Scene: BOHOL-BUHOL 2 is in Cebu on Jan. 31 at Qube Gallery at The Persimmon Plus. Bohol turns Ubi country
Bohol was undoubtedly the Ubi Country when it celebrated its 13th Ubi Festival recently as some of the ubi growers and supporters gathered to honor the tasty, purple-hued crop as a major agricultural product.

Attending the Ubi fest for the nth time was loving and learning more of Bohol, such as, 1) the scientific name of ubi/ube or purple yam is dioscorea alata, 2) ubi is also known as ubi jam, food for the gods, purple yam and sweet lavender, 3) Bohol is the largest ubi producer in the country, and 4) ubi is the only staple food included in the Bohol hymn.

At the Plaza Rizal, people could buy ubi varieties like kabus-ok, kinlot, balagon-on, binanag, tam-isan, apale, iniling, lima-lima, kot, bot and kinampay, the most aromatic ubi in the world, at reasonable prices.
     
Adding savor during the opening program was the search for the pinaka (the best quality ubi harvest and endemic root crops such as the 31 kilos ubi balagon-on and ubis which looked like a sea lion, human-tooth, carabao's foot, elephant and hand-glove of Pacman), most promising ubi product (ube jam, ube polvoron, ube calamay, ube torta, ubi ice candy and pinwheel), most promising ubi cuisine (ubi ginataan and ubi lumpia) and ubi eating contest at the Plaza Rizal and the literary musical contest (balak, kuradang, rap and jingle and ubi poster making) at the Island City Mall. (Again, I didn’t like how the ubi eating contest was done. There was no-thrill when the committee members decided to hold the contest by batches. Another one, the event at the Plaza Rizal had no sound system when they could have played Onie Oclarit’s Ubi Festival to add fanfare and enliven the mood of the people.) 

Anyway, I had the chance to ask environmental activist Zenaida Darunday who shared to me the health benefits of including ubi in our meal. 
            
“Ubi is an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), a very good source of vitamin C and manganese, and a good source of copper, dietary fiber, vitamin B6, potassium and iron. When you take ubi, you won't be constipated,” said Darunday. “Of course, it's a good alternative for rice especially now that we are trying to cut on rice consumption, ubi is a substitute. You can eat ubi without eating rice. Compared to potato it has more nutritional element.”

Ubi is also good for people who have hormonal imbalance and women who suffer menstrual cramps.

“It has dioscorin and it is good for women with dysmenorrhea," said Darunday.

For almost half a millennium, the ubi tuber has been venerated by the Boholanos. Yes, ubi is sacred in Bohol. To this day, the respect for the plant is still stronger than ever.

And why we kiss the ubi when it falls on the ground?

“It's our culture because according to some legend there was a famine in Bohol. Boholanos were able to stay alive because they found ubi when they were scratching the ground because ubi survives during drought and famine. And  when they saw ubi, ‘praise the Lord’ because it saved them from starvation.  If ubi tuber falls, you have to kiss it," added Darunday.

Recent studies revealed that ubi has also potent antioxidant effects. It is also an anti-diabetic and anti-Inflammatory food.

So, the next time you have the urge for something sweet, how about eating ubi products such as ubi jam? It's one food guaranteed to satisfy your whole body, not just your sweet tooth.

On the other hand, I was sad. The Ubi Festival committee decided to cancel the search for Ubi Queen this year in this supposed beauty contest-crazy province. The Ubi Festival organizers changed it to Miss 4-H but was cancelled on Jan. 23 at the Island City Mall.

Why? Like you, I was clueless.

Miss Ubi Festival Queen 2012 Jade Nica Obedencio will carry the crown for another year(s) until the Ubi Festival Committee members will decide when they can hold a pageant. Other winners were Pinky Gica Beldia–Socias who was the first Miss Ubi Festival Queen in 2000 and Rhiz Nova Tagsip Arenas (who became Miss Bohol Sandugo 2004) who was Miss Ubi Festival Queen 2004.

Anne Hathaway made me cry a river on Les Miserables especially during the I Dreamed A Dream scene. She sings with so much heart and soul, and so real that you can’t help but moved to tears.

Les Miserables (aka Les Mis or Les Miz) is based on Victor Hugo’s 1832 novel . Set during 19th Century France, Anne Hathaway plays Fantine (the same role by Lea in London’s West End) who’s driven by poverty to prostitution.
               
The mood is somber in Les Mis. There is a tone of melancholy predominates, even when events are relatively happy. I warn you: The song springs the old water works into the eyes.

You see, last year, there was a stage play of Les Mis in Tagbilaran City produced by DreamBig Productions, a cultural and theatrical production composed of young Tagbilaranons whose passion is into performing and theater arts.

Hu! Hu! Hu! I cried when Fantine (played by Gayle Marie Sinadjan) sang I Dreamed A Dream with so much emotion and passion that I heard the voices of Elaine Page, Ruthie Henshall, Petula Clark, Leah Salonga and Susan Boyle.

BigDream's mission is to raise back the theater industry in the province of Bohol and mount quality, realistic, timely relevant creative productions yet educating in the field of theater arts that caters both theater enthusiast and students.

On Feb. 9, DreamBig Productions will bring to Bohol another event as it will relive the romance, danger, beauty and passion of Romeo and Juliet, history’s greatest ever love story.

"This Valentine season, we will bring you an early Valentine show for the first time in history in the entertainment scene of Tagbilaran, a full length world class classical ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet live in Bohol,” said Jurie Balbuena, DreamBig PR head. “We will bring 40 professional, lovely and graceful dancers from Atlanta Festival Ballet Georgia U.S.A and Ballet Center Cebu choreographed by artistic director Gregory Aaron and international prime ballet dancer Nicolas Pacaña as Romeo himself and Katherine Trofeo of Ballet Philippines.”

Jurie Balbuena, who is one of the scholars of Ballet Center Cebu, approached Pacaña and Aaron to hold their last farewell performance in Bohol. Aaron was impressed of DreamBig when he learned of the successful Les Mis in Bohol.

“We are very honor that Mr. Pacaña chooses Bohol as part of his farewell performance or last International curtains call in the world of ballet,” said Jurie.

In our English class, Romeo meets Juliet at a masked ball and they fall in love at first sight. But the young lovers fall victim to their feuding families.

With a price on Romeo’s head, and Juliet suddenly betrothed to another man, the young lovers share a night of forbidden passion before Romeo flees the city. Juliet’s desperate pleas to call off the wedding are denied, and a secret plan is hatched for them to be reunited, with devastating consequences.

My English literature teacher shared Prince's elegy for the lovers: For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

“The timeless Romeo and Juliet still packs a huge emotional wallop,” added Jurie.

Romeo and Juliet will be on Feb. 9 at  2 p.m. (matinee) and 6 p.m. (gala) at the Bohol Cultural Center.

FLASH REPORT: Did Sunshine Cruz and Cesar "Buboy" Montano really separate? Rumor has it that the couple ended their relationship because of a third-party, a starlet named Krista Miller. Sunshine announced in her Instagram that the reason for her separation with Buboy is another woman, and the third party is a starlet named Krista Miller (who plays Marita Zaragoza in the upcoming film “The Turning Cradle: The Untold Story of Alfredo Lim,” directed and starred in by Buboy). Sunshine announced this: “I’m so sorry dear friends and family. I have been really quiet but when kids are affected unfair na yun. It is actually them who told me about this. They are hurt! I’m moving on. With my children. God bless you both for doing this to us.” According to reports, Sunshine also revealed that the gifts she and her sister-in-law gave Buboy, were then gifted to the girl. Sunshine said an A&F shirt and an iPhone 5 she gave and her sister-in-law’s gift of Ferrero Rocher chocolates, were given to Krista instead. Sunshine also alleged that Krista has sent provocative and sexy pictures and messages to Buboy.

Seen: Spotted in Bohol the other day was Ms. Joy Suarez, president of Rotary Club of Tagbilaran and over-all manager of Astoria. I did an interview with Ms. Joy at the posh Astoria in Baclayon town. But that’s another interesting story. Watch for it.

Seen: Minerva, Swan Hellenic’s solitary cruise ship, had a stopover in Bohol last Friday. Minerva is a small luxury ship, carrying 320 like-minded guests. Most of the passengers were British with a few Americans and Australians joining. Swan Hellenic has been offering cruises to intriguing destinations for more than 50 years.

Scene: The Ubi Festival 2013 is on Jan. 23-25.  The opening of exhibits on ubi, endemic rootcrops and sustainable agriculture products will be held on Jan. 23 at the Plaza Rizal, which will be followed by the search for pinaka (the best quality ubi harvest and endemic rootcrops), most promising ubi product, most promising ubi cuisine and ubi eating contest at the Plaza Rizal. The literary musical contest (balak, kuradang, rap and jingle, ubi poster making contest and Miss 4-H aka Ubi Queen will be held on the same day at the Island City Mall Activity Center.

While waiting for the fastcraft bound for Cebu last Friday night, I chanced upon the unimpeachable Very Reliable Source (VRS) at the waiting area, traveling by his lonesome. This VRS is a known political analyst cum businessman.

I turned around and there he was, the VRS. I waved at him. VRS asked me to join him, asking if he could get something for me. I protested, “Seeing you is enough.”

You see, Wednesday last week, Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan withdrew his candidacy for congressman. I asked VRS if he knew the reasons but VRS simply smiled. What I knew is that Mayor Calipusan withdrew his candidacy for personal, health and family reasons (I saw his affidavit of withdrawal at the Provincial Comelec Office on Jan. 9).

In any case, many people are still asking if the so-called “under the table” is indeed a done deal.

On the two-hour travel, VRS was sharing everything he knew about politics and sundry.

“For a lazy thinker, the easiest theory when a candidate backs out from a political rivalry is that his opponent paid off to sail smoothly to victory,” started VRS. “But why should a candidate payoff his opponent? That is when his opponent is stronger than him and he is desperate to get to the seat.”

Or so we thought.

“Doy Leo, in the case of Calipusan’s backout, does incumbent Rep. Arthur Yap desperately need to buy the mayor’s candidacy out? Obviously, not!”

VRS shared that the supporters of Calipusan were all up with energy combing the barangays of 3rd district as early as June last year, until that deciding point in the latest round in December.
 
“An insider (codenamed GP) from the Calipusan camp admitted they even met objection when they put up the tarpaulins. That’s why most of them are nailed on trees,” said VRS.

“Doy Leo, after several months of trying to convince the households to support Calipusan’s congressional bid, they failed to get additional supporters. They targeted 10,000 leaders.  But by December, they failed to get even 10 percent,” revealed VRS. He continued, “The hope was dying by then, but there are some close allies of the mayor who tried to sugarcoat the situation in contrast to what Calipusan noticed himself. So, the mayor asked for a survey to also check how effective were his leaders, and at the same time, asked a another close ally to tell him the real score. The survey and the opinion of that second close ally he consulted gave him a sign of losing.”

“When each camp was busy on their own campaign, nobody wants to yield. Nobody wants to meddle as the wound that Calipusan’s radio blocktime created on Yap got more painful yet futile,” added VRS.

 Why should Yap rid of a foe who was self-destroying? According to a VRS from the Calipusan camp, Yap never tried to reach out and even became more aggressive in expanding his HEART program. “In equity of the incumbent, Yap need not pay Calipusan off, because with or without Calipusan on the road, the incumbent congressman has the heart of his constituents,” clarified VRS.

VRS also revealed that it was also geographically impossible for the payoff negotiation to take place.

“Yap was in Taiwan during the Christmas break, while Calipusan was contemplating back home,” announced VRS. “Before the Christmas break, Calipusan’s supporters never showed a sign of melting down. The next scene was Yap coming home after Christmas to give a eulogy for the late Rep. Erico Aumentado and prior to his return, Calipusan already made up his mind. The time and geographical factors showed a negotiation was impossible to take place, aside from the fact that Yap doesn’t need it.”

“Besides, Yap was never known of going the easy way in dealing with things. In fact, he had often been misunderstood for being idealistic,” said VRS.

“If Calipusan was a victim, maybe he was but not of his partymates. He was a victim of some political scalawags who seemed to have assured him that his withdrawal could be invalidated once they would create a scenario. This scalawag in Bohol politics thought Yap would let go of his supporters once the opponent backs out and that could be a good timing to work for the invalidation of Calipusan’s withdrawal. Uh-oh! This is the biggest bluff in Bohol politics,” VRS concluded.

According to Chinese astrologers, the year of the Water Snake 2013 (which will start on Feb. 10) is fairly exciting, promising and smooth. The cosmic element of the year is water which is characterized with mobility, dynamism and changeability. The year of the Snake will correspond to such colors as black, blue (light-blue), and green. So, on the first day of the year, I wore blue with shades of black in order to charm the snake.
                                    
But as tradition dictates, Bared is dishing out its predictions for 2013. As a reminder (I may sound a broken record), tagna-tagna ra ni He! He! He!

Again, I must take a bow, ehem, because last year’s Tagna-Tagna was 95% true! Believe it or not but through the years, Bared has had a better batting average (read: more credible) than any or all of the mananagna who're using mutya (crystal ball) or cards to predict the future He! He! He!  How I did it? Radio (radio de baktas included), newspapers and the social media (Facebook!) can help you predict what’s in store for our favorite who’s who in Bohol in the next 12 months.

Ready? Drum roll…please.

• Sorry, but no wedding bells for:  Anna Maris Igpit and Glenn Soco (the latter will become busy for the election in Cebu), Bien Unido Mayor Rey Niño Boniel and his sexy girlfriend (or church wedding?), Dominic “Dobap” Aparicio (what for?) and his girlfriend (is there any?) nor Atty. Brian Gaviola and his girlfriend (if she can pick one) will plan to settle down this year. But Doc Renz Acedo and his wifey are seriously planning to march down the aisle and Eden Descallar of Globe Telecom and her beau will (finally!) walk the aisle this year!  We can’t wait for another year.

• The Alfeo Jabinez -Amy Fiel Booc romance will even grow stronger. But marriage is farthest from their minds.

• The "war" between Mayor Dan Neri Lim and Gov. Edgar Chatto will continue to “sour” into highest level during election time. The feuds will continue as politicians will have mudslinging and character assassination.

• More controversies will rock this year’s Miss Tagbilaran and Miss Bohol Sandugo. What’s new?

• Newly-wed Loida Lagonoy and her beau will be a complete family. Weeks from now, Loida will start having morning sickness. The stork might visit Junibe Froilan and Doc April Lumuthang-Froilan. Heaven might smile at them.

• The stork might pay Mary Anne Aparece-Verga and her hubby Doc Jon Mark Verga, a long-delayed visit (the couple’s daughter Ashiira is already two years old). Same for Vida Tirol-De Juan and Butch De Juan (Bea is no longer an infant).

• It’s another brighter year for Mikey Gatal as he will continue to attend sosyalan events. And he will find a partner that’s his and his alone.

• It will be a good year for Karen Gallman and Fer Mary Baliquig if they will join (again) in the Bb. Pilipinas.

• With the bright trail paved by the likes of Ted Ramasola, some of our Boholano indie makers will win awards in filmfests.

• The “missing” Mary Ebone Cimafranca will resurface with a big “surprise.”

• This year is a busy, busy year for Bohol’s Queen of Tourism Dame Rose Soy. She will not relinquish her crown as Santacruzan Queen.

• Bohol will be the set location of a movie. No elaboration.

• Idy Cagas will seriously think of finding a seductive boyfriend. No elaboration.

• Something “big” is in store for Bohol’s fashion icon EJ Relampagos. No elaboration.

• Albur’s asin tibuok (rock salt) will be revived by few citizens. Not only the cows and goats will use it, it will be available soon. Incidentally, asin tibuok will be featured on Jan. 13, 2013 on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho on GMA 7.

• Rich Asuncion’s star will shine even brighter and bigger. It’s good karma for her because she doesn’t forget her humble beginnings. Ask the people of Causeway and you will know.

• Boholano boxing icon Nonito Donaire will become the fighter of the decade. Boholano athletes like Jedara Docena Bautista and Jesus Pacaldo will also shine.

• Blind hymnist Onecimo “Onie” Oclarit will release a great album. Same for Loboc Children’s Choir and Loboc Youth Ambassadors Band.

• Vanity Kintanar Salinana will spread good vibes here and abroad. Hurrah to the Queen!

• Young entrepreneur Dalareich Polot will become a household name. The “tableya princess” will have a new business venture.

• Bromantical buddies whose stars will continue to shine are Marc Joseph Batoy, Clement Paulinel Lofranco Ingking and Chris Zambernard Milan.

AND NOW, THE BLIND ITEMS ‘TAGNA-TAGNA’

• Only forty percent of the politicians running under a prominent party in this May’s elections will win. Voters are now (hopefully!) more intelligent and more discerning.

• Many politicians will feel the pain after they will discover that “traydoray ra ang show” from their political mates. Ouch!

• The winner for governor is….Drum roll please! The complete name has letters C, O and R. Look, I didn’t say if a “he” or a “she”.  Ooops! The crystal ball becomes blurred! He! He! He!

• Tagbilaran City has a new mayor. He will definitely be a Tagbilaranon. Clue? His complete name has letters A and N!  Ooops! The crystal ball becomes blurred! He! He! He!

• A vocalist of a (famous) band in Bohol will make an earth shaking revelation about his life.

• Prominent Boholanos will become victims of scams and identity theft on social networking and microblogging site Twitter.

• Two best friends (from prominent families) will wage an ugly word war against each other on — Facebook.

• A band will fade away to give way to a new band.

• Expect “bromance” relationships as the growing population of maya and paminta are most welcomed this year. On the other hand, a student-model will make a shocking revelation that he is “born this way.”

• A winner of a pageant will make shocking revelations. No elaboration.

• Toward the middle of the year, a daughter of a wealthy businessman and a son of a prominent businessman will tie the knot this year, the wedding of the year! Clue? DU and WY.

• A personality will send feelers for a return to a prominent politician who is running this year which this personality left a few years ago but the prominent politician will simply turn a deaf ear.

• After all the awayan, two politicians will kiss and make up. That’s what friends are for.

• A prominent separated couple will bury the hatchet and kiss and make up.

• The wholesome images of prominent personalities (in politics and business) will be tarnished by issues against them.

• Two shows each in two stations will fold up middle of the year – or even earlier.

• A young politician will get involved in a politically-motivated controversy.

• A newspaper might change hands (ownership, I mean) or two newspapers will merge.

• Some Boholanos in the field of beauty pageant, public service, music and fashion will bring pride to Bohol.

• A distinguished messenger of the Word, a lawyer, a cultural icon, a beauty pageant watcher and a mediaman will ride a pale horse! Their rainbows will no longer be seen...forever.

Bohol’s Biggest Stories of 2012

From Vanity Salinana’s winning to the death of Rep. Erico Aumentado, 2012 was dominated by the many happenings of famous people in Bohol.

Some stories were happy ones; others, not so much. As we observed, 2012 was chock full of drama, major comebacks, career high notes, and some sad stuff too.

But no matter what went down over the last 12 months, we watched and followed our favorite people thru radio, newspapers and the social media as the good, the bad and the OMG took over the headlines.

HEY SEXY LADY

2012 saw the birth of beauty queens in the province.

Idy Caseñas Cagas was crowned Miss Bohol Sandugo on July 20. Cagas is the fifth Jagnaanon to win the Miss Bohol Sandugo title making Jagna as the only town in Bohol that has the most number of Miss Bohol Sandugo winners. (Sorry, Tubigon!)

Bohol’s Queen of Tourism Rose Soy was the Queen of Santacruzan 2012, Candy Cumayas was the Reyna Elena 2012.

Jade Nica Obedencio was crowned Miss Ubi Festival Queen 2012; Mary Ebone Calimbayan Cimafranca was chosen Miss Teen Tagbilaran 2012 and Karen Morfreux  was crowned Miss Teen Earth 2012 and Miss Silka Bohol 2012.

Mariecris Evardo was crowned Anyag sa Tubigon 2012. She almost won the Miss Bohol Sandugo 2012 crown.  Her townmate, Thea Rose Rizaldo, won the Miss Teen Bohol2012 title.
                                                   
We also witnessed Miss Ubay 2007 Karen Gallman and Miss Tagbilaran 2010 and Miss Bohol Sandugo 2010 1st runner-up Fer Mary Baliquig in the Bb. Pilipinas 2012. Baliquig also tried her luck in 2012 Miss World-Philippines.

Another Boholana Zeneline Ancog Bulalaque joined the Miss Philippines Earth 2012 representing Batuan.

It was also a good year for Vanity Kintanar Salinana who won the Queen of Cebu Universe 2012, the pageant for Alternatives held on November 9. Before winning Queen of Cebu, Vanity won the Carnival Queen of Mandaue 2010 and Bb. Gay Pilipinas Region VII in 2011.  She made history for Bohol after becoming the very first Boholana transgender to be crowned Queen of Cebu.

FAMOUS CELEB VISITS OF 2012

Simon Clive Barbon Greatwich, the midfielder of the Philippine Football Team, visited Bohol. Simon’s mother, Carol, hails from Tagbuane, Alburquerquel.

Richard Gutierrez was spotted in Bohol on Valentine’s Day. Richard was not dating someone but he was with the kids of Guiwanon Elementary School in Baclayon (hometown of actor Cesar Montano) who were the recipients of the Bikes for the World. Richard also visited Pamilacan Island. He also attended the Valentine programs of Laya Elementary School and Baclayon Central Elementary School.

The Queen of Talk Show Kris Aquino visited Bohol for the second time to shoot an episode for Kris TV show on ABS-CBN.

Filipino YouTube sensation Mikey Bustos, the comedic talent behind a series of wacky Filipino "language tutorials" that have gone viral online attracting millions — and counting, was spotted in Bohol to make his funny video of “Bohol and the All-knowing Tarsiers.”

Actor Aga Muhlach was in Bohol to shoot an episode about Bohol for his travel-adventure show Pinoy Explorer on TV5. Days after, matinee idol/TV host Drew Arellano was spotted in Bohol for his weekend adventure on GMANewsTV’s Weekend Getaway. The Bohol visit was the nth time for Drew.

Politicians who visited Bohol in 2012 Pres. Noynoy Aquino, Vice President Jejomar Binay, Sen. Chiz Escudero, Manong Maceda, Rep. Milagros “Mitos” Magsaysay, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, San Juan Rep. Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup got an invitation to become the guest speaker of the University of Bohol.  “Sana mapreserve ang natural beauty ng Bohol. Once na nasira yun mahirap na ibalik. It’s more fun in Bohol,” Shamcey said.

Also spotted in Bohol were Ruffa Gutierrez, Tim Yap, Alice Dixson, Cristalle Belo-Henares, Ryan Bang and Cory Quirino.

MEMORABLE CONCERTS OF 2012

Vice Ganda tickled our funny bones in a Valentine concert on Feb. 11. A Night with Christian Bautista on April 28 also amazed the crowd.

The unique concert event of celebrated folk-rock artist Joey Ayala (with his band Ang Bagong Lumad) and Pinoy pop icon Lolita Carbon of the band ASIN was held in Danao EcoPark on July 8.

Music-lovers also watched balladeer Basil Valdez who sang those oldies but goodies from the 60s and 70s that we loved so much...beautiful memories are made of them.

"Les Miserables," the infamous novel authored by French writer Victor Hugo, was staged in Bohol in July 2012.

Gospel singer Don Moen also brought the kingdom of God to Bohol with songs of praise and worship on Nov. 10. The concert was part of his three-day tour “God Will Make A Way! Philippine Tour 2012.”  Don Moen interpreted closely the words of the Bible in God Will Make A Way, Thank You, Lord, God Is   Good All The Time and Give Thanks.

Marc Joseph Batoy made us swoon in 2012! Not only was he named Mr. Bohol Island State University (BISU) 2012, Mr. Teen Bohol 2012 1st runner up, Mr. Olive C 2012 and Mr. Regional SCUAA 2012! Outstanding student, bromantical buddy, sexy star: Marc’s the total package in 2012!

While Marc Batoy took the title for Mr. SCUAA this year, Adryan Mila, claimed 2012's Mr Teen Bohol despite unpopular promotions of the pageant.

Clement Paulinel Lofranco Ingking had a lot to thank God for in 2012. Even though he lost out to Marc as Mr Olive and Mr Teen and Mr. BISU2012, we still think Clement had a super-sexy year.

ALMOST… AND BIG BREAK OF 2012

Aspiring musical sensation Sherwin “Paeng” Cabilan Rosco of Tubigon made it to the X-Factor Philippines. Boholana diva Eva Gulle- De los Santos, 50, also joined the X-Factor Philippines. They failed to reach the finals.

Mitch Capili (Michelle Angelu Kapirig in real life) was among the Top 20 in GMA-7's Protégé: The Battle For the Big Artista Break. She didn’t continue her journey for the big artista break as she was eliminated in Protégé First Elimination Night.

Lukas Enrique Magallano, the son of Luther Magallano of Cortes and nephew of Dr. Luisito Magallano, was hailed as the winner of the Promil Pre-School I-Shine Talent Camp in the finals on July 28 on ABS-CBN. Lukas bested 11 other talented kids for the title of first "Grand I-Shiner." Aside from scoring a contract with ABS-CBN's talent management firm Star Magic, Magallano also won P500,000, and a one-year supply of Promil Pre-School.

STORIES THAT TOUCHED US IN 2012

We were touched of the baby girl thought to be just a few hours old when she was found early morning in Albur town abandoned in a bag.

And so, after all the twists and turns, the action, drama, romance, suspense, etc, Prony, the longest and biggest python in captivity, found a new home in Barangay Laya, Baclayon last March 7. Her “twin” sister, Paloma, is still performing her deadly acrobatic moves and kagwang style.

Thirty-five elementary students of Totolan Elem. School in Dauis were hospitalized for food poisoning after eating the fruit of 'tuba-tuba' on June 8. Also, two died and one hospitalized for eating popper fish or  butete in Mabini.

When nature strikes… Typhoon Gener claimed the lives of couple Jury and Mylene Betaganzo  of Buenavista on August 1.  The couple were on board passenger motorcycle somewhere in Getafe when hit by the falling coconut tree which also hurt its driver and the couple’s two-year-old son. They died on the spot.

Several rice fields had dried up after months of no rain in Bohol, considered the food basket of Central Visayas.  Water level in a major dam in Pilar town had reached critically low levels. Cloud seeding operations were done to save the farms.

At least 85 houses and 13 motorized outrigger boats called pumpboats were damaged when a tornado struck four coastal villages in the Jagna.

Typhoon Pablo ravaged 8 fishing vessels and left one dead. Hundreds were forcibly evacuated in several areas of Bohol.

SCANDALS OF 2012

2012 was Bohol’s gas price problem. It was reported that there was a significant discrepancy in oil prices in the province when compared with those of neighboring regions and other areas in Central Visayas.  Governor Edgar Chatto appealed for conscience and corporate social responsibility from the three major fuel companies, after a heated forum failed to settle the needed cheaper fuel prices in Bohol.

Panglao was shattered with a gruesome incident involving the rape-slay of a resort cashier on Jan. 10. Tagged as suspect in the grim rape-slay was Erwin Escomo. He confessed he was “out of his mind” when he raped and then killed Josephine Micla. Panglao Mayor Benedicto Alcala reacted furiously as he ordered Panglao policemen to take the island’s drug problem seriously.

Armed with guns, inmates Exequiel Aniscal, Brian Ceniza and Mario Llaya escaped from Bohol District Jail on May 17. Five days after the manhunt operation, Ceniza and LLaya were in an alleged encounter with police authorities in Ubay town.

Actor and businessman Mandy Ochoa lost his wallet and cellular phone while going through the Tagbilaran Airport’s X-ray machine. The airport terminal building had no CCTV cameras.

Two Boholanos who wanted to increase the size of their booties made it on TV when their buttocks got infected following injections of collagen. They sought the help of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7) to trap the fake doctor.  After that incident, health authorities had issued a warning against using the services of unlicensed cosmetic surgeons or practitioners, saying consequences could be fatal.

Louie Digal vs. Facebook Trolls. Loboc Vice Mayor Louie Digal fell victim to internet pranksters on Wednesday, Nov. 21, when his Facebook account was hacked. A message promoting “political and venomous announcements” popped up on the mayoralty candidate’s page, and Digal was unimpressed that his account had been illegally accessed.

The Ombudsman suspended Cortes Mayor Apolinaria “Jasmine” Balistoy for six months without pay as a result of an anti-graft case that reached all the way to the Sandiganbayan filed by Vice-Mayor Danilo Montero.

Anti-epal Congresswoman, stage actress and political/social activist Mae Paner aka Juana Change was reacting on the tarpaulins of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Bohol federation president Jethro Nathaniel Lim Imboy sprawling along the city’s main thoroughfares. The original tarps had the faces of Juana Change and other two speakers with Bamboo as the event entertainer for SK Convention on Sept. 15-16. Juana Change, who is known for her anti-epal campaign, ordered the organizers to remove the “epal” tarps. The organizers replaced the tarps and removed Juana Change as one of the speakers. The incensed Juana Change mentioned the incident on Morning at ANC and reported on GMA News.

GOOD NEWS OF 2012

Panglao Island has been named as one of the Best Secret Beaches on Earth by Travel+Leisure Magazine in its March 2012 issue. It also named Ananyana Beach Resort and Spa as one of the Best Affordable Beach Resorts occupying a prime spot on the beachfront serving Filipino-Mediterranean dishes like the penne with pork adobo.

The short film, Bells Ring Mr. King, directed by Ted Ramasola, was one of the nominees for best short film in the 35th Gawad Urian Awards organized by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP), an organization of respected film critics.

Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community elected Bohol's most popular make-up artist and hairstylist Tracy Remolador Torres as president of the Bohol United Artists Association.

Thousands of devotees converged to pay homage to the sacred image of St. Pedro Calungsod, the second Filipino saint in Bohol on November 25, as part of the “Duaw Nasud” for Visayas and Mindanao.

The miniature Christmas Village of Mila Lim fascinated visitors and friends during the holidays. The Loboc town plaza came alive with a dancing lights and vibrant Christmas parols. Christmas lights adorned the facade of the centuries-old Loboc Church. In Sierra-Bullones, the giant Santa Claus, which measures 25 feet high, colored the Yuletide Season! The Pasko sa Plaza which featured Boholano talents attracted visitors for years.

FAMOUS FAREWELLS of 2012

Some of our (favorite) Boholanos passed away in 2012-- but left their mark on the world. They are gone but not forgotten.

In 2012, the province lost an incredible beauty queen and leader. Miss  Bohol Sandugo 1955 and former Mayor of Maribojoc Paula Raagas -Valles  passed away on July 8, 2012, aged 90.

The sudden death of eventologist and Alona's darling Uly Dolojol on Sept. 23, shocked friends all over Bohol. The outpouring of grief was immediate, with one common refrain: Alona Beach had lost one of its greatest persons.

Mrs. Asuncion Mira, trustee and treasurer of the University of Bohol (UB) passed away on Feb. 9.

Former city mayor of Tagbilaran Jose Maria Rocha passed away on July 4. He was 91. Rocha served as city mayor twice, first in 1980 to 1986 then in 1992 to 1995. He was also a city councilor and likewise served as executive secretary to then President Carlos P. Garcia.

The province was taken aback when news of Boholano great leader Erico Aumentado’s death surfaced at just 72.  According to Boy Pernia, the family’s spokesperson, Aumentado died on Dec. 25.  He was surrounded by family when he passed away in Makati. Boholanos worldwide were united in mourning after the passing of Aumentado. In a statement, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. called Aumentado an “exemplary public servant.” “He [Aumentado] deserves full credit for transforming Bohol into one of the most progressive, peaceful and richest provinces today. He was truly an outstanding solon -- learned, dedicated, and principled,” Belmonte said.  Also, “Erico Aumentado” was trending on Yahoo Philippines.

End of an era: Erico passes away

Boholanos here and abroad were united in mourning after the passing of Bohol 2^nd district Rep. Erico Boyles Aumentado.

According to Boy Pernia, Aumentado passed away at the St. Luke’s Medical Center-Global City, 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25 after a bout with pneumonia.

He was 72.

                           

Aumentado chaired the House ethics committee and was the chairman in forming the guidelines to make public the Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth of House members.

In a statement, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. called Aumentado an “exemplary public servant.”

 “He [Aumentado] deserves full credit for transforming Bohol into one of the most progressive, peaceful and richest provinces today. He was truly an outstanding solon -- learned, dedicated, and principled,” Belmonte said.

 He also lauded the late congressman for his “integrity and honor” which “have never been in doubt.”

“He [Aumentado] died a poor man because he never made politics the source of his livelihood. He was a very dear friend for whom I had the highest respect both as a colleague in Congress and in the writing profession,” the House leader added.

Occidental Mindoro Representative Amelita Villarosa, a colleague of Aumentado in the House minority bloc, said the late congressman will be remembered for transforming Bohol into one of the country's most peaceful provinces.

"He had made a record of having won all his political battles since 1967," Villarosa said, as he recalled how Aumentado rose from extreme poverty to become a lawyer and a public servant.

Aumentado served his constituents "so humbly yet so honorably," said Cebu Rep. Eduardo Gullas. “Your monument need not be erected in marble for it is enshrined in the heart of each and every Boholano,” he said.

Meanwhile, Aumentado’s daughter, Charina, described the late lawmaker as “my hero, my inspiration, my father.”

 “We commemorate Jesus birth last night as it marked the day we came into redemption. Last night, our dearest papa Rico joins our creator. The saddest Christmas for us , his beloved family, as he left coincidentally as Jesus came. Papa Erico wants us to celebrate instead of mourning every time we remember the time he left for this world. Papa, go ahead in your journey.... Yet alone ....but the lives you've touched and the inspirational life you've lived will forever be remembered. We love you always, We will miss you very much...” she posted on Facebook.

Aumentado’s son, Erico Angelo, also shared his thoughts about his father.  “He was a self made man. He owes his success to God only who gave him his intellect. A gift God took last until his last breath. With no voice to speak, he managed to show how important his work is... A painful sight only his family witnessed. His dedication to serve the people was his life. Public service is not a position for him... It was his vocation and calling. His presence is strong even without words. His face radiates with inner goodness. His body became weak and frail... But his mind remains vibrant and brilliant. A great mind with a good heart. Forever he will be missed.., a void never will be replaced.. But heaven is your place now. Rest well papa.. Your legacy will remain unsurpassed! PAPA ERICO I LOVE YOU...”

The provincial government of Bohol has declared a period of mourning and hoisting of national and provincial flags at half mast in honor of Aumentado starting Wednesday until his burial day on Jan. 5, 2013.

Shortly after the news broke, people also expressed their condolences on the death of Aumentado on the social networking site. His work and legacy were remembered by many people.

Glenda Ceniza Maniwang- I have my own personal encounters with Cong. Erico, while we were working with people’s organizations. Most of these groups we have met referred to him as the “Father of Cooperatives” here in Bohol. He championed the needs of the masses. He provided them irrigation dams where it is needed and we owe to him the cemented roads all around Bohol, hence the slogan, “Basta Aumentado, ang calzada cementado.” This project has contributed mainly to the rise of tourism activities in Bohol. My father & mother, who are very good friends of Cong. Erico, told us stories of the many times that Cong. Erico upheld what was for the common good. His integrity, according to my father, is something that we should emulate. I would say, he was not just a politician, but a statesman to the highest degree.

The Philippines nearly had another Miss Universe.

Miss USA Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe 2012, beating out beauties from around the world to claim the coveted title.

Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon came second and Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero was third.

Culpo’s victory came as a big surprise as a majority of viewers, mostly Filipinos, were expecting Tugonon to win the crown.

Culpo brought the Miss Universe crown back to the United States for the first time in more than a decade, while Tugonon duplicated Miriam Quiambao's first runner-up finish in 1999. The Philippines has won the Miss U twice with Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.

Renowned photographer Nigel Barker asked Tugonon the following question: "As a global ambassador, do you think speaking English should be a prerequisite to being Miss Universe?"

She replied, "I don't think speaking English is about speaking a specific language. Being Miss Universe is about being able to influence and inspire people, regardless of language. It's about being able to influence and inspire other people. If you have a heart to serve and a strong mind to show people, then you can be Miss Universe."

Tugonon also displayed her piercing eyes and her signature "Cobra Walk," a type of strut similar to the "tsunami walk" popularized by 2011 Miss Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup.

Some Filipinos went to the Sin City to support Tugonon including US-based Boholano socialite Mikey Gatal who covered the event for his website. As a Pinoy veteran beauty pageant watcher, Mikey was also interviewed by GMA News and Telemundo. Another Boholano director RD Alba also covered the Miss U.

The following letter from Mikey Gatal says it all:

Hi Leo,

First of all, I would like to thank you for the trust and giving me a chance to share with you my experiences inside Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada USA where the Miss Universe beauty pageant took place.

I arrived in Vegas on Monday afternoon, two days before the actual finals night, upon arrival, I already met some of the important people behind this event, some were Miss Teen Bahamas Shanae Strachangets, the winner in 2008, and challenged her to give a sample of her catwalk skills because Miss Philippines has a "Cobra Walk" and she did in front of some passersby when we bumped each other while shopping at Aldo Store.

Miss Teen USA 2012 Logan West is a trooper, I asked her if she is a contestant at first because she wasn't wearing a sash in one of the sections of the lobby and she gladly told me, "I am Miss Teen USA"! Before our photo shoot, the mom reminder her. "wear your sash" :)

As the days go by, I finally met former beauty queens Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, the mother of Janine Tugonon and mother of Shamcey Supsup, I  am forever thankful to them for letting me get inside a pass as one of the relatives of Miss Philippines! because of that pass, you can have access to all candidates during their rehearsals and meals.

Literally, they were all over the place and I was overwhelmed of their beauties in person, Miss Philippines' so regal and look like they were living dolls especially Miss Georgia, Miss Australia, Miss Brazil, Miss Indonesia, Miss Vietnam, Miss Guyana, Miss India, Miss Venezuela and Miss USA and many more!

I talked to Janine's mom, Tess, a day before the pageant and she said that she won’t change her gown what she wore during the preliminaries and she would still used it during the finals. The powder blue evening gown created by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza was very elegant in person and seeing it live was more pleasant to see than on TV especially knows how to carry it. She was not overpowered by the gown but, she overpowered the gown that's why she looks so queenly and a real winner to many.

The atmosphere during the pageant night was awesome and at the same time, everyone's nervous every time a candidate was being called and so on until two were finally left and one of them will be chosen to be the new Miss Universe. Everyone stood up before a name was called and I really heard from most of the audience, shouting Miss Philippines name because she gave a convincing answer but Miss USA won and stunned everyone.

We continued to talked about it at the lobby for several hours and waited for the contestants to come out and still debated of what really happened out there, so many good feed backs for Miss Philippines, some other nationalities would congratulate us too and we cannot just stop talking about it. Very proud of Janine Mari Tugonon!

I met the ever beautiful up Sushmita Sen during the Miss Universe after party together with Ohio, Miss Utah, Miss Wyoming and jokingly said, we are here to support Miss USA who defeated us during our pageant Ha !Ha! Ha!

For Nemi Monton—A long-delayed award! Is he ripe for an award (Hall of Fame)? Our answer is yes, yes, yes! He opened doors wider for Boholano athletes. His tireless dedication is one of a kind! Paging people out there!

For Dame Rose Soy —- Good health, more years and eternal beauty to continue her works as Bohol's Queen of Tourism and Santacruzan Queen.    

For Rep. Art Yap — To go right on with what he has started. He has done many great things which have positive impact on the lives of ordinary people in his district. His legislative track is already blazing a trail.

For Mayor Dan Lim and Gov. Edgar Chatto—  A peace pipe to be smoked with Mayor Lim on one end and Gov. Ed on the other. Same for Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan and Vice Mayor Louie Digal. Peace, peace, peace! Love! Love! Love!

For Ardy Batoy — Do we need to say more? Bohol’s Queen of All Media deserves great things in life. Same for Gloria Leodivica Araneta. More years of hosting stints, PR works, seminars and travels.

For Raul Gatal—Bohol’s seasoned host should discover, train and nurture new emceeing talents and to be able to organize Boholano emcees so they can improve their craft, police their ranks and protect their interests.

For Nonito Donaire — Glory and gold! Same for Aj Banal, Jedara Docena, Caesar Amonsot, Boom-Boom Bautista and Jesus Pacaldo, 2007 gold medalist for Track and Field Event in Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.

For Bishop Leonardo Medroso and Boholano priests— Good health and more years to continue teaching and witnessing the Word of God. Same for Pastors Nelson Rio III, Bobby Rio, Vicente Agustin, George Lungay, Franco Trigo, Rey Rodriguez and Bro. Libby Aba. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

For Marc Joseph Batoy— A smiling doll that will teach him to smile. Like Clement Paulinel Lofranco Ingking and Ar-Ar dela Serna, this Mr. Bisu and Mr. SCUAA is good-looking but he’s hardly smiling. Remember, your smile can bring joy to the whole world. May you keep smiling always.

For EJ Relampagos— To remain level headed and focused as she maintains her status as Bohol’s numero uno.

For Atty. Brian Gaviola — A marriage contract! Same for Lemuel Belarmino and Dr. Renz Acedo.
