life come to exist and why? That is a question scientists cannot answer because they don't know the answer and would rather choose to make up their own ideas and theories of how life and creation came into existence denying there is an all powerful God who created all things in the heavens and the earth and that he is sitting on his throne above watching us and heartbroken that some of his children choose to deny who he really truly is.
How great is God---beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.

A different Princess (The Princess Analiza of Tubigon, Bohol)
Princess Analiza with daughter Batong Orange |
And so Princess Analiza of Tubigon town, her so-called kingdom has become a byword to many of having different personas: a woman with esoteric wisdom and a person having a supernatural power.
Her kingdom is actually at the top of the Ilijan Hill in Ilijan Norte, five kilometers from the Poblacion, a protected municipal park for flora and fauna.
Her journey
We met the princess in August 2002 when we asked her to feature her for national TV networks.
Her domain Ilijan Hill was chosen to become her niche for her to practice her hermit passion.
Halilie Laylah Demeras Analiza, whose real name Lucrecia “Nene” Duterte Aplacador had an epiphany in the late 70s and started to become what she is today. She led a group known as “Subano Group catholic Holy God Spirit (SGHGS)” which had followed her to the hill and has stayed on top since. She and her followers have grown accustomed to the life on top of the hill that her group has yet to return to the lowland for 20 years now.
Ilijan Hill in Tubigon, Bohol, Philippines |
Princess Analiza before she became the leader of the esoteric group married Isaac Aplacador who is with her o n top of hill. They got married before the epiphany that came to a simple lass that changed her life forever.
The couple was blessed with three children: Arcadio, Jose Baniecito and Laoro, all born on top of the hill. However, Laoro died at an early age due to unknown illness. After the incident, Nene who was very frustrated sought God’s help, instantly a divine force helped her to overcome her sufferings in life.
Months later, she related the God Holy Spirit gave a “mission” to her and she became Princess Analiza.
Her mission: to pray while walking, inside the church, sea, cemetery and forest. She was also told to live in a small nipa hut and give birth to a baby girl.
She gave birth to the girl by herself without any aid or help of a midwife. The baby turned out to be Prinsesita Mier Ve Batong Orange Nonon Luningning or Batong Orange.
Different belief
It is not easy to enter her kingdom although they welcome other people visiting them. They said though the
Princess only entertains people with pure hearts. At least 17 families are members of the group, which includes people from all walks of life.
The group considers the hill as sacred that is why they are choosy on the kind of people they receive in their domain.
The Ilijan people speak their own language and only them could understand it. Our interpreter-member Mawin told us that the spirit taught them the language they are using.
The Princess would give out blessings good enough for two years and hand out spiritual names to her followers. A pattern though could be observed in the names of the members where the word WIN will be added to your name while the word MAR will be added if you are a female. So, if your name for example is Leo, you would be called Leowin subject to the approval of the Princess since she is the only one authorized by their group to give out spiritual names.
The group maintains they are no cult, contrary to the perception of other people unfamiliar to their ways. The Princess said that they are not doing magic rituals, spells or use symbols that are identified with the underworld or to Satanic cults. To prove that their group adhered to the Being up above, the group adopted the catholic Church’s teachings as they are also have statues of saints and use of Catholic songs and prayer books where hey also attended mass in their chapel. The Sunday mass is officiated by an elder since the Princess does not mingle with the group during this time as she is contended by giving out instructions.
The "Holy Family" |
But what strange is the singing of the last part of the national anthem, they sing “ang MABUHAY nang dahil sa iyo,” instead of the original “ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo.” They believe that their vision tends to bring in ponderous logic and believed to have mysterious healing powers. However, the Princess said, “it means to show unity.”
Princess Analiza believes every human being is completely responsible for his own actions. To her evil is a choice that is made by man and should expect punishment as a result, while blessings will come and go when you are good.
She also holds the ancient belief on reincarnation—the after-life.
Healing powers
Princess Analiza is said to have ability to bring fortune to those who believe in her, foretell calamities and heal the sick.
There were stories from the members that the Princess healed them. The late barangay captain of Ilijan Norte Rogelio Lamalinao testified that the people in the hill once cured a man who had a severe gangrenous wound. Since the man has no resources to pay for an operation, he opted to seek healing from Princess Analiza’s group. During the healing, Princess Analiza raised both her hands as if asking for a divine intercession, when witnesses attested they saw as if an expert’s hand massaging the patient.
In other instance, the village head said while he was still a policeman, he had to climb the steep hill to see for himself and examine a dead baby who was not buried because their leader told them that the dead baby will not undergo decomposition. True enough, he found the boy’s body placed inside an urn in squatting position with clear eyes opened, without any sign of decomposition, even after over a year.
There was no way they could embalm him or introduce preservatives to the body, considering the place is bereft of science and technology.
No regrets
The Princess expresses no regrets of living a life on top of the hill. Despite the supernatural power she possesses which keep people to wonder with awe and respect, she still has the heart of a mother and she is a Princess in her own rights. (March 27, 2005)
Trivia:
The Solid Rock, the Ilijan Hill in old times was known as wizard's place. It is the Kingdom of King Antipone and Queen Fairystil. Long time ago, people borrowed things and wedding gowns from this place.
In Year 1952, people from neighboring towns were panic for they saw a wondrous Virgin at Ilijan Hill and when they came nearer nothing could be seen. They could only feel and smell the fragrance. The people from Dauis, Bohol also arrived in Ilijan Hill following a wondrous Virgin on top of the rainbow going to Ilijan Hill.
Update: Princess Analiza and Batong Orange are still at Ilijan Hill. The members are growing in numbers and in faith.
